Yamanashi travel: Kawaguchiko or Kofu as your base?
Stay near Kawaguchiko Station for Mount Fuji views and lakeside walks, or Kofu Station for art and castle ruins. Focus short trips on one base. With three or more nights, compare moving from Kofu to Kawaguchiko with staying around the lake.
Which Yamanashi sights would you like to see?
Choose the ropeway for elevated Fuji views, Oishi Park for lakeside walks or Appare for a boat trip. For indoor visits in rain, choose the gem museum's comparisons of rough and worked stones or the World Heritage Center's explanation of Fuji's World Heritage status. Gem displays are paid; the centre is free. For Millet and castle ruins, consider Kofu's prefectural art museum and Maizuru Castle Park. Seeing Kofu and the lake requires intercity travel, so choose accommodation bases.
Itineraries by trip length
Decide whether to change hotels before choosing trip length. One-night trips use one base; two-night trips stay around Kawaguchiko. From three nights, compare adding Kofu's art and ruins with staying around the lake.
2 days / 1 night
Stay one night in Kawaguchiko for Fuji views and gem displays, or Kofu for art and castle ruins. Shorten the itinerary by skipping the final visit if leaving on the second morning.
3 days / 2 nights
Stay two nights in Kawaguchiko for separate north-shore and gem visits. Option A has the viewpoint on the first afternoon; B visits the north shore on the first morning and spends day two on World Heritage displays and a boat trip.
4 days / 3 nights
One Kofu night then two Kawaguchiko nights, or three nights by the lake? Option A adds art and ruins; B keeps one hotel for viewpoint, north shore, displays and boat.
5 days / 4 nights
Both options stay one Kofu night then three Kawaguchiko nights. Add a day to the four-day Kofu-stay itinerary for either the viewpoint or World Heritage displays and Appare. Both visit the gem museum on the final day.
Where to stay
Lake Kawaguchiko · 河口湖
Stay near Kawaguchiko Station if using trains and sightseeing buses. Compare lakeside hotels if views are the priority, but check the route to the station and dinner options. Oishi Park is on the north shore and requires a bus journey from the station area.

Rail passes and regular tickets
Arriving by train from Tokyo
Take the JR Chuo Line from Shinjuku to Otsuki, then change to Fujikyu Railway for Kawaguchiko. The JR TOKYO Wide Pass covers eligible JR East routes and Fujikyu Railway, costs JPY 16,000 for an adult and lasts three consecutive days. Reserved seats on Fujisan Express and Fujisan View Express, and the Fuji Tozan Densha, require additional charges. It does not cover the Tokaido Shinkansen.
You can also buy regular tickets and required limited-express tickets separately. Compare the pass across Tokyo return journeys and other JR travel before choosing. A single three-consecutive-day pass cannot cover both the first and last days of a five-day trip. You need the original of a valid passport issued by a country other than Japan; a Temporary Visitor status is not required to buy the TOKYO Wide Pass. Check collection locations and reserved seats before departure.

Compare lakeside buses using separate tickets
Do not extend JR TOKYO Wide Pass rail coverage to Red Line or Blue Line buses or Appare tickets. Local bus and boat tickets are budgeted separately here. Itineraries visiting the north-shore park include a JPY 1,500 adult bus day pass. Regular fares may cost less depending on rides.
For just two Red Line rides on the gem museum day, regular tickets at JPY 180 each total JPY 360 return, JPY 1,140 less than that day's JPY 1,500 pass. Determine the cheapest combination across other days and two-day passes only after comparing your actual sequence and coverage. Accommodation, meals, luggage storage and return travel outside the prefecture are excluded from all eight partial totals.

A Kofu day trip instead of an overnight stay
For a day trip from Kawaguchiko to Kofu's castle ruins, check K1 timetables towards north Kofu Station and back to Kawaguchiko. Choose a morning outward bus and afternoon return, focusing on Maizuru Castle Park, officially about a three-minute walk from Kofu Station's south side. Allow time between north and south exits and to return to the north stand after lunch.
This day trip covers the castle ruins without the museum bus. Check opening days for Inari Turret and Kurogane Gate interiors. Check services and temporary changes with the operator, and budget this return day trip separately from the eight existing itineraries.

Mountain-top views or a lakeside walk?
Choose the ropeway for elevated views towards Mount Fuji or Oishi Park for lakeside walks. Board the ropeway on the lake's south-east side; take a bus to the north shore for Oishi Park. Clouds can hide the mountain and strong winds can stop the ropeway.

