Two days in Okinawa: what should you see in Naha?

Choose Shurijo Castle Park for a walk through Ryukyu castle grounds, or the museum and Fukushuen for Okinawa's nature and history exhibits and a garden. The castle route needs time to reach the airport after the Day 2 visit. The museum route needs enough Day 1 viewing time after stopping at your hotel.

A · Start at the market, then visit Shurijo

Have a meal at the market and browse Kokusai Street on your first day, then explore Shurijo Castle Park the next day. This short trip combines food and shopping with Ryukyu history using the monorail and walking. Choose a return flight that leaves enough time to collect your bags at the hotel and complete airport check-in after visiting the castle.

Day 1 · Naha Airport → Kenchomae hotel → Kokusai Street and market → hotel

Spend your first afternoon and evening in central Naha, then visit Shurijo Castle Park the following day. You need an arrival flight that leaves time to get into town that afternoon. Check individual market restaurants' last-order times, and choose a return flight with room for the castle visit and airport transfer.

  1. Naha Airport Station → Hotel near Kenchomae

After immigration and baggage claim, follow the terminal's second-floor connecting walkway to Naha Airport Station. Take Yui Rail toward Tedako-Uranishi and get off at Kenchomae. The adult fare is ¥290, and the train ride takes about 13 minutes. Walk from the station to your hotel.

  2. Hotel near Kenchomae → Kokusai Street, market, and dinner

Walk toward Kenchomae Station, enter Kokusai Street from its southern end, and browse the shops on your way to First Makishi Public Market at 2-10-1 Matsuo, Naha. If you select ingredients on the first floor and ask to have them cooked, confirm both the ingredient price and cooking charge first. You can also order from a second-floor restaurant's menu. The listed last-order time for second-floor restaurants is 8:00 p.m.; individual businesses keep different hours.

  3. Kokusai Street and market → Hotel near Kenchomae

After dinner, walk back along Kokusai Street to your hotel. If the market is closed or your flight arrives too late for last orders, choose an open restaurant on Kokusai Street. Meals and purchases at the market and along the street are excluded from the subtotal below.

Day 2 · Hotel → Shurijo Castle Park → hotel for bags → airport

Visit Shurijo Castle Park before your flight if you have time to explore the Ryukyu castle grounds. Seeing the Seiden interior takes longer than a short walk through the park. Skip the castle if you cannot also leave time to return to the hotel and reach the airport before your airline's check-in deadline.

  1. Kenchomae hotel and station → Shuri Station south exit and Shureimon

Walk from your hotel to Kenchomae Station and take a train toward Tedako-Uranishi that continues to Shuri. The adult fare is ¥320, and the ride takes 14 minutes. Leave through Shuri Station's south exit, use the stairs or elevator, and follow the official walking route toward Shureimon. The general access guide estimates about 15 minutes along this route. For a Seiden reservation, the ticket guide separately allows about 20 minutes from Shuri Station to the park information center, Suimuikan · 首里杜館.

  2. Shureimon → Castle grounds and paid area at Hoshinmon

Explore Shureimon and the castle grounds, then enter the paid area. For a ticket purchased in advance for November 23 or later, show its QR code at the Hoshinmon · 奉神門 entrance. If your ticket includes a Seiden interior reservation, join the viewing line during your booked time slot. The operator recommends a reservation 40–50 minutes after you arrive at Shuri Station. Its guide allows about 90–120 minutes from Suimuikan through the interior visit and back, so leave more time than you would for a quick walk before a flight.

  3. Shurijo Castle Park and Shuri Station → Hotel for bags, then Naha Airport

Walk back to Shuri Station and take a Naha Airport-bound train to Kenchomae. Walk to your hotel, collect your bags, and return to Kenchomae Station. The train to Naha Airport costs ¥290 and takes 13 minutes; follow the second-floor connecting walkway into the terminal. The round-trip train fare between Kenchomae and Shuri is ¥640. Allow separate time for the walk back to the station, train waits, the hotel round trip, bag collection, and airport check-in.

