Four days in Gifu Prefecture: stay in Takayama or start in Gifu City?
Stay three nights in Takayama for separate folk-village and Shirakawa-go visits. To add mountain views, spend one night in Gifu City, then transfer by Hida limited express for two Takayama nights. Choose a train arrival leaving time for the town museum.
Choose a 4 days / 3 nights itinerary
Jinya, Hida Folk Village, Shirakawa-go and town museum
Stay three nights in Takayama for traditional houses and a walk through gassho-style village scenery. Visit the Jinya first, then give Hida Folk Village and Shirakawa-go a day each. Finish with the town museum before departing.

For Mt. Kinka scenery and traditional Takayama buildings, stay one night in Gifu City, then two in Takayama. Transfer by Hida limited express on day two and visit the town museum, followed by the folk village and final-day Jinya. Choose a train arriving with time for the museum.

Day 1: Takayama Station → Jinya → old town → hotel
- Takayama Station → Jinya
Leave JR Takayama Station around noon, have lunch and walk about 10 minutes to the Jinya. Choose your arrival service around last admission so you can see inside on day one.
- Jinya → Sightseeing and rest
Visit the Jinya in the afternoon. Explore former government rooms and the rice storehouse, then walk around Nakabashi and the old town. April–October hours are 08:45–17:00, last admission 16:30; November–March hours are 08:45–16:30, last admission 16:00. Follow on-site instructions where shoes must be removed.
- Jinya → Travel to the station and hotel
Rest and have dinner in the city, then go to your booked hotel. Check each restaurant’s opening days, queues and prices. For a late arrival, see whether you can still meet Jinya last admission; otherwise, choose another day and adjust other visits and returns too.
Pay admission and remove your shoes to visit the Jinya interior. Check last admission and temporary closures for your date, then follow walking guidance towards the old town or station afterwards.
Day 2: Nohi Bus Center → Hida Folk Village → Takayama
- Nohi Bus Center → Hida Folk Village
Go to Nohi Bus Center east of the station and take the Sarubobo Bus from stand 1 to Hida-no-Sato. Read the center departure and village arrival rows in the same timetable column, and select a return bus before leaving. Allow time to buy tickets and find the stand. For a combined ticket, check purchase and exchange arrangements at the center counter first.

- Hida-no-Sato bus stop → Ticket office → relocated traditional houses
Alight at Hida-no-Sato and follow entrance signs to the ticket office. Explore relocated houses and outdoor grounds, with lunch and rest time. Walking and ticket queues are additional to bus ride time. Basic hours are 08:30–17:00, year-round. Follow on-site guidance for areas open to visitors in each house. Shorten outdoor sightseeing if snow or rain makes walking difficult.

- Hida Folk Village → Station and the same hotel
Take a bus from Hida-no-Sato towards Takayama Nohi Bus Center. Because the circular timetable lists Hida-no-Sato twice, read the village departure and center arrival rows in the same column. Before staying longer, check the next return bus and closing time. Return to the same hotel to rest, then eat in the city. Evening events and separate activities are excluded from daytime admission.

Choose the 1,000-yen return-bus and admission combined ticket, or 1,120 yen in individual tickets. Check the return Sarubobo stop and same-day service changes.
Day 3: Shirakawa-go village and Wada House → Takayama
- Takayama Nohi Bus Center → Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal
Board for Shirakawa-go at Nohi Bus Center east of the station and alight at Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal in Ogimachi. Check reservation markings for both outward and return services in the Nohi timetable. Reserve seats both ways on reservation-only services and follow your ticket’s boarding instructions. Check tickets and the stand at the center before departure. Road conditions can delay buses; plan to return to the same Takayama hotel tonight.
- Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal → Wada House public areas
Wada House is about a four-minute walk from Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal. Walking times differ if starting at the village car park or Deai Bridge. It opens 09:00–17:00, but closing days vary; check opening for your date first. Explore the public first and second floors after arriving. Residents live here, so stay out of private areas.

