Five days in Gifu Prefecture: Shirakawa-go or Hida Folk Village?
See mountain views and stay one night in Gifu City, then move to Takayama for three nights. Choose Shirakawa-go for a living gassho-style village and Wada House, or Hida Folk Village to reduce intercity bus travel and see traditional-house exhibitions. Finish with festival floats at the hall; this does not imply a street-festival date.
Choose a 5 days / 4 nights itinerary
Gifu views, Takayama Jinya, Shirakawa-go and festival floats
Split four nights between one in Gifu City and three in Takayama for mountain views and a gassho-style village. After Gifu Park and Mt. Kinka, move to Takayama for the town museum, Jinya, Shirakawa-go and Wada House, then the float exhibition hall on the last day. Check reservation requirements for both Shirakawa-go buses and Wada House opening.

Day 1: JR Gifu → Gifu Park and Mt. Kinka → Gifu Station
- JR Gifu Station → Gifu Park and Mt. Kinka
At JR Gifu stands 12 or 13, take a bus via Nagarabashi that stops at Gifu Park/Gifu Castle, such as N43. Avoid N11 and new rapid services that do not stop there. Weekday and weekend/holiday timetables differ. Walk about three minutes from the stop to the park, then follow ropeway boarding signs. The stop’s former name was Gifu Park History Museum-mae.

- Mt. Kinka Ropeway boarding station → Mountain viewpoint and Gifu Park
Take the Mt. Kinka Ropeway in the morning and explore the mountain viewpoint. The ride takes about four minutes; queues and summit walks are additional. Gifu Castle’s keep and museum are closed, so their interior exhibitions are unavailable. Follow on-site directions around works, slopes and stairs. Toilets east of the upper station are available, but the castle-side mountain toilets are closed. Descend by ropeway, have lunch and walk the lower park. If strong wind suspends services, choose the lower park only.

Read the park departure and station arrival rows in the same timetable column for your date. After reaching Gifu Station, travel to your booked hotel according to its address.

Gifu Castle’s keep and museum closure is separate from ropeway operations. Planned ropeway maintenance suspensions are 1–28 December 2026 and 7 January–16 February 2027; do not choose the mountain-view route then. On other dates, check last upward and downward rides and the bus back to Gifu Station.
Day 2: Gifu → Takayama → town museum
Transfer to Takayama after Gifu sightseeing. Choose a train arrival leaving time for town museum exhibitions. Bring your luggage because you are changing hotels.
- Gifu → Takayama
Transfer from JR Gifu to Takayama by Hida limited express, having lunch before boarding. In JR Central’s official planner, enter your date, Gifu departure, Takayama arrival and an ordinary-car reserved seat. Check the departure from Gifu and arrival at Takayama; distinguish arrival and departure columns at intermediate stations. The reserved-seat fare below is a reference for a particular search date. Recalculate the basic and limited-express fares for your date and seat type, and check actual availability and operating notices when buying. Choose an arrival leaving time to walk to the museum and see exhibitions.
- Takayama Station → Town museum
From Takayama’s east exit, walk about 20 minutes along Chuo-dori to the town museum. Exhibitions close at 19:00; leave viewing time after the train arrival and walk. Move the museum to another day if arriving late.

Day 4: Shirakawa-go village and Wada House → Takayama
- Takayama Nohi Bus Center → Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal
Board for Shirakawa-go at Nohi Bus Center east of the station and alight at Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal in Ogimachi. - Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal → Wada House public areas
Wada House is about a four-minute walk from Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal. Walking times differ if starting at the village car park or Deai Bridge. It opens 09:00–17:00, but closing days vary; check opening for your date first. Explore the public first and second floors after arriving. Residents live here, so stay out of private areas.

Return to the same hotel after reaching Takayama Nohi Bus Center.
Check reservation markings separately for outward and return Shirakawa-go buses. Reservation-only services require seats booked both ways. Wada House has irregular closing days; check public opening for your date and stay out of private living areas.
Day 5: Takayama Festival Floats Exhibition Hall → station
After Shirakawa-go, finish with festival floats at the exhibition hall. Return to Takayama Station and depart after the exhibitions.
- Takayama Station → Visiting Takayama Festival Floats Exhibition Hall
The hall at 178 Sakuramachi is about a 20-minute walk from Takayama Station. Look closely at the gold-leaf decoration and carvings of actual autumn-festival floats in the morning. Displays rotate, so a particular float cannot be guaranteed. A hall visit is separate from a street-festival date.

Frequently asked questions
Can I spend a day in Gero during a five-day trip?
Replace the Shirakawa-go or folk-village day with Gero. Take a bus from Nohi Bus Center to Gero Station, walk about eight minutes to the Onsen Museum, then return to the same Takayama hotel. Check both departures and museum closures first. The museum closes on Thursdays, or the next day if Thursday is a public holiday, and on 30–31 December. Ask the facility whether it opens on 29 December.
The general adult return bus and museum subtotal is 2,520 yen, excluded from the routes above. Meals, bathing and accommodation cost extra; this local bus is not covered by the tourist pass. Give Shirakawa-go a separate day if you want both. Check the chosen facility and hotel separately before adding bathing or a Gero night.

Does a float exhibition hall visit include a street festival?
At the hall, view gold-leaf decoration and carvings on actual autumn-festival floats indoors. A final-day hall visit does not imply a street-festival date. Displays rotate; hours are 09:00–17:00 March–November and 09:00–16:30 December–February. Choose a departure allowing the approximately 20-minute walk from the station and the return after visiting.
