Five days in Okinawa: how should you divide the north and Naha?

For marine life in a large tank and flowers in greenhouses, give the aquarium and Tropical Dream Center a day together, then explore Naha's museum, Shurijo Castle Park, and garden on other days. If caves and crafts appeal more, choose southern Okinawa World and see the museum and art museum together on another day. Arrange a separate round-trip vehicle for the southern visit.

A · Two northern attractions in one day, with more time in Naha

Visit the aquarium and Tropical Dream Center on the same day if you want to see both the marine life in the large tank and the greenhouses' flowers and fruit trees. Stay at the same Naha hotel and make just one northern bus round trip. Visit the museum, Shurijo Castle Park, and garden on other days. If you want plenty of time for shows or the beach, separate days for the two northern attractions may suit you better. Schedule the northern trip for a day the botanical garden is open.

Day 1 · Airport → Kenchomae hotel → Kokusai Street → hotel

Have dinner on Kokusai Street on your first day, then visit the northern aquarium and Tropical Dream Center together on Day 2. After returning to Naha, give the museum and Shurijo Castle Park a day each. Your northbound bus leaves from Kencho Kitaguchi in front of Palette Kumoji.

  1. Naha Airport Station → Hotel near Kenchomae

After immigration and baggage claim, use the terminal's second-floor connecting walkway to Naha Airport Station. Take a train toward Tedako-Uranishi to Kenchomae for ¥290; the ride takes 13 minutes. Walk from the station to your hotel. The walk is additional to the train ride.

  2. Hotel near Kenchomae → Kokusai Street, market, and dinner

Browse shops from the southern end of Kokusai Street and choose a restaurant for dinner. You can also walk to the market if its opening calendar and restaurant last-order times work for your arrival.

  3. Kokusai Street and Kencho Kitaguchi bus stop → Hotel near Kenchomae

Before walking back to your hotel, locate the northbound Kencho Kitaguchi stop in front of Palette Kumoji. The Naha-bound stop for getting off is almost directly across the street. Check Day 2 for the timetable and next-service alternative if a bus is full. You make one northern visit on Day 2, leaving large bags at the same hotel in Naha.

Day 2 · Hotel → aquarium → Tropical Dream Center → Naha hotel

See the marine life in the large tank in the morning, then walk through greenhouses with orchids and tropical fruit trees in the afternoon. Both attractions are in Ocean Expo Park, so they can fit into one day. If bus delays or entrance lines take too much time, skip the botanical garden and keep your return-bus plan.

  1. Kencho Kitaguchi in front of Palette Kumoji → Kinen Koen Mae and aquarium entrance

Board a northbound YKB bus at Kencho Kitaguchi in front of Palette Kumoji, and get off at Kinen Koen Mae by the Central Gate. One example in the official timetable leaves Kencho Kitaguchi at 8:40 a.m. and reaches Kinen Koen Mae at 10:45 a.m.—a bus ride of 2 hours 5 minutes. Pairing this service with the 4:15 p.m. return below gives you 5 hours 30 minutes at the park. Check the timetable before leaving to confirm these services run on your visit date. The official access guide allows about 10 minutes to walk from the stop to the aquarium entrance. Enter through the Central Gate, turn around the right side of Haisai Plaza, and follow signs north toward the aquarium.

  2. Aquarium entrance → Main aquarium visit

Explore the large tank with whale sharks and manta rays. Adult admission is ¥2,180. The official average visit estimate is 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours, excluding nearby facilities such as the dolphin show, sea turtles, and manatees. If you want to spend longer at shows or on the beach, leave the botanical garden out.

  3. Aquarium exit and park restaurants → Lunch, then Tropical Dream Center entrance

After the aquarium, allow time for lunch and the walk. The official guide estimates about 15 minutes on foot from the aquarium exit to Tropical Dream Center. Meals are additional. If restaurant waits are long, shorten or skip the botanical garden.

  4. Tropical Dream Center entrance → Greenhouses, then Central Gate

Pay ¥760 adult admission and walk through greenhouses with orchids and tropical fruit trees. The park's official sample itinerary allows 60 minutes for the botanical garden. An ordinary aquarium ticket does not qualify for half-price admission. The official map lists the walk between the garden and Haisai Plaza near the Central Gate as 7 minutes and 580 meters. Head back to the Central Gate in time for your return bus, leaving time for restrooms, the pedestrian overpass, and boarding waits. The mapped walking time excludes sightseeing, breaks, and waiting at the stop.

  5. Central Gate and return bus stop → Kencho Kitaguchi and Naha hotel

From the Central Gate, cross the pedestrian overpass to the Naha-bound YKB stop beneath the overpass connecting to the charter-bus parking lot. One official return timetable example leaves Kinen Koen Mae at 4:15 p.m. and reaches Kencho Kitaguchi at 6:32 p.m.—a bus ride of 2 hours 17 minutes. Recheck the stop and service for your visit date and allow boarding wait time. Road congestion can delay your arrival in Naha. Get off almost directly across from the stop in front of Palette Kumoji, walk to your hotel, and have dinner in Naha. The adult fare is ¥1,900 each way, or ¥3,800 round trip.

