Five Days in Gifu: Shirakawa-go or Hida Folk Village?

See Gifu City's mountain views on day 1 and stay one night, then move to Takayama for three nights. Choose Shirakawa-go for an inhabited gassho-style village and Wada House, or Hida Folk Village for traditional-house exhibits with less intercity bus travel. See floats at the exhibition hall on the final day; this does not mean the street festival takes place that day.

From Gifu Views to Takayama Jinya, Shirakawa-go, and Festival Floats

For mountain views and a gassho-style village, stay one night in Gifu City and three in Takayama. Visit Gifu Park and Mt. Kinka, then move to Takayama for the city museum, Jinya, Shirakawa-go and Wada House, and the Festival Floats Exhibition Hall on the final day. Check reservation requirements for buses in both directions and Wada House's opening schedule.

Day 1 · JR Gifu Station → Gifu Park and Mt. Kinka → station

  1. JR Gifu Station → Gifu Park and Mt. Kinka

From JR Gifu Station boarding points 12 or 13, take a bus via Nagara Bridge, such as N43, that stops at Gifu Koen/Gifu-jo. Avoid N11 and new rapid services that skip this stop. Weekday and Saturday/holiday timetables differ; choose for your date. The park is about a three-minute walk from the stop. Follow signs through the park to the ropeway boarding point. The stop was formerly called Gifu Koen Rekishi Hakubutsukan-mae.

  2. Mt. Kinka Ropeway boarding point → Mountain observation area and Gifu Park

This plan takes Mt. Kinka Ropeway in the morning for mountain views. The ride takes about four minutes; waiting and walking on the mountain are extra. Gifu Castle's keep and museum are closed, so interior castle exhibits are unavailable. Follow on-site guidance in construction areas and on slopes and stairs. The restroom east of the summit station is available, but the mountain restroom near the castle is closed. Ride down after viewing, eat lunch, and walk the park below. If high winds or other conditions suspend service, switch to the lower park only.

Can I add a Gero day trip to a five-day itinerary?

Replace the Shirakawa-go or Hida Folk Village day with Gero. Take a bus from Nohi Bus Center to the stop in front of Gero Station, visit the Onsen Museum about eight minutes away on foot, then return to the same Takayama hotel. Check round-trip services and museum closures for your date. The museum closes Thursdays, or the next day after a Thursday public holiday, and December 30–31. Ask the facility about December 29 opening.

Adult round-trip bus fares plus museum admission total ¥2,520, excluded from the itinerary subtotals above. Meals, bathing, and lodging are separate; this local bus is outside the tourist pass.
