Miyazaki travel: where should you stay and which areas should you visit?

Stay near Miyazaki Station for train trips to Aoshima and the city shrine. For more time by the sea, consider Aoshima; to give Udo Jingu and Obi separate days, look at a Nichinan stay. Split a northern Takachiho Gorge stay from your city trip, choosing your boat date, parking and transport first.

Which interests you: coastal shrines, Obi's streets or the northern gorge?

Compare Aoshima for an island shrine and coastal walk with Udo Jingu for a cave sanctuary. Obi has old town streets and history facilities; the city museum has nature and history exhibits. For gorge walking and boats, set separate dates for a northern Takachiho stay.

Itineraries by number of nights

Compare JR/walking routes for Aoshima, the city shrine and museum with rental-car routes for Udo/Nichinan stays or Takachiho. The southern coast and northern gorge are different travel directions.

2 days, 1 night

Stay in Miyazaki city for JR trips to Aoshima and the city shrine, or one night in Nichinan to give Obi and Udo separate driving days.

3 days, 2 nights

Give the coast, shrine and museum separate visits from one city property, or stay two nights in Aoshima and visit Udo and Obi by car.

4 days, 3 nights

Stay three nights in the city for separate JR day trips to Aoshima and Obi, or two nights in Takachiho for different gorge walk and boat days.

5 days, 4 nights

Give the coast time with one Aoshima night, two Nichinan nights and one city night, or place two Takachiho nights between city stays. Fit return-day coastal sightseeing to sunset and your arrival time.

Where should you stay?

Miyazaki Station and city

Stay near Miyazaki Station to give Aoshima and the city shrine a day each by JR. Keep Nichinan's Udo and Obi separate from city sightseeing. If driving, compare accommodation parking locations and charges.

Takachiho

Compare a Takachiho stay to see rock walls and waterfalls from both a walking path and a boat. It is far from Miyazaki city; allow time for the return drive and breaks. Check boat reservations and operating conditions for your chosen date and accommodation parking charges separately.

Before travelling or booking

What costs should I add beyond the subtotal?

Free shrine visits and museum permanent exhibitions still require itinerary transport costs. For JR routes, add accommodation, meals and departure transport to the daily section fares. For driving routes, add fuel and actual parking charges to rental costs, as well as accommodation, meals and departure transport. Reference section fares differ from a search covering the entire actual consecutive trip.

Takachiho boats are priced per boat for 30 minutes, not per adult; add the visit-date calendar price and your actual parking fee separately. Compare coverage of the ¥2,500 adult ordinary-route bus day pass only for a separate bus itinerary. JR, highway buses and direct Miyazaki–Takachiho services are excluded.

How should I choose return JR trips to Aoshima and Obi?

Take the JR Nichinan Line from Miyazaki to Aoshima, then cross Yayoi Bridge to the shrine. Distinguish this from southbound Miyazaki Airport trains. In search results, check whether northbound trains from Aoshima/Obi run through to Miyazaki or require a Minami-Miyazaki transfer. Choose both journeys and fares for actual dates, allowing for the station walk and transfer waits.

What should I check for a coastal bus trip?

The ordinary-route day pass costs ¥2,500 for adults, ¥2,200 for students (identification conditions) and ¥1,250 for children. It excludes JR, inter-prefectural highway/express buses, direct Miyazaki–Takachiho services, community buses and other excluded routes. Distinguish regular Nobeoka–Takachiho inclusion from the direct city departure.

On the southern coast, compare ordinary routes linking Aoshima, Udo and Obi. Some Obi services bypass Udo; search visit-date stops, returns and event detours/suspensions with the operator together. A late Aoshima return does not imply a later Udo return.

For a same-day ordinary-bus return trip from Miyazaki Station to Obi, compare the ¥4,480 regular adult fare with the ¥2,500 day pass. The pass is cheaper for this return trip; other origins or one-way journeys require comparison with their own fares. Individual Aoshima–Udo and other section fares and the post-restriction Udo-stop-to-sanctuary detour remain unconfirmed. The timetable alone does not establish an itinerary allowing a Udo visit. Three-night, four-day route A makes separate JR return trips to Aoshima and Obi without Udo.

How should I divide indoor visits and street walking in Obi?

Adult individual admission is ¥300 for one facility; the combined ticket is ¥800. Compare one individual visit with several visits. The operating preservation association lists six facilities in the combined ticket and history museum hours of 09:30–16:30. If a late arrival leaves too little exhibit time, skip indoor admission and walk the castle streets. Obi Castle Tourist Car Park is free for ordinary passenger cars; medium buses and larger pay ¥1,000 per vehicle. Set the car park as your destination and separately check walks to each town facility.