Walk from Shuri Station's south exitYui Rail Kencho-mae Station fares and timesYui Rail Naha Airport Station fares and timesNaha Airport monorail access

Adult admission to Shurijo's paid area is ¥400 through November 21, 2026, and ¥1,000 from November 23. The entire park closes on November 22, so this castle route cannot operate that day. On November 23, plan an afternoon visit: the free area inside the walls opens at 11:15 a.m., and the paid area and Seiden interior open at noon. A ticket without a reservation does not include the Seiden interior. Check the official booking page for your date and time. Leave the castle out of Day 2 if you have a morning flight or cannot allow enough time for check-in afterward.

For one adult, the ¥580 airport–Kenchomae round trip, ¥640 Shuri round trip, and paid-area admission total ¥1,620 through November 21 or ¥2,220 from November 23. Flights, lodging, meals, and separately charged bag storage are excluded. Allow walking time in addition to the train rides.

Shorten outdoor visits if strong wind and rain make the castle grounds or garden difficult to explore. Before substituting the museum, check its opening calendar, last admission, and Yui Rail service. If a typhoon stops transportation, do not assume indoor attractions are operating normally. Skipping or changing a visit also changes admission and transportation costs.

Verified admission and transport subtotal: One adult: ¥1,620 with a Shurijo visit through November 21, 2026 / ¥2,220 from November 23

Included: Shurijo paid-area admission ¥400 or ¥1,000 + Naha Airport–Kenchomae round-trip Yui Rail fare ¥580 + Kenchomae–Shuri round-trip Yui Rail fare ¥640

Separate costs: Flights, lodging, meals, shopping, and separately charged bag storage

The entire park closes on November 22. On November 23, the free area opens at 11:15 a.m. and the paid area at noon. Entry to the Seiden interior requires a ticket with a reservation. Shortening or skipping the castle because of wind and rain changes the cost. On departure day, leave time to collect your bags at the hotel and complete airport check-in first.

B · A short museum and garden trip

Choose the museum and Fukushuen if you want to learn about Okinawa's nature and history through exhibits, then take a relaxed garden walk. This route uses the monorail and walking, without the long trip north. It requires enough time to visit the museum after stopping at your hotel on Day 1, and an open garden on Day 2.

Day 1 · Naha Airport → Kenchomae hotel → museum → hotel

Visit exhibits about Okinawa's nature and history on your arrival day. You stop at your Kenchomae hotel first, so allow time for immigration, train rides, and walking before the museum visit. If Fukushuen is open the following day, you can fit both the exhibits and garden into this short trip.

  1. Naha Airport Station → Bag storage at your Kenchomae hotel

After immigration and baggage claim, take the terminal's second-floor connecting walkway to Naha Airport Station. Take a train toward Tedako-Uranishi and get off at Kenchomae. The adult fare is ¥290, and the ride takes 13 minutes. Stop at your hotel, then return to the station to travel to the museum.

  2. Kenchomae Station → Omoromachi Station, museum main entrance, and permanent exhibition

Take a train toward Tedako-Uranishi that continues to Omoromachi. The fare is ¥250, and the ride takes 6 minutes. The museum at 3-1-1 Omoromachi, Naha, is about a 10-minute walk from the station, or about 15 minutes at a slower pace. Follow the official access guide to the main entrance; the side entrance and rear gate are currently closed. Adult admission to the museum's permanent exhibition is ¥530. Last admission is 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday, and 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Arriving before the cutoff still needs to leave enough time to see the exhibits.

  3. Museum and Omoromachi Station → Kenchomae Station, dinner, and hotel

Walk from the main entrance back to Omoromachi Station and take a Naha Airport-bound train to Kenchomae for ¥250; the ride takes 6 minutes. Have dinner at an open restaurant near the southern end of Kokusai Street, then walk back to your hotel. This day's verified train fares total ¥790: ¥290 from the airport to Kenchomae and ¥500 for the museum round trip.