- Wada House → Public village paths and lunch
Yesterday’s Hida Folk Village is an outdoor museum of relocated houses. Today, you explore a living village and an open house. Visit Wada House, have lunch and walk public paths. Check restaurant opening and separate fees for other houses or the viewpoint shuttle. If Wada House is closed, choose a public walk, but its interior will be unavailable.

- Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal → Takayama Nohi Bus Center → same hotel
Return to Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal in time for your departure and check the ticket and stand. Follow your purchased ticket’s boarding instructions. Missing a reserved bus does not mean you can immediately board another; ask the operator about departures, seats and ticket-change conditions. Return to the same hotel after reaching Takayama Nohi Bus Center.
Check reservation markings separately for outward and return Shirakawa-go buses. Reservation-only services require seats booked both ways. Wada House has irregular closing days; check public opening for your date and stay out of private living areas.
Day 4: Takayama Station → town museum → station
Finish with Takayama history and festival exhibitions at the town museum. Return to the station after city sightseeing instead of making another Shirakawa-go trip.
- Takayama Station → Town museum
From the east exit, walk about 20 minutes along Chuo-dori to the town museum. Spend the morning exploring exhibitions on festivals, machiya houses and local life before departure.
Town museum walking access from the stationTown museum operations
- Town museum exhibition rooms → Exhibitions and garden
Exhibition rooms open 09:00–19:00 and the garden opens 07:00–21:00, free of charge. Check temporary notices despite there being no regular closing days. Exhibition entry starts at 09:00 even though the garden opens earlier. In rain, shorten street walks and focus on indoor exhibitions.
Town museum walking access from the stationTown museum operations
- Town museum → Takayama Station and departure preparation
After visiting, have lunch in the city and walk about 20 minutes back along Chuo-dori. Choose an afternoon departure with time to reach the boarding area. For an early-morning departure, omit the final-day museum or reorder your visits.
The town museum is a separate free exhibition facility from the Jinya. Check the Chuo-dori walking route from the station’s east side and temporary closures. Choose a departure that lets you reach the boarding area after sightseeing.
Included: Jinya 500 yen + folk village admission and return-bus combined ticket 1,000 + Shirakawa-go bus at 2,800 yen each way + Wada House 400. Buying folk-village admission and buses separately adds 120 yen; the town museum is free.
Extra costs and conditions: Three nights’ Takayama accommodation, meals, luggage storage and transport to and from outside the prefecture. Other houses, the open-air museum, viewpoint shuttle, activities and evening events cost extra.
Shirakawa-go adult bus fares through 30 November 2026 are 2,800 yen one way or 5,600 return. From 1 December they rise to 2,900 and 5,800 respectively. Add 200 yen to the displayed subtotal: 7,700 yen with the folk-village combined ticket or 7,820 buying separately. The difference between this bus return and the pass price becomes 14,000 yen.
Based on general adult admission and selected tickets, checked 8 October 2026. Check Wada House opening and both bus seats for your date. Choose either the Hida Folk Village combined ticket or separate admission and bus tickets, checking sales and exchange conditions. This is not a whole-trip budget including accommodation and meals.
The section included in the ordinary-ticket versus pass comparison is the 5,600-yen Shirakawa-go bus return. For that section alone, ordinary tickets cost 14,200 yen less than the pass. The Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass costs 19,800 yen per adult for five consecutive days and requires foreign nationality with Temporary Visitor status. Carry your passport and present it when requested by train or station staff. It covers Gifu → Takayama JR travel and designated Takayama → Shirakawa-go buses, but check excluded bus services and reservations separately. Ordinary-car reserved seats are available up to six times on specified sections; obtain a reserved-seat ticket before boarding. Gifu Park city buses, Sarubobo buses, the ropeway and attraction admission cost extra. Compare whole-route ordinary fares after deciding your arrival and departure travel from outside the prefecture. Buying a pass does not secure seats.

