Three days in Okinawa: head north or explore Naha?

Visit Churaumi Aquarium on Day 2 for the large tank with whale sharks and manta rays, taking a northbound bus from Naha and back. If you prefer less long-distance bus travel and more Ryukyu history and gardens, give Naha's museum, Shurijo Castle Park, and Fukushuen a day each.

A · Visit Churaumi Aquarium on Day 2

Set aside your second day for Churaumi Aquarium if you want to see whale sharks and manta rays in its large tank. Take a direct bus north from Naha and back, then finish your trip with a meal in town before heading to the airport.

Day 1 · Airport → Kenchomae hotel → Kokusai Street → hotel

Browse Kokusai Street's shops and restaurants on your first day, then head north to see the whale sharks and manta rays at Churaumi Aquarium on Day 2. On your way back from your evening walk, locate the northbound bus stop in front of Palette Kumoji.

  1. Naha Airport Station → Hotel near Kenchomae

After immigration and baggage claim, follow the terminal's second-floor connecting walkway to Naha Airport Station. Take Yui Rail toward Tedako-Uranishi and get off at Kenchomae. The fare is ¥290, and the ride takes 13 minutes. Walk to your hotel; this walk is additional to the train ride.

  3. Kokusai Street and Kencho Kitaguchi bus stop → Hotel near Kenchomae

Before returning to your hotel, use the operator's Kencho Kitaguchi stop guide to locate tomorrow's boarding point. The northbound stop is in front of Palette Kumoji · パレットくもじ, a 3-minute walk from Kenchomae Station. Add the walk between your hotel and the station separately. The Naha-bound stop where you get off on the return trip is almost directly across the street.

Day 2 · Hotel → Kencho Kitaguchi → Kinen Koen Mae → aquarium → Naha hotel

Spend today watching whale sharks and manta rays in Churaumi Aquarium's large tank. Travel from Naha by bus and back. Walking to the bus stop, waiting, and moving around the park are additional to the bus ride.

  1. Kencho Kitaguchi in front of Palette Kumoji → Kinen Koen Mae and aquarium entrance

Board a northbound YKB bus at Kencho Kitaguchi in front of Palette Kumoji, and get off at Kinen Koen Mae by the Central Gate. One example in the official timetable leaves Kencho Kitaguchi at 8:40 a.m. and reaches Kinen Koen Mae at 10:45 a.m.—a bus ride of 2 hours 5 minutes. Pairing this service with the 4:15 p.m. return below gives you 5 hours 30 minutes at the park. Check the timetable before leaving to confirm these services run on your visit date. The official access guide allows about 10 minutes to walk from the stop to the aquarium entrance. Enter through the Central Gate, turn around the right side of Haisai Plaza, and follow signs north toward the aquarium.

  3. Central Gate and return bus stop → Kencho Kitaguchi and Naha hotel

From the Central Gate, cross the pedestrian overpass to the Naha-bound YKB stop beneath the overpass connecting to the charter-bus parking lot. One official return timetable example leaves Kinen Koen Mae at 4:15 p.m. and reaches Kencho Kitaguchi at 6:32 p.m.—a bus ride of 2 hours 17 minutes. Recheck the stop and service for your visit date and allow boarding wait time. Road congestion can delay your arrival in Naha. Get off almost directly across from the stop in front of Palette Kumoji, walk to your hotel, and have dinner in Naha. The adult fare is ¥1,900 each way, or ¥3,800 round trip.

If you leave out today's northern visit, spend time on Kokusai Street and at the market in Naha. To substitute the museum, check its opening calendar, last admission, and additional admission fee. Yanbaru Express Bus does not take seat reservations. Use the steps above to check the next service and return alternatives if a bus is full.

Day 3 · Hotel → Kokusai Street and First Makishi Public Market → hotel → airport

After your aquarium trip north, use your last day to shop for souvenirs on Kokusai Street or have a meal at First Makishi Public Market. If your flight leaves in the morning, move this city walk to Day 1 and head to the airport. This route walks back to the hotel before taking the airport-bound train from Kenchomae.

  1. Hotel near Kenchomae → Kokusai Street and First Makishi Public Market

Walk from your hotel to the southern end of Kokusai Street and browse the shops on your way to the market. Compare ingredients and souvenirs, or choose a meal at a second-floor restaurant. If the market is closed, use open shops and restaurants along the street.

  2. Market and Kokusai Street → Hotel after your meal and shopping

Collect your bags and take a Naha Airport-bound train from Kenchomae. The fare is ¥290, and the ride takes 13 minutes. If you have a morning flight, move this walk to Day 1 and head to the airport. From Naha Airport Station, follow the terminal's second-floor connecting walkway. B · History and exhibits in Naha

Explore Okinawa's nature and history at the museum, then give Shurijo Castle Park and Fukushuen a day each. This route suits a slower trip through Naha's history and gardens rather than a long bus ride north. Travel by Yui Rail and on foot.

Day 1 · Airport → museum → Kenchomae hotel

After arrival, explore Okinawa's nature and history in the museum's permanent exhibition. You travel directly from the airport, so both your arrival time and the museum's bag-storage arrangements need to work. Stopping at your Kenchomae hotel first changes the route and cost.

