Where should you spend time: castle, art museums or temple approach?

See Matsumoto Castle's wooden keep and moat, and Yayoi Kusama or Higashiyama Kaii works in the two cities' art museums. Give Zenkoji approach walks and Obuse's Hokusai-kan a day each. Compare stair access and closures in individual attraction guidance.

Itineraries by duration

One-/two-night routes stay in either Matsumoto or Nagano. From three nights/four days, move accommodation between the two cities. Choose according to desired art/architecture and last-day departure time.

2 days, 1 night

Choose one city: Matsumoto Castle/City Museum or Zenkoji/prefectural art museum. For a late first-day arrival or early second-day departure, omit one visit and allow travel time first.

3 days, 2 nights

Stay in Matsumoto for separate castle, art museum and City Museum days, or Nagano for an Obuse return trip between temple and art visits. Both use one accommodation base.

4 days, 3 nights

See Matsumoto's castle and art museum, then move to Nagano. Choose whether to use the remaining day for Zenkoji or Hokusai in Obuse. Plan intercity trains and luggage transport separately.

5 days, 4 nights

Split Matsumoto/Nagano stays with an Obuse trip, or replace Obuse with Former Kaichi School's old classrooms and architecture. Reduce last-day visits to fit the return train.

Where should you stay?

Matsumoto · 松本

Walk approximately 20 minutes from the station to the castle, or use the North Route bus. The castle interior has stairs; choose between exterior and moat walks and a keep visit.

For accommodation within walking distance of the station, compare Matsumoto Tourist Hotel · 松本ツーリストホテル as one example. The hotel is approximately six to seven minutes from Matsumoto Station and offers reception luggage storage before check-in and after check-out. If booking elsewhere, station-to-hotel walking and luggage conditions will differ.

Nagano City · 長野市

Use buses from Nagano Station to Zenkoji or Nagano Dentetsu trains to Obuse. Accommodation near the temple gate suits early visits, but requires travel back to the station for intercity train days.

Compare station-connected Hotel Metropolitan Nagano · ホテルメトロポリタン長野 if station access is a priority. Leave luggage at first-floor reception before check-in or after check-out. The hotel lists its second-floor station passage as available 05:30–00:30; check on-site entrances outside those hours.

Matsumoto Castle · 松本城

Separate wooden keep interiors from walks around Matsumoto Castle. The keep requires steep stairs up and down; if stairs are difficult, focus on exterior walks and the City Museum.

Zenkoji Temple · 善光寺 / The Hokusai-kan Museum · 北斎館

Zenkoji is in Nagano city; Hokusai-kan is in Obuse. Similarly named art museums in the two cities are separate facilities. Match desired exhibits with accommodation bases first.

Plan JR transfers and Obuse returns separately

Use JR between Matsumoto and Nagano and Nagano Dentetsu between Nagano and Obuse. Allow approximately 15 minutes from JR Nagano to the underground Dentetsu station, including ticket purchase. For Zenkoji/art museum Alpico buses, distinguish stops and weekday/weekend/public-holiday timetables. Choose the return bus from your final visit and onward train together. For a morning departure, first compare omitting last-day paid admission.

Have Shinshu soba for a meal and chestnut snacks in Obuse

Shinshu soba is Nagano's well-known buckwheat noodle dish. Eat between the station and castle on a Matsumoto Castle day, or along Zenkoji's approach on a temple day, to fit onward journeys more easily. Enjoy Obuse chestnut sweets after a meal and choose lunch separately. Check individual shop days, menus and reservation terms; add meals to itinerary admission/transport totals.

Use cameras for exterior views

The Matsumoto Castle camera looks from city hall towards the castle exterior and Northern Alps, not the keep interior or whole Kuromon queue. Zenkoji's Sanmon camera alternates main-hall and Nakamise directions without showing interior worship areas. Regardless of camera playback, check facility opening and admission with official guidance.
