Matsumoto Castle and City Museum

Base yourself in Matsumoto for the wooden castle on day 1 and city history exhibits the next day. Choose this to learn about both castle architecture and town life.

Day 1: explore Matsumoto Castle's keep and moat

See the wooden keep's structure, then walk outside the moat afterwards.

    Walk approximately 20 minutes from the eastern Oshiro Exit to the castle and enter through southern Kuromon Gate. The red bridge is not the visitor entrance.

  2. Kuromon Gate → Keep and Honmaru

    The keep has narrow, steep stairs. If stairs are difficult, choose exterior and moat walks instead. Usual hours are 08:30–17:00, last admission 16:30. Closed 29–31 December; 1–3 January hours are 10:00–15:30, last admission 15:00.

    Return towards the station for a meal. Allow separate time for keep admission and ticket queues. For a late arrival, check visit-date admission hours first.

Day 2: explore Matsumoto's history through exhibits

Learn about city history and everyday life after the previous day's castle visit.

  1. Matsumoto Station Oshiro Exit → Matsumoto City Museum

    Walk approximately 15 minutes from Matsumoto Station to the museum. Visit permanent city history exhibits instead of climbing the keep again.

    Exhibition rooms open 09:00–17:00; ticket sales end 16:30. Closed Tuesdays, or the next weekday if Tuesday is a public holiday, and 29 December–3 January. Check separate ticket coverage if adding a special exhibition.

  3. City Museum → Matsumoto Station

    Have lunch in the city after the visit and return to the station, approximately 15 minutes away. Choose a last-day departure you can catch after this walk.

Zenkoji and the prefectural art museum

Stay in Nagano and give Zenkoji and the prefectural art museum's two collections separate days. Combine temple approach walks with art exhibits.

Day 1: visit Zenkoji and take a break along the approach

Visit the main hall and eat nearby. Choose paid interior worship if you wish.

  1. Nagano Station Zenkoji Exit bus bay 1 → Zenkoji main hall

    Take an Alpico bus to Zenkoji Daimon and walk approximately five minutes to the main hall. Check weekday versus weekend/public-holiday schedules and your return to Nagano Station together in the official timetable.

  2. Main hall → Inner sanctuary and Okaidan passage, or grounds

    Outdoor worship and grounds are free. For an interior visit, choose the inner sanctuary and dark Okaidan passage. Inner sanctuary admission ends 16:30 in April–October, 16:15 in March/November and 16:00 in December–February. Opening depends on the morning service. Every 28 December, inner sanctuary admission ends with the morning service.

  3. Around the temple approach → Nagano Station

    Have lunch nearby after visiting, then return to the Nagano-bound stop at Daimon. Check outbound versus return boarding locations and take your chosen return bus.

Day 2: see the prefectural art museum's two collections

Give the main building and Higashiyama Kaii Gallery separate time, then return to Nagano Station.

    On weekdays, take a bus from Zenkoji Exit bay 1 to Zenkoji Daimon, then walk approximately ten minutes. Weekend/public-holiday park services use Shiroyama Koen-mae, approximately one minute away. Choose stops and fares for your date and check both journeys.

  2. Art museum entrance → Main building and Higashiyama Kaii Gallery

    See collections in the main building and Higashiyama Kaii Gallery. Special exhibitions are extra; your visit's scope changes if one gallery is changing exhibits. If using the weekend/public-holiday park route, check Nagano-bound services at Shiroyama Koen-mae, approximately one minute away.
