Fukuoka: where to stay and what to see
Stay near Hakata Station if you’ll be travelling to the airport or taking JR trains to other cities. Tenjin suits a trip centred on dinner and shopping. Once you’ve chosen your base, pick the sights and itinerary that fit your stay.
Start with the attractions
Compare admission and hours for the places that interest you: Hakata’s old town, Ohori Park and the science museum, Momochi Beach and Fukuoka Tower, Marine World or Dazaifu.
Choose an itinerary for your stay
Your day will look different depending on whether you want city food and walks, indoor attractions, the coast or a trip beyond the city. Open an itinerary for the day-by-day travel order. All assume a base near Hakata Station and use of Fukuoka Airport’s International Terminal.
2 days, 1 night
There is limited sightseeing time between arrival and the next day’s departure. Sightseeing on day 2 requires a flight leaving late in the afternoon.
3 days, 2 nights
Focus day 2 on city walks, the aquarium or the coast. These itineraries stay near the airport on departure day.
4 days, 3 nights
After city sightseeing, spend a day in Momochi, Marine World or Dazaifu.
5 days, 4 nights
Visit Ohori Park and the science museum on one day, then choose two of Marine World, Dazaifu and Momochi for the other two days.
Choose your base
Near Hakata Station: airport transfers and JR trips
Hakata is two subway stops from the airport station and a useful starting point for JR trips to Uminonakamichi. A hotel advertised as being near Hakata Station may still be some distance from the subway gates or JR platforms. Compare its address with the station exit you’ll use before booking.
Tenjin: dinners and shopping
Tenjin is a good base if restaurants and shops are your priority. Tenjin Station on the Airport Line and Tenjin-minami Station on the Nanakuma Line have different names and platforms. Find out which is closer to your hotel. Allow time to reach Hakata in the morning if you’ll be taking a JR train.
Ohori and Ropponmatsu: parks and museums
Consider this area if walks and exhibitions are your main interests. For airport transfers or JR departures from Hakata, allow for the walk from your hotel to the station and any transfers. Staying close to the park can mean a longer journey to the airport.
Areas to explore on separate days in Fukuoka
If you’re based in Hakata or Tenjin, consider these five city areas and Dazaifu beyond the city. Uminonakamichi and Dazaifu lie in different directions, so visiting them on separate days makes for a more relaxed trip.
Hakata Station and old town
A meal at Hakata Station followed by Kushida Shrine fits city sightseeing into a short stay. Take the Nanakuma Line from Hakata to Kushida Shrine Station and walk to the shrine. If you arrive late or have little time before your flight, keep to a meal near the station.
Tenjin and Nakasu-Kawabata
After shopping in Tenjin, use the official yatai map to find stalls open that evening. Nakasu and Tenjin are different areas. Check the nearest station and last service for your return to the hotel.
Ohori Park and Ropponmatsu
Ohori Park has a lakeside path of about 2 km. You can walk part of it and rest on a bench rather than completing the circuit. For indoor exhibitions, head to Fukuoka City Science Museum in Ropponmatsu, near exit 3 of Ropponmatsu Station on the Nanakuma Line.

Momochi and Fukuoka Tower
Set aside around half a day if you want to walk on Momochi Beach and see the coast from the tower. The tourism guide’s roughly 15-minute bus ride from Tenjin to Momochi excludes waiting and walking from the stop. Adult tower admission is JPY 1,000; follow the official last admission information for your visit date.
Uminonakamichi and Marine World
On your aquarium day, take the JR Kagoshima Main Line from Hakata to Kashii and change to the JR Kashii Line for Uminonakamichi. Marine World’s official map lists train rides of about 11 minutes and 20 minutes, then about 5 minutes on foot to the aquarium. Add time for the transfer and waiting at Kashii.
Beyond Fukuoka City: Dazaifu
Visit Dazaifu for tree-filled shrine grounds and shops along the approach. It is outside Fukuoka City; travel via Hakata → Tenjin → Nishitetsu train → Dazaifu Station. The four- and five-day itineraries set aside a separate day for the return journey and shrine visit. Search train times and fares for your date.

