Five days in Okinawa: how should you divide the north and Naha?

Give the aquarium and Tropical Dream Center a day for marine life and greenhouse flowers, then visit Naha’s museum, castle and garden on other days. If the cave and crafts appeal more, choose southern Okinawa World, with the museum and art museum together on another day. Arrange southern return vehicles separately.

A · Two northern attractions in one day, with time for Naha

See the aquarium and Tropical Dream Center together for large-tank marine life and greenhouse flowers/fruit trees. Keep the same Naha hotel and make one northern bus return. Visit the museum, castle and garden on other days. To spend longer at shows or beaches, separate the two northern facilities instead. Choose a day when the botanical garden opens.

Day 1 · Airport → Kencho-mae hotel → Kokusai Street → hotel

Eat on Kokusai Street on day one, then visit the northern aquarium and Tropical Dream Center together on day two. Back in Naha, give the museum and castle separate days. The northern bus boards in front of Palette Kumoji.

  1. Naha Airport Station → Kencho-mae hotel

After immigration and baggage collection, use the terminal’s second-floor passage to Naha Airport Station. Travel towards Tedako-Uranishi to Kencho-mae: JPY 290, 13 minutes. Walk to your hotel separately from train ride time.

Browse shops from southern Kokusai Street and choose dinner. Add the market walk if its opening and restaurant last orders fit.

  3. Kokusai Street and locating the Prefectural Office North Entrance stop → Kencho-mae hotel

Before walking back, locate the northbound stop in front of Palette Kumoji. The Naha drop-off is almost opposite. Day two covers timetables and next buses when full. Make just one northern visit on day two, leaving large luggage at the same Naha hotel.

Day 2 · Hotel → aquarium → Tropical Dream Center → Naha hotel

See large-tank marine life in the morning and orchid/tropical fruit-tree greenhouses in the afternoon. Both are within Ocean Expo Park and can be visited in a day. If buses or entry queues delay you, skip the botanical garden to catch the return service.

  1. Prefectural Office North Entrance in front of Palette Kumoji → Kinen Koen Mae and aquarium entrance

Board northbound YKB at the stop in front of Palette Kumoji and alight at Kinen Koen Mae (Central Gate). One official timetable example leaves at 08:40 and arrives at 10:45: two hours five minutes of bus travel. With this bus and the 16:15 return below, you have five hours 30 minutes in the park. Check these services operate on your date before departing. Official guidance gives about ten minutes on foot from the stop to the aquarium entrance. Enter the Central Gate, turn right at Haisai Plaza and follow signs north towards the aquarium.

  2. Aquarium entrance → Basic aquarium visit

See the whale shark and manta rays in the large tank for adult admission of JPY 2,180. The official average visit estimate is 90–120 minutes, excluding dolphin shows, turtles, manatees and other surrounding facilities. Do not try to include the botanical garden as well if spending longer at shows or the beach.

  3. Aquarium exit and park restaurants → Lunch → Tropical Dream Center entrance

Allow lunch and travel after the aquarium. Official guidance gives about 15 minutes on foot from its exit to Tropical Dream Center. Meals cost extra; long restaurant queues mean shortening or skipping the garden.

  4. Tropical Dream Center entrance → Greenhouses → Central Gate

Pay adult admission of JPY 760 and walk the orchid and tropical fruit-tree greenhouses. The park’s example assigns 60 minutes to the botanical garden. Ordinary aquarium tickets do not qualify for half-price admission. The official map gives seven minutes/580 metres from the garden to Haisai Plaza by the Central Gate. One official return example leaves Kinen Koen Mae at 16:15 and reaches the Prefectural Office North Entrance at 18:32: two hours 17 minutes of bus travel. Recheck your date’s service and stop, allowing boarding wait time. Traffic can delay arrival in Naha. Tropical Dream Center closes Wednesdays from 1 July 2026 to 31 March 2027, or the next weekday if Wednesday is a Japanese public holiday. Swap the northern day with museum/castle days for closures, checking museum closure and Seiden reservations. The suggested allocation is two hours aquarium, one hour lunch/walking, one hour garden and about one hour return preparation. Late/full buses require shorter visits or a different date. Times above are examples from the operator’s currently supplied timetable effective 1 November 2025. The five-hour-30-minute park stay includes entrance walking and bus waits. After a delay, shorten or omit the garden rather than trying to see both fully.

