Jinya, Hida Folk Village, Shirakawa-go, and City Museum

For traditional houses and a walk through gassho village scenery, stay three nights in Takayama. Visit the Jinya on day 1, then give Hida Folk Village and Shirakawa-go separate days. Visit the city museum before leaving on the final day.

Day 1 · Takayama Station → Jinya → old town → hotel

  1. Takayama Station → Jinya

Start from JR Takayama Station around noon, eat lunch, and go to the Jinya, about a ten-minute walk from the station. Choose an arrival that leaves time before the Jinya's entry cutoff for an interior visit on day 1.

    Takayama Jinya: directions

  2. Jinya → Viewing and break

See the Jinya interior in the afternoon. Explore the former government-office rooms and rice storehouse, then continue outside to Nakabashi and the old town. The Jinya opens 8:45 a.m.–5:00 p.m. in April–October, with last entry at 4:30 p.m. In November–March, it opens 8:45 a.m.–4:30 p.m., with last entry at 4:00 p.m. Follow on-site guidance in spaces where you remove your shoes.

  3. Jinya → Station or hotel

Rest in the city and eat dinner after viewing, then go to your booked hotel. Check each restaurant's operating days, wait, and prices. If arriving late, check whether you can meet the Jinya entry cutoff or move the visit to another day, adjusting that day's sightseeing and return services too.

Pay admission and remove your shoes to visit the Jinya interior. Check your date's entry cutoff and temporary closures, then follow walking directions toward the old town or station after viewing.

Day 2 · Nohi Bus Center → Hida Folk Village → Takayama

  1. Nohi Bus Center → Hida Folk Village

Go to the Nohi Bus Center east of the station. Take Sarubobo from boarding point 1 to Hida Folk Village. Before leaving, read the center-departure and village-arrival rows in the same timetable column and choose a return too. Allow time to buy tickets and find your boarding point. For a set ticket, ask at the bus-center counter about purchase or exchange first.

  2. Hida Folk Village bus stop → Ticket office → relocated traditional houses

Follow entrance signs from the Hida Folk Village stop to the ticket office. Inside, explore relocated traditional houses and outdoor spaces, with time for lunch and a break. Walking from the stop and waiting for tickets are separate from the bus ride. Regular hours are 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m., year-round. Follow on-site guidance on accessible areas of individual houses. Shorten outdoor viewing if snow or rain makes walking difficult.

  3. Hida Folk Village → Station and same hotel

Return from Hida Folk Village on a bus toward Takayama Nohi Bus Center. The loop timetable lists the village twice; read its departure row and the center-arrival row in the same column. Before extending your visit, check the next return and facility closing time. Back at the center, return to the same hotel for a break and eat dinner in the city. Evening events and separate activities are outside daytime admission.

Choose the ¥1,000 round-trip bus and admission set or ¥1,120 in separate tickets for Hida Folk Village. Check the return Sarubobo stop and changes on the day.

Day 3 · Shirakawa-go village and Wada House → Takayama

  1. Takayama Nohi Bus Center → Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal

Take a Shirakawa-go-bound bus from the Nohi Bus Center east of the station to Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal in Ogimachi. Check reservation markings separately for outbound and return services in Nohi Bus's timetable. Reserve seats in both directions on reservation services and follow your ticket's boarding guidance. Confirm tickets and the boarding point at the center before leaving. Roads may delay buses, so plan to return to the same Takayama hotel that day.

  2. Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal → Wada House public areas

Wada House is about a four-minute walk from Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal. Walking time differs if starting at the village parking lot or Deai Bridge. The house opens 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., but closing days are irregular, so check opening before visiting. After your bus arrives, explore the public first and second floors. Residents live here; do not enter private areas.

  3. Wada House → Public village paths and lunch

Yesterday's Hida Folk Village is an outdoor museum of relocated traditional houses. Today, explore a village where residents live and a house open to visitors. After Wada House, eat lunch in the village and walk public paths. Check restaurant operations and separate charges for other houses or observation-area shuttles. If Wada House is closed, switch to public paths, with no interior visit.

  4. Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal → Takayama Nohi Bus Center → same hotel

Return to Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal for your booked service and confirm your ticket and boarding point. Follow your purchased ticket's boarding guidance. Missing a reserved bus does not mean you can immediately board another. Ask the operator about the next service, seats, and ticket-change conditions. After reaching Takayama Nohi Bus Center, return to the same hotel.

Check reservation markings for outbound and return Shirakawa-go buses separately. Reserve both directions when using reservation services. Wada House has irregular closing days, so check opening for your date. Do not enter private living spaces.

Day 4 · Takayama Station → city museum → station

On the final day, see Takayama history and festival exhibits at the city museum. Stay in the city and return to the station afterward, without another Shirakawa-go round trip.

  1. Takayama Station → City museum

Walk about 20 minutes along Chuo-dori from Takayama Station's east exit to the museum. Explore the exhibits in the morning. Your final day focuses on the city's festival, townhouses, and everyday history.

