Gifu Prefecture travel: stay in Gifu City or Takayama?
Base yourself near Takayama Station for the Jinya, old town, Hida Folk Village and Shirakawa-go. Start in Gifu City if Gifu Park and Mt. Kinka views matter more to you. The cities require a separate train journey, so decide first whether to change your hotel base.
Which places should I choose first?
Explore former government rooms and a rice storehouse at the Jinya. The free town museum covers Takayama history and culture; the float exhibition hall shows ornate decoration and carvings. Visit Hida Folk Village for traditional houses, or Shirakawa-go for a walk through a living gassho-style village. Gifu Park and Mt. Kinka offer mountain views in Gifu City, but this is not an itinerary for the closed castle interior. Hida Folk Village · 飛騨の里 / Shirakawa-go · 白川郷
Itineraries by trip length
Choose your overnight cities first, then trip length. One or two nights use Takayama; three or four also offer a Gifu City mountain-view stop before moving to Takayama. Check actual train and bus services for arrival-afternoon and final-morning sightseeing.
2 days / 1 night
Two one-night Takayama options: Jinya and town museum, or a folk-village bus trip followed by Jinya. Neither includes Shirakawa-go, leaving the short stay for city exhibitions or traditional houses.
3 days / 2 nights
Stay two nights at the same Takayama hotel. Visit the Jinya first and town museum last, choosing Hida Folk Village or Shirakawa-go for the middle day. The Shirakawa-go option needs Wada House opening and reservation checks in both directions.
4 days / 3 nights
Three Takayama nights allow folk-village and Shirakawa-go visits on separate days. For Mt. Kinka views too, choose one Gifu City night and two Takayama nights. That option excludes Shirakawa-go; match the transfer-day Hida train with museum viewing time.
5 days / 4 nights
Stay one night in Gifu City for the park and mountain views, then three in Takayama. Visit the Jinya and town museum, finish with the float exhibition hall, and choose Shirakawa-go/Wada House or Hida Folk Village for the remaining day. Castle interiors and street-festival viewing are excluded.

Before choosing transport
Which journeys could a pass replace?
The Shirakawa-go bus return costs 5,600 yen through 30 November 2026. If staying a night in Gifu City before moving to Takayama, the Hida reserved-seat reference for 17 October, searched on 8 October, is 5,230 yen. In a four-night itinerary using both, the 10,830-yen total is below the 19,800-yen adult Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass. This compares only those transport sections, not the whole four-night trip. Decide arrival and departure travel from outside the prefecture before judging the cheaper overall option. See each trip-length itinerary for ordinary fares and excluded transport. From 1 December, the bus return is 5,800 yen and the two-section total with the Hida reference is 11,030 yen.

Consider Hida beef or hoba miso during a Takayama city walk. Hoba miso is miso and ingredients grilled on a magnolia leaf. Choose a Gifu City restaurant on the Gifu Park day; Takayama restaurants are not near Gifu Park. Check each city and restaurant’s opening days, menu and reservation conditions. Meals are separate from transport and admission.

Separate Takayama city walks, bus days for traditional houses or gassho-style village scenery, and mountain views in Gifu City. The groupings below suggest visiting order; adjust for closures and return transport.
Takayama city: Jinya and old town
On arrival afternoon, visit former government rooms and the rice storehouse at the Jinya, then walk around Nakabashi and the old town. The following day, explore Takayama history and culture in former storehouse exhibition rooms at the town museum. These are separate facilities with their own admission times.

Hida Folk Village: a day with relocated houses
Hida Folk Village is an outdoor museum of houses relocated from elsewhere. Reach it by Sarubobo Bus from Takayama Nohi Bus Center. In rain, shorten outdoor walking but allow for paths inside the facility and your return bus. This differs from visiting Shirakawa-go’s living village.

Shirakawa-go: village walks and Wada House
Leave a separate day for a bus trip from Takayama to Shirakawa-go. Choose Wada House if you want to see the public interior of a gassho-style house as well as village paths. Stay out of private living spaces and closed areas. Check reservations for both directions and Wada House opening first.

How do I get from stations to attractions?
Decide your hotel and station exit first. Use walking directions to identify your start and destination; choose outward and return buses and trains in the operator’s timetable for your date. Walking and ride times below exclude ticketing, transfers, boarding waits and sightseeing.
Takayama Station → Jinya
The official station-to-Jinya walk takes about 10 minutes. After visiting, walk around Nakabashi and the old town or return towards the station. From a hotel west of the station, check the additional route through the station area.
Takayama Station east exit → town museum
From the east exit, follow Chuo-dori to the town museum: about 20 minutes in the city’s official guidance. Return along the same route. Exhibitions open at 09:00; choose your departure according to whether you want just the garden or exhibitions too.

Nohi Bus Center → Hida Folk Village → center
Take the Sarubobo Bus from center stand 1 to Hida-no-Sato. The ride takes about 10 minutes; follow entrance signs to the ticket office. The return timetable lists Hida-no-Sato twice, so read the village departure and center arrival rows in the same column.

What should I eat in Takayama?