For Mt. Kinka scenery and traditional Takayama buildings, stay one night in Gifu City, then two in Takayama. Transfer by Hida limited express on day two and visit the town museum, followed by the folk village and final-day Jinya. Choose a train arriving with time for the museum.
Day 1: JR Gifu → Gifu Park and Mt. Kinka → Gifu Station
- JR Gifu Station → Gifu Park and Mt. Kinka
At JR Gifu stands 12 or 13, take a bus via Nagarabashi that stops at Gifu Park/Gifu Castle, such as N43. Avoid N11 and new rapid services that do not stop there. Weekday and weekend/holiday timetables differ. Walk about three minutes from the stop to the park, then follow ropeway boarding signs. The stop’s former name was Gifu Park History Museum-mae.

- Mt. Kinka Ropeway boarding station → Mountain viewpoint and Gifu Park
Take the Mt. Kinka Ropeway in the morning and explore the mountain viewpoint. The ride takes about four minutes; queues and summit walks are additional. Gifu Castle’s keep and museum are closed, so their interior exhibitions are unavailable. Follow on-site directions around works, slopes and stairs. Toilets east of the upper station are available, but the castle-side mountain toilets are closed. Descend by ropeway, have lunch and walk the lower park. If strong wind suspends services, choose the lower park only.

Gifu Castle’s keep and museum closure is separate from ropeway operations. Planned ropeway maintenance suspensions are 1–28 December 2026 and 7 January–16 February 2027; do not choose the mountain-view route then. On other dates, check last upward and downward rides and the bus back to Gifu Station.
Day 2: Gifu → Takayama → town museum
Take the Hida limited express from Gifu and move your hotel base to Takayama. Visit the town museum after arrival and eat in the city. Bring your luggage because you are changing hotels.
- Gifu → Takayama
Transfer from JR Gifu to Takayama by Hida limited express, having lunch before boarding. In JR Central’s official planner, enter your date, Gifu departure, Takayama arrival and an ordinary-car reserved seat. Check the departure from Gifu and arrival at Takayama; distinguish arrival and departure columns at intermediate stations. The reserved-seat fare below is a reference for a particular search date. Recalculate the basic and limited-express fares for your date and seat type, and check actual availability and operating notices when buying. Choose an arrival leaving time to walk to the museum and see exhibitions.
- Takayama Station → Town museum
From Takayama’s east exit, walk about 20 minutes along Chuo-dori to the town museum. Exhibitions close at 19:00; leave viewing time after the train arrival and walk. Move the museum to another day if arriving late.

Based on general adult admission and selected tickets, checked 8 October 2026. The 5,230-yen Hida fare is a search result for a Gifu → Takayama ordinary-car reserved seat on 17 October 2026. Choose either the folk-village combined ticket or separate admission and bus tickets, checking sales and exchange conditions. This is not a whole-trip budget including accommodation and meals.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need the Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass?
Ordinary tickets are also an option. The pass covers JR travel from Gifu to Takayama and designated buses between Nohi Bus Center and Shirakawa-go for five consecutive days, but check excluded bus services and reservation conditions. Coverage and whether buying the pass saves money are separate comparisons.
For a Shirakawa-go trip from a three-night Takayama base, the bus return costs 5,600 yen. For a move from Gifu to Takayama, the Hida ordinary-car reserved-seat reference for 17 October, searched on 8 October, is 5,230 yen. These are different itineraries, so do not combine the two fares into one trip. The stated sections cost less than the 19,800-yen adult pass, but you cannot decide the cheaper whole-trip option before including date-specific fares and travel to and from outside the prefecture. City buses, ropeway and admission cost extra. Check foreign-national Temporary Visitor eligibility and reserved-seat ticketing. The 5,600-yen bus return applies through 30 November; from 1 December it is 5,800, reducing the difference from the pass price from 14,200 to 14,000 yen. Carry your passport and show it when train or station staff request it.