Getting around and finding places to eat
Find the airport-to-hotel route, city transport, Northern Kyushu Rail Pass and restaurants in Hakata and Tenjin in the order you need them.
Fukuoka Airport to Hakata and Tenjin
Choose a bus or subway route after international arrival according to whether your hotel is in Hakata or Tenjin.
See the airport section of the existing Fukuoka guide for the international shuttle and subway routes to Hakata and Tenjin.
Getting around by bus and train
Compare transport and transfer points for Hakata Station, Tenjin and other cities. Recheck fares and departures for your travel date.
With Fukuoka selected on the transport page, choose your departure station, destination and travel date. Check timetables and fares separately for subway and JR sections.
From Fukuoka to other Kyushu cities
If you’ll take several JR trips from Hakata to cities such as Kumamoto and Nagasaki, compare the Northern Kyushu Rail Pass’s coverage and price. It does not cover Fukuoka’s city subway or airport shuttle bus.
See harbour attractions in Nagasaki, walk around Lake Kinrin in Yufuin or explore hot spring scenery at Beppu’s hells. Choose your return train to Hakata first. If local transport and sightseeing would be rushed, compare an extra night. The attraction guides below provide access details and day-by-day itineraries for each city.
Check covered routes and exclusions before travelling onwards to Kokura or other northern Kyushu cities. Pass purchases are excluded from the itinerary costs below.
Consider this for harbour sights such as Dejima and Glover Garden. Plan your return JR train to Hakata alongside local travel in Nagasaki. If sightseeing would be rushed, compare an overnight stay. Local transport, admission and accommodation cost extra.
Leave time after arriving at Yufuin Station to walk through the hot spring town and around Lake Kinrin. For a day trip, choose your return train to Hakata first. Compare an overnight stay if you’d like to spend the evening and morning there. Accommodation, meals and bathing fees cost extra.
Explore the hot spring scenery of the hells. As well as the Hakata–Beppu trains, you’ll need a bus from Beppu Station. Visiting all seven involves travelling between two areas. If that won’t fit your return train, see fewer sites or stay overnight in Beppu. Admission, city buses and accommodation cost extra.
Eat in the neighbourhood you’re visiting
Decide whether to eat near Hakata Station or have dinner in Tenjin. Each area has its own food and restaurant guide.
For dinner in Hakata, explore the food guide around the station.
Explore dinner options for the evening you return to Tenjin from Dazaifu.
What food is Fukuoka known for?
For meals in Hakata or Tenjin, choose a dish first, then find a restaurant in the area you’ll be visiting that day. Menus and prices vary by restaurant.
Ramen and udon
Tonkotsu ramen pairs thin noodles with a rich pork-bone broth. If ramen doesn’t appeal, udon is another option. Look for restaurants in either Hakata or Tenjin, comparing menus and opening hours where you’ll be spending the day.
Motsunabe and mizutaki
Motsunabe is a hot pot with beef offal, cabbage and garlic chives. Mizutaki cooks chicken and vegetables in chicken broth. If offal is unfamiliar, start by considering mizutaki. Broths and minimum ordering requirements vary, so read the menu before booking.
Yatai food stalls
You can find yatai in Tenjin, Nakasu and other areas in the evening, but not every stall opens on the same days. The official guide says most open between 18:30 and 19:00, and some close in bad weather. Seating is tight, so leave large suitcases at the hotel. Many accept cash only; confirm menu prices and payment methods before ordering.

Planning tips for different lengths of stay
For two days and one night
Choose one itinerary: food in Hakata and Tenjin, Ohori Park and the science museum, or Momochi and the tower. For a morning flight home, skip day 2 sightseeing and focus on reaching the International Terminal from Hakata Station.
Plan four- and five-day trips day by day
There are three options each for four- and five-day stays. After city walks, spend separate days in your preferred places among Momochi, Marine World and Dazaifu. Rearrange days according to flight times and attraction closures.
Adjust for the season and your companions
In rain, replace outdoor walks with an indoor attraction that is open, checking closure dates first. With children, you can visit the aquarium and science museum on separate days. With parents, the walks and stairs between stations and attractions may deserve more attention. Seasonal events and cherry blossom dates need date-specific official information.
Check Fukuoka cameras before your trip
Cameras show only the part of the street in view. They do not establish attraction opening, train services or congestion across the city.
Outside Hakata Station
On your airport-to-Hakata hotel journey, view the street outside the station. The camera does not show your hotel location or platforms inside the station.
Check the camera location and update time to view the weather and street scene there. The image alone cannot tell you the weather elsewhere or whether attractions and transport are operating.
Tenjin and Watanabe-dori
If you’ll spend the evening in Tenjin, the Watanabe-dori view offers a look at the area. It does not show whether the underground shopping centre or yatai are open.
Check the camera location and update time to view the weather and street scene there. The image alone cannot tell you the weather elsewhere or whether attractions and transport are operating.
Frequently asked questions
Should I stay in Hakata or Tenjin?
Stay near Hakata Station for frequent airport transfers or JR trips beyond the city. Consider Tenjin for dinners and shopping. Hotels in the same neighbourhood can be near different station exits, so check the address before booking.
Can I take the subway from Fukuoka Airport’s International Terminal to Hakata?
Yes, but the subway does not depart directly from the International Terminal. Take the free shuttle from stop 5 outside Arrivals to the south side of the Domestic Terminal, then change to the Airport Line. Hakata is two subway stops away. Allow separately for immigration, baggage collection and shuttle waits.