  1. Naha Airport Station → Omoromachi Station, museum main entrance, and bag storage

After immigration and baggage claim, use the terminal's second-floor connecting walkway to Naha Airport Station. Take a train toward Tedako-Uranishi to Omoromachi. The fare is ¥320, and the ride takes 19 minutes. Walk 10–15 minutes to the museum and use the main entrance, which is the entrance currently available. Large lockers on the first floor beside the main entrance require a ¥100 coin, returned after use. If your bags do not fit or the lockers are full, ask the general information desk about other storage options.

  2. Museum main entrance → Permanent exhibition

Pay ¥530 for the museum's permanent exhibition to see displays about nature and history. Check that the opening calendar and your arrival time allow a visit. If a late flight leaves too little time, compare itinerary A, which begins with a city walk.

  3. Museum lockers and Omoromachi Station → Kenchomae Station and Naha hotel

Collect your bags from the locker and walk from the main entrance back to Omoromachi Station. Have a meal nearby, then take a Naha Airport-bound train to Kenchomae for ¥250; the ride takes 6 minutes. Walk from the station to your hotel.

Day 2 · Hotel → Shurijo Castle Park → central Naha → hotel

Walk through Shureimon and the castle grounds to explore Ryukyu history. To see the Seiden interior, match your visit to its opening conditions and a reservation time. If closures make you move the visit to another day, adjust the other attractions and transportation too.

  1. Kenchomae hotel and station → Shuri Station south exit and Shureimon

Take a train from Kenchomae toward Tedako-Uranishi to Shuri. The fare is ¥320, and the ride takes 14 minutes. Leave through Shuri Station's south exit and follow the official walking route to Shureimon, generally listed as about 15 minutes. If you have a Seiden interior reservation, leave 40–50 minutes between arriving at Shuri Station and your booked slot.

  2. Shureimon → Castle grounds and paid area at Hoshinmon

Explore the castle grounds and paid area. Adult admission is ¥400 through November 21 and ¥1,000 from November 23. 3. Shurijo Castle Park and Shuri Station → Kenchomae Station, central Naha, and hotel

Shorten outdoor visits if strong wind and rain make the castle grounds or garden difficult to explore. Before substituting the museum, check its opening calendar, last admission, and Yui Rail service. If a typhoon stops transportation, do not assume indoor attractions are operating normally. Skipping or changing a visit also changes admission and transportation costs.

Day 3 · Hotel → Fukushuen → meal in town → hotel → airport

After exploring Okinawa's nature and history at the museum and Shurijo Castle Park, finish with a walk through Fukushuen and a meal in town. For an early flight, visit the garden on an earlier city sightseeing day or skip it. The Kenchomae–airport train takes about 13 minutes, but the hotel round trip and check-in need additional time.

  1. Hotel near Kenchomae → Fukushuen entrance

Leave your hotel and, from 9:00 a.m., visit the entrance at 2-29-19 Kume shown on the garden's official access map. It is a 7-minute walk from Kenchomae Station; add the hotel-to-station walk separately. Adult daytime admission is ¥200. After your garden visit, return toward Kenchomae for a meal.

  2. Fukushuen and restaurants in town → Meal or closure-day adjustment

If the garden is closed on departure day, you can move the garden walk to after your return to central Naha on Day 2. Admission from 6:00 p.m. is ¥300. Walk along Kokusai Street on your last day instead.

  3. Hotel bag collection near Kenchomae → Kenchomae Station and Naha Airport

Collect your bags at the hotel and take a Naha Airport-bound train from Kenchomae for ¥290; the ride takes 13 minutes. Follow the terminal's second-floor connecting walkway and complete check-in. Bag collection, walking to the station, and train waits are excluded from those 13 minutes. For a morning flight, move the last day's sightseeing to an earlier day in town.

Day 1 train fares total ¥570 (¥320 + ¥250) when going directly to the museum. If you leave your bags at the hotel first and make a museum round trip, Day 1 train fares total ¥790—an additional ¥220. The basic subtotal for the direct route is ¥2,630 through November 21 or ¥3,230 from November 23. With the hotel stop first, the totals are ¥2,850 and ¥3,450; confirm the hotel can store your bags. If the museum is closed or you lack viewing time, you cannot follow B with the same set of attractions. Reschedule the castle if Day 2 falls on November 22. Museum bag-storage information checked October 8, 2026.

This total assumes you go directly from the airport to the museum. Stopping at the hotel first raises the totals to ¥2,850 and ¥3,450. Check bag-storage availability and the museum's last admission. Shurijo closes on November 22; on November 23, the paid area opens at noon. The Seiden interior requires a ticket with a reservation. Nighttime garden admission adds ¥100. Skipping or changing outdoor visits because of wind and rain also changes admission and transportation costs.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit Churaumi Aquarium in three days without a rental car?

Yes, but this route uses all of Day 2 for the northern trip. Board a northbound YKB bus at Kencho Kitaguchi in front of Palette Kumoji, get off at Kinen Koen Mae, and walk about 10 minutes to the aquarium entrance. For the return, cross the pedestrian overpass from the Central Gate to the Naha-bound YKB stop beneath the connecting overpass.

Choose both directions from the official timetable for your visit date. Yanbaru Express Bus does not take seat reservations, and seats on the next bus are not guaranteed. If you miss the last bus, check for a Naha-bound taxi at the stand in front of the Central Gate, including its fare and tolls. Taxi fares are excluded from the itinerary subtotal.

Does a Yui Rail day pass cover the northern aquarium trip?

No. The ¥1,000 adult 24-hour pass covers all Yui Rail stations. You still need the bus fare to Kinen Koen Mae and aquarium admission separately. Pass coverage checked October 8, 2026.
