JR TOKYO Wide Pass: 3-day coverage, pickup and seat reservations

Japan rail pass guide

The JR TOKYO Wide Pass covers Ordinary Car travel for three consecutive days on specified routes in and around Tokyo. It includes eligible JR East Shinkansen and limited-express services plus certain other railways, but excludes the Tōkaidō Shinkansen and JR buses.

Key destinations

Tōkyō · 東京 / Kawaguchiko · 河口湖 / Izukyū-Shimoda · 伊豆急下田 / GALA Yuzawa · ガーラ湯沢

When does this pass suit your itinerary?

Compare the price with your total ordinary ticket costs if your trips around Tokyo fit into three consecutive days. You cannot split the pass into separate days spread across a longer trip.

Who can use it?

You must be a non-Japanese national with a valid passport issued by a country other than Japan. The official eligibility rules do not require Temporary Visitor status. Present your own original passport when purchasing or collecting; it must remain valid throughout the pass period.

Prices and child fares

The official price is JPY 16,000 adult or JPY 8,000 child. Children are aged 6–11 on the purchase date. Children under six do not need a pass if they do not need a reserved seat.

Collection depends on how you buy

JR East lists two purchase routes for this pass: JR-EAST Train Reservation and designated sales locations in Japan. If you buy on JR’s website, collect the actual pass after arrival at a supported passport-reader ticket machine or travel service centre. Bring your original passport; a machine requires one with an IC chip. JR’s published purchase guide does not list an overseas-agency exchange route for this pass.

Covered railways and exclusions

The official coverage area includes the Izu Kyūkō Line towards Izukyū-Shimoda and Fujikyū Railway towards Kawaguchiko. The Tokyo Monorail, Rinkai Line and Jōshin Electric Railway are also included. On the New Shuttle, only the Ōmiya · 大宮–Railway Museum · 鉄道博物館 section is covered. For JR–Tobu through limited-express services, either the departure or arrival station must be a JR station. Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway are not among the covered railways, so pay their fares separately. The Tōkaidō Shinkansen and JR buses are excluded. Do not board Hayabusa or Komachi with the pass alone; JR East's terms require the applicable additional limited-express charge. Some Fujikyū sightseeing trains and reserved seats also require an additional charge. GALA Yuzawa Station operates seasonally in winter and spring. Check the official English map for exact boundary stations.

From purchase to boarding

  1. Choose your routes and start date. The pass covers three consecutive days from that date; you cannot buy multiple passes of this type with overlapping validity periods.

  2. Bring your own original passport. A copy cannot be used to issue the pass, and you cannot lend or transfer it to a family member.

  3. If you bought through JR-EAST Train Reservation, collect the actual pass at a supported travel service centre or passport-reader machine after arriving in Japan. Bring your original passport with an IC chip for machine collection. If buying in Japan, use a designated JR East sales location and bring your original passport.

  4. Obtain reserved-seat tickets before boarding at a JR East reserved-seat machine, counter or travel centre. Holding a pass does not secure a seat. The official guide allows seat reservations from one month before travel.

  5. Use the actual pass at a compatible automatic gate and collect it on the other side. Use the staffed gate where automatic gates are unsupported, including on the New Shuttle section from Omiya to the Railway Museum.

  6. Carry your original passport while travelling. Check the train, car and seat on each reserved-seat ticket. Pay separate fares and charges for routes outside the pass area or trains with additional charges.

Frequently asked questions

Can foreign residents of Japan use it?

Official eligibility is based on non-Japanese nationality and a foreign passport, rather than Temporary Visitor status. Each traveller must show their own original passport. Check any additional conditions attached to an agency’s selling option.

Does it cover the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto or Osaka?

No. The Tokaido Shinkansen is excluded. Journeys outside the TOKYO Wide Pass area require separate tickets.

Can I take a Tobu limited express from Asakusa to Nikko?

Not if both the departure and arrival stations are Tobu stations. For covered through JR–Tobu limited expresses, one end of the journey must be a JR station. Tobu local trains are covered between Shimo-Imaichi · 下今市 and Tobu-Nikko · 東武日光 or Kinugawa-Onsen · 鬼怒川温泉.

Can I use three separate days?

No. The pass is valid for three consecutive days from your chosen start date.

Can I board a reserved-seat train with just the pass?

Get a reserved-seat ticket before using a reserved seat. Tsubasa, Nikko, Kinugawa and SPACIA Kinugawa cannot be boarded without one. Some other limited expresses have separate empty-seat rules; do not apply one rule to every train with reserved seating only.

What if I lose the pass or need different dates?

Lost or stolen passes are not reissued. The type and validity period of an issued pass cannot be changed.

Can an unused pass be refunded?

The official transport conditions allow the seller to refund an unused pass within its validity period after deducting 10%. If a train for which a reserved-seat ticket was issued has already departed, even an unused pass cannot be refunded. For an agency order not yet exchanged, check that seller’s cancellation conditions.
