Should you stay in Kawaguchiko or Kofu for Yamanashi travel?
Stay near Kawaguchiko Station for Mount Fuji views and lakeside walks, or near Kofu Station for art and ruins. Focus short trips on one base. For four or more days, compare moving from Kofu to Kawaguchiko with staying around the lake.
Which Yamanashi attractions should you visit?
Choose the ropeway for views from above, Oishi Park for walks or Appare for a cruise. For indoor visits, compare the paid gem museum’s rough and cut stones and the free centre’s Fuji World Heritage exhibits. For Millet and ruins, visit Kofu’s art museum and castle park. Combining Kofu and lake sights needs intercity travel, so choose bases too.
Itineraries by trip length
Decide whether to change hotels first. A one-night trip uses one base; for two nights, stay around Kawaguchiko. With three or more nights, compare including Kofu’s art museum and ruins with staying around the lake.
1 night, 2 days
Stay one Kawaguchiko night for Fuji views and gems or one Kofu night for art and ruins. Omit final-day visits for a morning departure.
2 nights, 3 days
Stay two Kawaguchiko nights for the north shore and gems on separate days. Course A includes an afternoon deck visit on day one; course B starts on the north shore in the morning, then visits the centre and Appare on day two.
3 nights, 4 days
Choose one Kofu night followed by two lake nights, or three Kawaguchiko nights. Course A includes art, ruins and a hotel move; course B stays around the lake for the deck, north shore, exhibits and cruise.
4 nights, 5 days
Both courses start with one Kofu night then three Kawaguchiko nights. This adds a day to the four-day Kofu course for the deck or the centre and Appare. Both visit gems on the final day.
Where should you stay?
Lake Kawaguchiko · 河口湖
Stay near Kawaguchiko Station for trains and sightseeing buses. Compare lakeside hotels for views, checking station access and dinner options together. Oishi Park is on the north shore, requiring a bus from the station area.

Rail passes and ordinary tickets
Arriving by rail from Tokyo
Take the JR Chuo Line from Shinjuku to Otsuki and change to Fujikyu Railway for Kawaguchiko. The JR Tokyo Wide Pass covers designated JR East routes and Fujikyu Railway, costs JPY 16,000 adult and lasts three consecutive days. Reserved seats on Fujisan Limited Express/Fujisan View Express and services such as Fuji Tozan Densha need supplements. It excludes the Tokaido Shinkansen.
Alternatively, buy ordinary tickets and necessary limited-express tickets separately. Compare Tokyo travel dates and other JR journeys. One three-day pass cannot cover both day one and day five. An original valid passport issued outside Japan is required; Temporary Visitor status is not required for this pass. Check collection locations and reserved seats before departure.

Compare lake buses separately
Do not apply Tokyo Wide Pass railway coverage to Red/Blue Line buses or Appare. These itineraries calculate local buses and cruises separately. North-shore park courses include an adult JPY 1,500 bus day pass; ordinary fares may cost less for your actual rides.
Two Red Line rides on gem museum day cost JPY 180 each, return JPY 360, JPY 1,140 below that day’s JPY 1,500 pass. Find the cheapest combination across other dates or a two-day pass only after comparing your actual visit order and covered routes. Hotels, meals, luggage storage and return travel outside the prefecture are excluded from all eight partial totals.

A Kofu day trip instead of an overnight stay
For a castle-ruins day trip from Kawaguchiko, compare K1 buses towards north-side Kofu Station and back to Kawaguchiko. Choose morning outward and afternoon return services, visiting Maizuru Castle Park roughly three minutes on foot from Kofu’s south exit. Allow movement between north/south sides and return to the north-side stand after lunch.
This visits the ruins without the museum bus. Check building opening days for Inari Turret/Kurogane Gate interiors. Confirm travel-date operation/changes with the operator; calculate this return trip separately from the eight existing course totals.

View from above or walk beside the lake?
Choose the ropeway for views towards Mount Fuji from above, or Oishi Park for a lakeside walk. The ropeway boards on the southeast shore; the park needs a north-shore bus. Clouds may hide the mountain and wind can stop the ropeway.

Which exhibits suit a rainy day?
Compare rough and cut gems at Kawaguchiko’s gem museum or learn about Fuji’s nature and culture at the World Heritage Centre. For Millet, visit Kofu’s art museum. Kofu requires intercity travel, rather than being an immediate nearby rainy-day substitute. Choose dates according to facility closures.

For a boat trip or castle walk
Appare departs Funatsu Pier and returns to the same pier after about 20 minutes. It differs from boats stopping at Oishi Park. Choose Maizuru Castle Park for a short walk from Kofu Station, using lower ruins if keep-platform stairs are difficult.

Areas to group into separate days
Kawaguchiko Station and Funatsu lakeside
On ropeway day, have lunch near the station and walk about 15 minutes to the lakeside station. For the centre and Appare, visit exhibits in the morning, return to the station and walk about ten minutes to Funatsu Pier. Deck queues may overlap cruise departures; allow visiting and transfer time for each if combining them.

Which route from your station to the attraction?
Use facility/operator access maps below to check entrances and stops. Check both outward and station-bound buses. For step-free access, enquire about entrances and paths with the facility first.
Kawaguchiko Station → ropeway
Walk about 15 minutes to the lakeside station and take the ropeway up and back down. Allow queues separately.

Take the Natural Living Centre-bound Red Line from stand 1 to the terminus. Return on the station-bound service after walking.
Kawaguchiko Station → Funatsu Pier
Walk about ten minutes to Appare’s ticket desk and pier. Appare returns to that pier. Distinguish the ropeway entrance from boarding.
Kawaguchiko Station → World Heritage Centre
Take the Motosuko-bound Blue Line from stand 1 to stop 65 and walk about one minute. 65 is a stop number, not a boarding stand.
Kawaguchiko Station → gem museum
Take the Natural Living Centre-bound Red Line from stand 1 to stop 6. Follow signs to the exhibition entrance, allowing walking separately after alighting.
Kofu Station → prefectural art museum
Take a museum-stopping bus from south-side stand 1. Return by Kofu Station-bound bus after visiting.
Kofu Station → ruins and Kawaguchiko
Walk about three minutes from the south exit to castle park. On hotel-transfer day, visit first, then use north-side stand K1 for Kawaguchiko.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to change hotels to see both Kawaguchiko and Kofu?
Choose four- or five-day courses starting with one Kofu night for unhurried art and castle visits, then move to Kawaguchiko. Kofu Station serves the art museum and ruins; Kawaguchiko serves views, cruises and gems. After Kofu sightseeing, take K1 from the north side to Kawaguchiko. Without changing hotels, make a castle-only Kofu day trip, checking morning outward and afternoon return K1 services for your date.