  2. City museum exhibition rooms → Exhibition rooms and garden

Exhibition rooms open 9:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m. and the garden opens 7:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m., with free admission. There is no regular closing day, but check temporary closure notices before visiting. Even though the garden opens earlier, exhibition access begins at 9:00 a.m. In rain, shorten street walks and focus on indoor displays.

  3. City museum → Takayama Station and departure preparation

After viewing, eat lunch in the city and walk about 20 minutes back along Chuo-dori to the station. Choose an afternoon departure that leaves time to reach your boarding point. If you must leave early in the morning, skip the final-day museum or change the visit order.

City museum walking access from the station

The city museum is a separate free exhibition facility from the Jinya. Check the walk along Chuo-dori from the station's east side and temporary closures. Choose an onward service leaving time to finish sightseeing and reach its boarding point.

Transportation and admission: Per adult: ¥7,500 with set ticket / ¥7,620 with separate tickets

Included: Jinya ¥500 + Hida Folk Village admission and round-trip bus set ¥1,000 + Shirakawa-go bus ¥2,800 × 2 + Wada House ¥400. Separate Hida Folk Village admission and bus tickets add ¥120. The city museum is free.

Separate costs and conditions: Three nights in Takayama, meals, luggage storage, and transportation into and out of the prefecture. Other houses, the outdoor folk museum, observation-area shuttles, activities, and evening events are separate.

Shirakawa-go bus fares through November 30, 2026 are ¥2,800 one way or ¥5,600 round trip for adults. From December 1, fares become ¥2,900 one way or ¥5,800 round trip. Add ¥200 to the displayed round-trip subtotal. From December 1, subtotals are ¥7,700 with the set ticket or ¥7,820 with separate tickets; the gap between this bus round trip and the pass price is ¥14,000.

Based on regular adult admission and selected ticket types checked October 8, 2026. Check Wada House opening and round-trip Shirakawa-go seats for your date. Choose either the Hida Folk Village set ticket or separate admission and bus tickets, and check set-ticket purchase and exchange conditions. This is not a full-trip budget including lodging and meals.

The pass comparison covers the ¥5,600 Shirakawa-go bus round trip. Using only this segment in the current itinerary, regular bus tickets cost ¥14,200 less than the pass. The Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass costs ¥19,800 for adults and is valid for five consecutive days. It requires foreign nationality and Temporary Visitor status. Carry your passport and show it when train or station staff request it. Coverage includes JR from Gifu to Takayama and designated Takayama–Shirakawa-go buses, but check excluded bus services and reservations separately. Up to six ordinary-car reserved-seat uses are allowed on specified segments; obtain reserved-seat tickets before boarding. Gifu Park city buses, Sarubobo buses, the ropeway, and attraction admission are separate. Compare full regular-ticket costs after deciding your routes into and out of the prefecture. Buying a pass does not secure seats.

From Gifu Views to Takayama Houses and Jinya

For Mt. Kinka views and Takayama's traditional buildings, stay one night in Gifu City, then move to Takayama for two nights. 1. JR Gifu Station → Gifu Park and Mt. Kinka

From JR Gifu Station boarding points 12 or 13, take a bus via Nagara Bridge, such as N43, that stops at Gifu Koen/Gifu-jo. Avoid N11 and new rapid services that skip this stop. Weekday and Saturday/holiday timetables differ; choose for your date. The park is about a three-minute walk from the stop. Follow signs through the park to the ropeway boarding point. The stop was formerly called Gifu Koen Rekishi Hakubutsukan-mae.

The restroom east of the summit station is available, but the mountain restroom near the castle is closed. Ride down after viewing, eat lunch, and walk the park below. Frequently asked questions

Do I need the Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass, or can I use regular tickets?

Regular tickets are an option. The pass covers JR from Gifu to Takayama and designated buses between Takayama Nohi Bus Center and Shirakawa-go for five consecutive days, but check excluded bus services and reservations. Coverage and whether the pass saves money are separate comparisons.

For three nights in Takayama with a Shirakawa-go day trip, the bus round trip is ¥5,600. For a hotel change from Gifu to Takayama, the Hida ordinary-car reserved-seat reference is ¥5,230 for October 17, searched October 8. These itineraries visit different cities, so do not combine those fares as one trip's costs. Each listed segment costs less in regular tickets than the ¥19,800 adult pass, but a full-trip comparison requires transportation into and out of the prefecture and fares for your dates. City buses, ropeway, and admission are separate. Check foreign-national Temporary Visitor eligibility and reserved-seat ticket issuance. The Shirakawa-go round trip is ¥5,600 through November 30 and ¥5,800 from December 1, reducing its difference from the pass from ¥14,200 to ¥14,000. Carry your passport and show it when train or station staff request it.

Coverage does not secure round-trip seats; reserve each reservation bus separately.