How should I prepare Takachiho transport and boat reservations?

Distinguish regular buses via Nobeoka from direct services leaving Miyazaki. Arrange the final approach to the gorge separately too.

Check per-boat, 30-minute pricing in the date-specific official calendar. Online reservations run from 09:00 fourteen days before use to 09:00 two days before, with advance credit-card payment. Phone/email reservations and cancellation waiting lists are unavailable. Check reservation-only dates and inspection closures against your visit-date calendar. Usual listed operation is 08:30–17:00, with reception until 16:30, but sell-outs, water levels or inspections may end it early or suspend it.

Reception is inside car park 1, Oshioi. There is no dedicated or reserved parking, and boat reservations do not guarantee a space. Add parking waits, reception and boarding access to the approximately 15-/20-/25-minute walks from car parks 2/3/4. Check boat operation and path opening separately that day.

How should I divide visit areas and meal times?

First choose between meals in Miyazaki city with an Aoshima day trip and a stay in Nichinan for Udo and Obi. Northern Takachiho requires a long journey, so separate its overnight days from the southern coast.

Try chicken nanban in the city or local food such as obiten while walking Obi. Menus, hours and prices vary by shop. If staying at Aoshima or Udo through dinner, check whether a place to eat remains open after sightseeing.

Compare Southern and All Kyushu Rail Passes for designated JR sections. Udo buses, direct Takachiho buses, boats and rental cars are separate; the Northern Kyushu pass cannot cover Miyazaki JR travel.

Where can I use a JR pass I already have?

Designated JR coverage of the Southern and All Kyushu Rail Passes includes Miyazaki–Aoshima/Obi and Miyazaki–Miyazaki-Jingu. Arrange walks after the station, Udo buses, direct Takachiho buses, boats and rental cars separately. Do not assume the Northern Kyushu pass covers Miyazaki JR sections.

Southern Kyushu covers three consecutive days; All Kyushu offers three, five or seven. For the Obi day trip with three city nights, distinguish the full four-day trip from three-day pass validity. The northern driving stay is not an itinerary replaceable by a JR pass. Check official passport, residence and Temporary Visitor conditions. Decide on purchase by comparing ordinary ticket subtotals and other JR sections you will actually use.

How should I prepare car pickup and return?

First check the booked pickup branch's address and hours, required driving documents for every driver and payment methods. If choosing Toyota, show your reservation, confirm the contract and expected charges, inspect the car with staff and then depart. Allow separate time for pickup procedures and driving to the first destination. Follow the relevant operator's terms if booking elsewhere.

If arriving by air, allow separate time for entry procedures, luggage collection and travel to the branch. Check the quote using first-day pickup and last-day return times, vehicle, protection and options. Do not automatically price one night as twenty-four hours.

Areas to give separate days and how to reach them

Southern Aoshima/Nichinan and northern Takachiho are in different directions. Decide between returning to city accommodation by JR and driving between local stays, then choose daily visits.

From Miyazaki Station to Aoshima

Choose a Nichinan Line service stopping at Aoshima, walk from the station to the coast and cross Yayoi Bridge. Check whether the return runs through to Miyazaki or requires a Minami-Miyazaki transfer.

Obi and Udo in Nichinan

Obi combines castle streets with optional paid indoor visits. Udo still requires walking from tourist parking to the sanctuary and a check of access restrictions. Give each visit separate time even on a driving route.

Northern Takachiho

City chicken nanban and Obi food

Choose city meals by the menu you want, such as chicken nanban or Miyazaki beef. Obiten is a fried fish-paste dish from Nichinan's Obi area. For local food on your Obi walk day, compare your sightseeing finish time with actual shop hours. Check menus and prices with each shop.

How should I separate transport passes and trip costs?

Southern and All Kyushu pass JR coverage includes Miyazaki–Aoshima/Obi and Miyazaki–Miyazaki-Jingu. The Northern Kyushu pass cannot cover these Miyazaki sections. Udo buses, direct Takachiho buses, rental cars and boats are separate. Southern Kyushu is valid for three consecutive days; All Kyushu for three, five or seven. Compare the full trip with actual JR use days. You can also buy ordinary tickets only for needed sections. Frequently asked questions

Do I need a rental car for Miyazaki?

For Aoshima and Miyazaki Jingu, you can travel by JR and on foot without a rental car. By bus to Udo and Obi, first check visit-date frequency, returns and walking access under Udo restrictions. With a rental car, add fuel and parking to rental costs and allow travel time after return.