Which displays could you see on a rainy day?
In Kawaguchiko, compare rough and worked gemstones or explore Mount Fuji's nature and culture at the World Heritage Center. For Millet, visit the prefectural art museum in Kofu. Reaching it from Kawaguchiko needs travel between cities; it is not a nearby substitute when rain arrives. Plan around each facility's closures.

Boat trips or castle ruins
Appare leaves Funatsu pier and returns there about 20 minutes later. It differs from the boat dropping passengers at Oishi Park. For a short walk from Kofu Station, choose Maizuru Castle Park. If keep-platform stairs are difficult, walk only the lower ruins.

Areas to group into separate days
Kawaguchiko Station and Funatsu lakeside
On the ropeway day, have lunch near the station and walk about 15 minutes to the lakeside station. On the World Heritage Center and Appare day, return from morning displays to the station, then walk about 10 minutes to Funatsu pier. Ropeway queues may overlap boat departures; allow viewing and travel time for each if choosing both.

North shore and Oishi Park
Alight at the Red Line's Natural Living Center terminus and combine an Oishi Park walk with lunch on the north shore. This avoids returning to the station for a meal and travelling north again. Use the station-bound Red Line for the return. The gem museum is scheduled for the following morning before returning to the station.

South Kofu Station, art museum and castle ruins
Take the art museum bus from Kofu Station south stand 1; Maizuru Castle Park is about a three-minute walk from the south exit. Visit the museum, have lunch and return to the station on one day, then walk through the ruins on the next. For moving to Kawaguchiko, use north-side stand K1.

Which route takes you from the station to each sight?
Check entrances and alighting stops in the facility and operator maps below. Read outward and station-bound return buses together. If you need step-free access, ask the facility about entrances and walking routes ahead.
Kawaguchiko Station → ropeway
Walk about 15 minutes from Kawaguchiko Station to the lakeside station and take a return ropeway ride. Allow queue time separately.
Kawaguchiko Station → Oishi Park
From station stand 1, take the Red Line towards the Natural Living Center to the terminus. After walking the park, use the Kawaguchiko Station-bound service.
Kawaguchiko Station → Funatsu pier
Walk about 10 minutes from Kawaguchiko Station to Appare's ticket office and pier. Appare returns to its departure pier. Distinguish the ropeway entrance from the boarding point.
Kawaguchiko Station → World Heritage Center
From station stand 1, take the Blue Line towards Motosuko to centre stop 65. Walk about one minute to the centre. Number 65 is not a boarding-stand number.
Kawaguchiko Station → gem museum
From station stand 1, take the Red Line towards the Natural Living Center to stop 6. Follow signs to the exhibition entrance, allowing walking time after alighting.
Kofu Station → prefectural art museum
Take a museum-stopping bus from Kofu Station south stand 1. Return after viewing on a Kofu Station-bound bus.

Lunch around the lake
Hoto: wide noodles with vegetables
Hoto is a Yamanashi dish of wide noodles simmered with vegetables. Choose a north-shore restaurant on the Oishi Park day or dining in Funatsu or near the station on viewpoint or boat days. Menus and opening days vary; meals are excluded from itinerary totals.
Look towards Fujiyoshida for Yoshida udon
For Yoshida udon's firm noodles, check Fujiyoshida restaurants and transport separately. The journey differs from dining on Kawaguchiko's north shore. Transport for a Fujiyoshida udon visit is excluded from itinerary totals.
What is the adult price for each attraction?
These regular adult rates were checked against official material on 8–9 October 2026. Distinguish them from itinerary transport totals. Accommodation, meals and Tokyo return travel are separate; see the pass guidance above for rail and bus ticket comparisons.

View the lakeside before visiting Oishi Park
Lake Kawaguchiko and Fuji from the north shore
An updated photo from Oishi Park looks across the lake towards Mount Fuji. Cable TV Kawaguchiko lists updates about every five minutes. Open the original photo to see clouds over the lake and check its capture time to assess whether it is current. It does not establish flower conditions across the park, bus operations or ropeway suspensions.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to change hotels to see Kawaguchiko and Kofu?
For an unhurried art museum and castle visit, choose a four- or five-day itinerary with one Kofu night before moving to Kawaguchiko. Kofu Station is the base for art and ruins; Kawaguchiko Station for lake views, boats and gems. After Kofu sightseeing, take K1 from the station's north side to Kawaguchiko. To avoid moving hotels, make a day trip from Kawaguchiko to Kofu's castle ruins. Check morning outward and afternoon return K1 services together for your date.