Day 3 · Hotel → museum → Naha city → hotel

After marine life and plants in the north, see Okinawa’s nature and history at Naha’s museum. For Monday or other closures, swap with day four’s castle, checking opening and Seiden reservation times.

  1. Kencho-mae hotel and station → Omoromachi Station and museum front entrance

Take a Tedako-Uranishi-bound train from Kencho-mae to Omoromachi: JPY 250, six minutes. Allow a separate 10–15-minute walk to the front entrance at 3-1-1 Omoromachi, Naha. Check auxiliary entrance/rear gate closure notices and use the front entrance.

The museum closes at 18:00 on Tuesday–Thursday and Sunday, with last admission at 17:30, and at 20:00 on Friday–Saturday, with last admission at 19:30. It closes on Mondays unless Monday is a public or substitute holiday or Memorial Day, when closure moves to the next weekday. Check the 29 December–3 January closure.

Do not automatically add another northern return because you skipped the garden yesterday. To spend longer at each, compare Motobu accommodation below under “A northern day trip or a night in Motobu?”.

Day 4 · Hotel → Shurijo Castle Park → Naha city → hotel

Walk Shureimon and the castle grounds for Ryukyu history. For the Seiden interior, match your date’s opening and reservation slot. When changing dates for closures, adjust the other facilities and transport.

  1. Kencho-mae hotel and station → Shuri Station south exit and Shureimon

Take a Tedako-Uranishi-bound train from Kencho-mae to Shuri: JPY 320, 14 minutes. Use the south exit and official Shureimon walking route, generally about 15 minutes. For Seiden reservations, allow 40–50 minutes from station arrival to your slot.

The tourism agency’s free 400-car parking information guarantees neither a space nor the walk from parking to entry. Vehicle contracts, fuel, tolls, meals and crafts cost extra.

A booked return vehicle with a driver can serve the southern day without a rental.

Do not follow this vehicle itinerary without either arrangement.

For buses, board route 54 Maekawa or 83 Gyokusendo at Naha Bus Terminal beside Asahibashi, alight at Gyokusendo-mae and walk about two minutes. Before departing, use operator timetables linked from official access guidance to check both journeys and section fares. Your date’s return bus times/fares are excluded from the vehicle subtotal.

If no return is arranged, switch to meals on Naha’s Kokusai Street and at the market; facilities and costs change.

Rain does not guarantee all shows run. Approaching typhoons or strong rain/wind may cancel performances. Check vehicles and facility operation; do not plan travel when a typhoon stops transport.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit aquarium and Tropical Dream Center on the same day?

Both are in Ocean Expo Park and can fit if viewing, meals and walks fit between return buses. The aquarium’s official 90–120-minute average excludes outdoor dolphins, turtles and manatees. Its exit-to-garden walk is about 15 minutes. After delays, omit the garden to catch the return. From 1 July 2026 to 31 March 2027, the garden closes Wednesdays or the next weekday for public-holiday Wednesdays.

Does a Motobu night cost the same as the Naha return route?

No. Four-night A’s JPY 9,590/10,190 is the five-day facility/transport subtotal while keeping a Naha hotel and making a northern day trip, not the northern day’s cost alone. A Motobu night requires recalculating accommodation, hotel travel and next-day Naha return. Confirm Mahaina shuttle times at reception; there is no airport shuttle.

Can I use the museum/art museum 1DAY pass on any date?

No. The listed JPY 750 pass covers permanent museum and art collection visits on the same day from 25 September to 28 November 2026, excluding some special exhibitions. Southern/city five-day subtotals JPY 5,070/5,670 assume that pass. Individual tickets checked 9 October total JPY 930, JPY 180 more, but the comparison applies to that exhibition period.
