Ishikawa: where should I stay, and what should I see?
In Kanazawa, walk among Kenrokuen's ponds and trees and choose a seafood lunch at Omicho Market. Explore Higashi Chaya's traditional teahouse buildings and Nagamachi's earthen walls and stone lanes. For a hot spring inn stay, take a train to Kagaonsen Station, then a Yamanaka-bound bus or reserved accommodation shuttle.
Garden, historic districts or hot springs?
Walk among Kenrokuen's ponds and trees for garden scenery. Choose Omicho Market for a seafood lunch and browsing. Higashi Chaya's teahouse buildings and Nagamachi's earthen walls and stone lanes offer different historic streets. For hot spring rest and riverside walks, stay in Yamanaka and explore a short nearby Kakusenkei section.
Itineraries by trip length
First choose whether to remain in Kanazawa or move to Yamanaka Onsen after sightseeing. City itineraries divide the market, garden and historic districts; hot spring itineraries match trains with accommodation shuttles. Check your booked accommodation plan for included meals.
2 days, 1 night
With one Kanazawa night, see the market and garden or give Higashi Chaya and Nagamachi a day each. Reduce day-two sightseeing for an early onward train.
3 days, 2 nights
Spend two Kanazawa nights to divide the market, garden and historic districts. For hot spring rest too, split one night each in Kanazawa and Yamanaka. Choose a return-day Higashi Chaya visit according to your onward departure.
4 days, 3 nights
For the garden, Nagamachi and hot spring rest, split two Kanazawa nights and one inn night. For an extra day resting at the inn and walking nearby riverside paths, choose one Kanazawa night and two hot spring nights.
5 days, 4 nights
Two nights each in Kanazawa and the hot springs allow an inn rest day after city sightseeing. For a separate Higashi Chaya day, split three Kanazawa nights and one inn night. Match your last-day train back from the inn with your onward service.
Where should I stay?
Kanazawa Station area
Look near Kanazawa Station if trains to Kagaonsen Station and your onward departure are priorities. Allow separate time for buses and walks to the garden and historic districts.

Before travelling and booking
Check timetables and closures for your dates
Use IR local trains between Kanazawa and Kagaonsen Station. Choose return services in the official IR timetable and match arrivals and platform access with your reserved accommodation shuttle. Reserve Ohanami Kyubei's shuttle separately by the previous day. Official return-shuttle requests run from check-in to breakfast the following morning; for two nights, confirm the actual check-out day's service and request deadline at check-in. Kenrokuen hours change from 16 October.

Distinguish IR local trains from rail pass coverage
The hot spring itinerary's rail subtotal uses ordinary IR Kanazawa–Kagaonsen tickets at JPY 880 one way or JPY 1,760 return. The Hokuriku Area, Hokuriku Arch and Kansai–Hokuriku Area passes allow an exception on IR only for travel between Kanazawa and Tsubata without getting off at other IR stations. This exception does not apply to this itinerary's Kagaonsen stop. If changing to Shinkansen travel, reassess each pass's coverage, seat conditions, date-specific trains and shuttle connections. Check hot spring local buses and admission separately. Choose a pass after comparing your starting city and other journeys.

From Kanazawa Station to city sights and hot springs
City loop bus stops with the same name can have different locations by direction. Hot spring travel uses trains and onward transport, rather than a city bus connection.
Kenrokuen: east exit bay 7 → right loop RL6
Take the right loop from Kanazawa Station east exit bay 7 to Kenrokuen-shita/Kanazawa Castle RL6, opposite Ishikawa Gate. Walk about 5 minutes to Katsurazaka entrance. Continue on the right loop via Korinbo and Omicho Market for the station return. Add bus waits and garden walking separately.

Higashi Chaya and Nagamachi: arrival and return stops
For Higashi Chaya, get off the right loop at Hashibacho outside Kinjoro and walk about 5 minutes. Returning on the same right loop goes via the garden, Korinbo and market, taking longer than the outward ride. For Nagamachi, get off the left loop at Korinbo outside Atrio and walk about 5 minutes; return on the station-bound right loop from outside the former Bank of Japan.

Market seafood or Jibuni?
Fit your Omicho Market meal around lunchtime opening. On a Nagamachi walking day, choose a restaurant in Korinbo or Katamachi. If you booked an accommodation shuttle, fit city meals around that departure.
Meals at Omicho Market
Choose seafood dishes while browsing the market. Check the menu for fish varieties, cooked food versus raw fish, prices and hours. General market hours do not establish evening opening at individual restaurants.
Jibuni: a thickened meat and vegetable stew
Jibuni is an Ishikawa dish of duck or chicken and vegetables simmered in broth. Flour coating the meat thickens the broth, and wasabi may accompany it. Look for Jibuni on menus for local food beyond seafood. Check ingredients and serving styles with the restaurant.
