Jinya, Hida Folk Village, Shirakawa-go and town museum

Stay three Takayama nights for old homes and a gassho village walk. Visit Jinya first, give Hida Folk Village and Shirakawa-go separate days, then see the town museum before departing.

Day 1: Takayama Station → Jinya → old town → hotel

  1. Takayama Station → Jinya

Leave JR Takayama around noon, have lunch and walk about 10 minutes to Jinya. Choose arrival transport meeting last entry for first-day interior viewing.

    Takayama Jinya: access

  2. Jinya → Viewing and rest

View Jinya interiors in the afternoon: former government rooms and rice storage, then Nakabashi and old streets. From April to October, Jinya is open from 8:45 am to 5 pm, with entry until 4:30 pm. From November to March, it is open from 8:45 am to 4:30 pm, with entry until 4 pm. Follow on-site shoe-removal instructions.

  3. Jinya → Station and hotel

Rest in town, have dinner and head to your booked hotel. Check each restaurant's opening days, waits and prices. For a late arrival, check Jinya's cut-off and choose another viewing day if necessary, adjusting other visits and returns.

    Takayama Jinya: visiting guide

Jinya interiors require admission and removing shoes. Check your date's last entry and temporary closures, then follow walking guidance towards the old town or station afterwards.

Day 2: Nohi Bus Center → Hida Folk Village → Takayama

  1. Nohi Bus Center → Hida Folk Village

Go to Nohi Bus Center east of the station. Take Sarubobo from stand 1 to Hida Folk Village. Match centre departure and village arrival rows in one service column and choose the return before leaving. Allow time for tickets and finding the stand. For a combined ticket, check purchase and exchange methods at the counter first.

  2. Hida Folk Village stop → Ticket office → relocated houses

Alight at Hida Folk Village and follow entrance signs to the ticket office. Explore relocated houses and outdoor spaces, allowing lunch and rest. Walking from the stop and ticket queues are outside bus riding time. The village is usually open from 8:30 am to 5 pm, year-round. Follow on-site guidance for each house's open areas. Shorten outdoor viewing if rain or snow makes walking difficult.

  3. Hida Folk Village → Station and same hotel

Take the Takayama Nohi Bus Center-bound bus back. The loop timetable lists the village twice: match village departure and centre arrival rows in one column. To stay longer, check the next return and facility closing first. Rest at the same hotel afterwards, then dine in town. Evening events and separate activities are outside daytime admission.

Choose either the JPY 1,000 return bus and admission combined ticket or JPY 1,120 in separate tickets. Check the return Sarubobo stop and same-day changes.

Day 3: Shirakawa-go village and Wada House → Takayama

  1. Takayama Nohi Bus Center → Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal

Take a Shirakawa-go bus from Nohi Bus Center east of the station to Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal in Ogimachi. Check reservation symbols separately for outward and return services. Reserve both directions for reservation-only services and follow ticket boarding guidance. Check tickets and stand at the centre before leaving. Roads may delay buses; plan to return to the same Takayama hotel today.

  2. Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal → Wada House public areas

Walk about four minutes from Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal to Wada House; walks from the village car park or Deai Bridge differ. Listed hours are 9 am–5 pm, but closures are irregular; confirm opening for your date. View the public spaces on Levels 1 and 2 after arrival. Residents live here; stay out of private areas.

Yesterday's Hida Folk Village is an outdoor museum of relocated houses. Today, explore a lived-in village and a house open to visitors. Have lunch and walk public paths after Wada House. Check restaurant opening and fees for other houses and the viewpoint shuttle separately. If Wada House is closed, choose public walks; interiors remain unavailable.

  4. Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal → Takayama Nohi Bus Center → same hotel

Return to Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal for your selected bus, checking ticket and stand. Follow boarding guidance on the purchased ticket. Missing a reserved service does not let you immediately board another bus. Ask the operator about later services, seats and ticket changes. Return to the same hotel after reaching Takayama Nohi Bus Center.

Check reservation symbols separately for outward and return Shirakawa-go buses, booking both directions on reservation-only services. Wada House closures are irregular; confirm public access for your date. Do not enter private living areas.

Day 4: Takayama Station → town museum → station

View Takayama history and festival displays at the town museum on the final day. Return to the station after city viewing, without another Shirakawa-go round trip.

