Day 1: airport, accommodation and Kannawa’s five hells
Leave luggage and choose the Kannawa hells you can visit before closing.

Get off the airport bus at Kitahama, leave luggage at your accommodation, then go to Beppu Station west bay 3. Take an APU-bound route 5 to Umi Jigoku-mae for Kannawa’s five nearby hells. Choose your return from the official weekday or weekend timetable first.

Finish all visits by 17:00 and walk to the bus stop. Allow walking between facilities and visit fewer if all five will not fit. Return to the station for dinner and rest. Combined ticket ¥2,400, route 5 return ¥780 and airport–Kitahama ¥1,600 total ¥4,780 for day 1’s included items.

After leaving luggage at your accommodation from Kitahama, go to the Kannawa-bound bay west of Beppu Station. Allow walking between facilities and back to the return stop. Reduce your visit scope to catch the bus after facility closing.
Day 2: Chinoike and Tatsumaki, then Beppu accommodation
Use yesterday’s combined ticket for Chinoike and Tatsumaki, which you have not visited yet, then return to the same Beppu accommodation.

Prepare today’s ¥1,100 Kamenoi Bus Mini day pass and take route 26 from Beppu Station east bay 5 to Chinoike Jigoku-mae. Return on the route 16 outer loop towards Beppu Station. Route 26 heads towards Kannawa, rather than the same return direction. Check official weekday/weekend schedules and allow walks to entrances and eruption waits.

- Chinoike and Tatsumaki → Route 16 to Beppu accommodation and rest
Use yesterday’s combined ticket once at each of the two facilities you have not visited. It does not allow repeat visits to the same facility; bathing is separate. Return to the station for lunch, then rest at your accommodation or use a booked bath. There is no airport trip today. Today’s ¥1,100 Mini day pass covers the return buses in the total. It is separate from the combined admission ticket; day 1 route 5 buses use ordinary fares.

Leave east bay 5 on route 26 and distinguish route 16’s return direction. This day’s ¥1,100 Mini day pass is included. Allow entrance walks and eruption waits separately. Visit only facilities not yet used on yesterday’s combined ticket, then return to your Beppu accommodation. There is no airport trip today.
Day 3: ropeway, Kitahama and airport
See mountain views by ropeway, return to Beppu, then take an airport bus from Kitahama.

Take a route 36 service that stops at Beppu Ropeway from Beppu Station west bay 1. Choose outward and return services together from the official weekday/weekend timetable. Some services do not stop at the ropeway, so check stop markings. Omit the visit if arriving late or services are suspended.

Buy an adult ¥1,800 return ticket at the lower station and ride up. After visiting, descend and take a route 36 from the ropeway stop to Beppu Station west side. Return buses cost another ¥1,000. Check the last downward ropeway and an actual stopping return bus together.

Collect luggage and go to Kitahama’s airport-bound boarding point. Choose walking or transport based on your accommodation’s address, allowing its time and cost separately. Distinguish the airport-bound boarding location from your inbound airport drop-off.

Choose an airport-bound bus in your date’s official timetable with a buffer before your airline’s check-in deadline. The adult fare is ¥1,600 one way. Add road-delay and airport-procedure time to the scheduled arrival. Reduce or omit final-day sightseeing if you cannot catch this bus afterwards.
Choose route 36 outward and return services from the west-side bay that actually stop at the ropeway. The stop–facility walk is about one minute; ticket purchase, boarding and descent queues take extra time. Omit the ropeway if returning to Beppu, collecting luggage and reaching Kitahama leave too little time for airport procedures.

Choose west-side route 36 outward and return services that actually stop at the ropeway. The stop–facility walk takes about one minute; allow extra time for tickets, boarding and descent queues. If strong winds, maintenance or late arrival prevent visiting, rest at your Beppu accommodation.
Day 2: move from Beppu to Yufuin
Check out in Beppu and move to Yufuin. If you can leave luggage, walk the street before staying there overnight.

Take a Yufuin-bound route 36 from Beppu Station west bay 1 and get off at the bus centre in front of Yufuin Station. The adult one-way fare is ¥1,100. Check actual-date services in the official timetable below. Temporary direct buses may use a different bay; distinguish them from ordinary route 36 and check large-luggage conditions.

Check whether your Yufuin accommodation can store luggage. Choose lunch between the station and Yunotsubo Street, then browse shops in the afternoon. Do not add a luggage-laden Beppu return trip because you missed day 1’s ropeway. Return for accommodation check-in and dinner. Route 36 costs ¥1,100 one way; this is an accommodation move, so do not add ¥2,200 return.

Ordinary route 36 and temporary direct buses use different Beppu Station bays. Choose an actual Yufuin-bound service after checking stops and operating dates. Check the service’s conditions for large luggage and seats, then ask your Yufuin accommodation about luggage storage, check-in and pickup.
Day 3: Lake Kinrin and Yufuin airport bus
Finish Lake Kinrin walks, then take an airport bus from the Yufuin Station bus centre.

After checkout, if luggage storage and your homebound flight timing allow, walk about 25 minutes from the station towards Yunotsubo Street to Lake Kinrin. Return the same way, adding shopping, photos and breaks to 50 minutes of walking. Morning mist is not guaranteed.

Collect luggage and go to the Yufuin Station bus centre. Choose walking or transport based on your accommodation’s address, with separate time and cost.

Return from Lake Kinrin to collect luggage, then go to the Yufuin Station bus centre. Buses are not scheduled to guarantee flight connections; shorten walks or take an earlier bus if procedure time is tight. If you need an earlier airport arrival, change the previous night’s accommodation base.

Which bus should I take from Beppu to Yufuin?
The basic route uses route 36 from Beppu Station west bay 1. A separate temporary direct bus runs October 1, 2026–March 31, 2027, leaving east bay 5 at 09:30 for Yufuin, at ¥1,100 for adults. If full, check the next ordinary route 36. This direct service information is Beppu–Yufuin only; choose Yufuin–Beppu returns separately.

Does the last Beppu-bound route 36 stop at the ropeway?
Choose a service marked as stopping at the ropeway. The 18:00 departure from Yufuin and opposite-direction 18:20 departure from Beppu Station skip it. Check a stopping return bus and the last descent separately. On flight day, leave time to reach your accommodation and Kitahama’s airport bus.

How do included costs differ between two Beppu nights and moving to Yufuin?
Course A’s ¥10,280 includes combined hells ticket, day 1 route 5 return, ropeway, return route 36 ropeway buses, Kitahama airport bus return and day 2 Mini pass ¥1,100. Course B’s ¥7,500 covers airport–Kitahama, ropeway, return ropeway buses, Beppu–Yufuin and Yufuin–airport. B stays one night each in Beppu and Yufuin. Both exclude accommodation and bathing.