Check the museum's opening calendar and last admission even when choosing indoor exhibits because of rain. Do not plan an indoor sightseeing trip when a typhoon has stopped transportation. If wind and rain make the next day's garden walk impractical, shorten the visit, collect your bags at the hotel, and head to the airport. Skipping the garden changes this two-attraction itinerary and its cost.

Day 2 · Hotel → Fukushuen → hotel for bags → airport

After seeing the museum exhibits the day before, finish with a walk through Fukushuen and a meal in town. If you have a morning flight, move the garden to the previous day or skip it and head to the airport.

  1. Hotel near Kenchomae → Fukushuen entrance

Walk from your hotel toward Kenchomae Station, then to Fukushuen. The garden is a 7-minute walk from the station. Use the facility's official access map for 2-29-19 Kume, Naha, to find the entrance. Daytime garden admission starts at 9:00 a.m. and costs ¥200 for an adult. Add the walk from your hotel to the station separately.

  2. Fukushuen and restaurants in town → Meal or closure-day adjustment

After your garden walk, return toward Kenchomae for a meal at an open restaurant. On Wednesdays or substitute closure days, you can browse Kokusai Street's shops and restaurants instead, but the itinerary and cost will differ from a trip that includes the garden.

  3. Hotel bag collection near Kenchomae → Kenchomae Station and Naha Airport

Walk back to your hotel, collect your bags, and return to Kenchomae Station. Take a Naha Airport-bound train for ¥290; the ride takes 13 minutes. Follow the terminal's second-floor connecting walkway from the airport station. Choose a return flight that leaves time for walking, bag collection, train waits, and airline check-in after the garden visit. Leave the garden out of departure day if your flight leaves in the morning.

Train fares across the two days total ¥1,080, and museum and daytime garden admission total ¥730, for a combined ¥1,810. These are the fares for stopping at your hotel first, rather than traveling directly from the airport to the museum. Meals, lodging, flights, and any separate hotel bag-storage charge are excluded. Skipping the garden on the last day subtracts its ¥200 admission, giving ¥1,610, but you will no longer be following the two-attraction B itinerary.

Verified admission and transport subtotal: One adult: ¥1,810

Included: Museum permanent exhibition ¥530 + daytime Fukushuen admission ¥200 + Naha Airport–Kenchomae round-trip Yui Rail fare ¥580 + Kenchomae–Omoromachi round-trip Yui Rail fare ¥500

Separate costs: Flights, lodging, meals, shopping, separately charged bag storage, and special exhibition admission

These fares cover stopping at your Kenchomae hotel to leave your bags before making a round trip to the museum. Check museum opening days, last admission, and garden closure days. Skipping the garden on departure day reduces the total to ¥1,610; nighttime garden admission adds ¥100. Apply the same deduction if wind and rain make you skip the garden.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit Shurijo on Day 2 before a morning flight?

For a morning return flight, skip Shurijo on Day 2 and head to the airport. A castle visit requires the walk from Shuri Station, sightseeing, and a return to your hotel for bags. In addition to the 13-minute Kenchomae–airport train, allow walks between the hotel, station, and terminal, train waits, and airline check-in. The park closes on November 22, 2026; on November 23, the paid area opens at noon. Leaving out the visit also changes the listed admission and transportation subtotal.

Can I choose the museum and garden route after a late arrival?

You need enough viewing time after stopping at your Kenchomae hotel and walking from Omoromachi Station to the museum's main entrance. Last admission is 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday, and 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The museum normally closes Mondays, but opens if Monday is a public holiday, substitute holiday, or Okinawa Memorial Day, then closes on the next weekday. A late arrival may make you skip the Day 1 museum, changing the two-attraction route and cost. Check your flight time and Wednesday or substitute closures for the next day's garden too.