  1. Takayama Station → Town museum

Walk about 20 minutes along Chuo-dori from the east exit to the town museum. View exhibitions in the morning on city festivals, machiya and daily life on this final day.

  2. Town museum exhibition rooms → Exhibition rooms and garden

Exhibition rooms are open from 9 am to 7 pm, and the garden is open from 7 am to 9 pm. Both are free. There are no regular closure days; check temporary notices before visiting. The garden opens earlier, but rooms open only from 9 am. In rain, shorten street walks and focus on interiors.

  3. Town museum → Takayama Station and departure preparation

Have lunch in town, then walk about 20 minutes along Chuo-dori to the station. Allow boarding-position access and choose an afternoon departure. For an early-morning departure, omit final-day museum viewing or change the order.

    Town museum: station walk

The town museum is a free exhibition facility separate from Jinya. Check the Chuo-dori route from the station's east side and temporary closures, then choose a departure allowing you to reach the boarding position after sightseeing.

Transport and admission: Per adult: JPY 7,500 with combined ticket / JPY 7,620 separately

Included: Jinya JPY 500 + folk-village admission and return bus combined ticket JPY 1,000 + Shirakawa-go buses JPY 2,800 × 2 + Wada House JPY 400. Separate folk-village admission and buses add JPY 120. The town museum is free.

Separate costs and conditions: Three Takayama hotel nights, meals, luggage storage and travel to and from the prefecture cost extra. Other houses, open-air museum, viewpoint shuttle, activities and evening events are separate.

Shirakawa-go adult buses cost JPY 2,800 one way or JPY 5,600 return through 30 November 2026. From travel on 1 December, fares become JPY 2,900 one way or JPY 5,800 return: add JPY 200 to the shown subtotal. From 1 December, subtotals are JPY 7,700 with combined tickets or JPY 7,820 with separate tickets; the bus-return versus pass-price difference becomes JPY 14,000.

These costs use regular adult fares and selected ticket types checked on 8 October 2026. Confirm Wada House opening and return-bus seats for your date. Choose either the folk-village combined ticket or separate admission and bus tickets, checking sales and exchange conditions. This is not a whole-trip budget including accommodation and meals.

The pass-eligible regular fare here is the JPY 5,600 Shirakawa-go bus return. For this segment alone, regular tickets cost JPY 14,200 less than the pass. Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass costs JPY 19,800 per adult for five consecutive days, requiring foreign nationality and Temporary Visitor status. Carry your passport and show it when train/station staff request. Gifu → Takayama JR and designated Takayama → Shirakawa-go buses are covered, but check excluded bus services and reservations separately. Up to six ordinary-car reserved-seat uses are allowed on specified routes; collect seat tickets before boarding. Gifu Park city buses, Sarubobo, ropeway and attraction admission are separate. Choose arrival and departure routes outside the prefecture before comparing all regular fares. Buying a pass does not secure seats.

Day 1: JR Gifu → Gifu Park and Mt. Kinka → Gifu Station

  1. JR Gifu Station → Gifu Park and Mt. Kinka

From JR Gifu stands 12/13, choose a bus via Nagara Bridge, such as N43, stopping at Gifu Park/Gifu Castle. Avoid services such as N11 or the new rapid service that skip this stop. Frequently asked questions

Do I need the tourist pass or can I use regular tickets?

You can use regular tickets. The five-consecutive-day pass covers Gifu → Takayama JR and designated Nohi Bus Center ↔ Shirakawa-go buses; check excluded services and reservations. Compare coverage separately from value.

With three Takayama nights and Shirakawa-go, return buses cost JPY 5,600. Moving from Gifu to Takayama uses a Hida ordinary-car reserved-seat reference of JPY 5,230, searched on 8 October for 17 October. These are different itineraries; do not combine their fares as one trip. The listed segments cost less than the adult JPY 19,800 pass, but whole-trip value requires arrival and departure routes outside the prefecture and date-specific fares. City buses, ropeway and admission are separate. Check foreign-nationality and Temporary Visitor eligibility and reserved-seat ticket conditions. The JPY 5,600 bus return applies through 30 November; from 1 December it becomes JPY 5,800, reducing the pass-price difference from JPY 14,200 to JPY 14,000. Carry your passport and show it if train/station staff request.