Tropical Dream Center closes on Wednesdays from July 1, 2026, through March 31, 2027. If Wednesday is a public holiday, it closes on the next weekday instead. Swap the northern day with the museum or Shurijo day if necessary, checking museum closures and Shurijo reservations too. The basic itinerary is an editorial suggestion allowing 2 hours for the aquarium, 1 hour for lunch and walking, 1 hour for the botanical garden, and about 1 hour to prepare for the return trip. A delayed or full bus requires a shorter visit or a different date. The times above are examples from the timetable effective November 1, 2025, currently supplied by the operator. The 5 hours 30 minutes at the park includes walking to entrances and bus waits. If you arrive late, shorten or skip the botanical garden rather than trying to see both attractions in full.

Day 3 · Hotel → museum → central Naha → hotel

After seeing marine life and plants in the north, explore Okinawa's nature and history at Naha's museum. If Day 3 falls on Monday or another closure day, swap it with Day 4's Shurijo visit while also checking castle opening conditions and your Seiden reservation time.

  1. Kenchomae hotel and station → Omoromachi Station and museum main entrance

Take a train from Kenchomae toward Tedako-Uranishi to Omoromachi for ¥250; the ride takes 6 minutes. Allow another 10–15 minutes to walk to the museum's main entrance at 3-1-1 Omoromachi, Naha. Check the side-entrance and rear-gate closure notice, and enter through the main entrance.

On Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday, the museum closes at 6:00 p.m. with last admission at 5:30 p.m. On Friday and Saturday, it closes at 8:00 p.m. with last admission at 7:30 p.m. It normally closes on Mondays, but opens if Monday is a public holiday, substitute holiday, or Okinawa Memorial Day, then closes on the next weekday. Also check the year-end closure from December 29 through January 3.

  3. Museum and Omoromachi Station → Kenchomae Station, dinner in town, and hotel

Walk from the main entrance back to Omoromachi Station and take a Naha Airport-bound train to Kenchomae for ¥250; the ride takes 6 minutes. Today's round-trip train fare is ¥500. Have dinner near Kokusai Street and return to the same hotel. Meals are excluded from the subtotal.

Do not automatically add another northern round trip just because you skipped the botanical garden yesterday. An alternative that gives the aquarium and garden separate days subtracts ¥1,030 for the museum and its train fares, then adds ¥3,800 for another northern bus round trip. With one ¥760 botanical-garden admission included, the subtotal becomes ¥12,360 or ¥12,960. If you want a longer visit at each attraction, compare the Motobu lodging conditions under “Should I make a day trip north or stay in Motobu?” below.

Day 4 · Hotel → Shurijo Castle Park → central Naha → hotel

Walk through Shureimon and the castle grounds to explore Ryukyu history. To see the Seiden interior, match your visit to its opening conditions and a reservation time. If closures make you move the visit to another day, adjust the other attractions and transportation too.

  1. Kenchomae hotel and station → Shuri Station south exit and Shureimon

Take a train from Kenchomae toward Tedako-Uranishi to Shuri for ¥320; the ride takes 14 minutes. Leave through Shuri Station's south exit and follow the official walking route to Shureimon, generally listed as about 15 minutes. Subtract ¥760 if you skip the botanical garden, or ¥1,030 if you skip both the museum and its round-trip train rides. Frequently asked questions

Can I visit the aquarium and Tropical Dream Center on the same day?

Both are in Ocean Expo Park and can fit into a single day if you allow enough time for sightseeing, meals, and walking between your outbound and return buses. The aquarium's official average visit of 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours excludes the outdoor dolphin, sea-turtle, and manatee facilities. The botanical garden is about a 15-minute walk from the aquarium exit. If delayed, skip the garden and prioritize your return bus. From July 1, 2026, through March 31, 2027, the garden closes on Wednesdays, or the next weekday if Wednesday is a public holiday.

Does a night in Motobu cost the same as the Naha round-trip route?

No. The ¥9,590 or ¥10,190 subtotal for five-day itinerary A covers admission and transportation across the full five days, staying in Naha with a northern day trip. It is not the cost of the northern day alone. A night in Motobu requires a new calculation with lodging, travel to the hotel, and the next day's return to Naha. Check Mahaina's shuttle times at the front desk; it has no airport shuttle.

Can I use the museum and art museum's 1DAY pass on any date?

No. The listed ¥750 1DAY pass applies to visiting the museum's permanent exhibition and art collection exhibition on the same day from September 25 through November 28, 2026. It does not include every special exhibition. The ¥5,070 or ¥5,670 southern and city itinerary subtotal also assumes this pass. Individual tickets checked October 9 totaled ¥930, or ¥180 more, but that comparison uses the exhibition period's rates. For November 29 onward, recheck exhibitions and admission before calculating. Add southern round-trip vehicle costs separately.
