Gifu City or Takayama: Where Should You Stay?
Stay near Takayama Station for the Jinya, old town, Hida Folk Village, or a Shirakawa-go day trip. Start in Gifu City if Gifu Park and Mt. Kinka views are your priority. A separate train journey connects the two cities, so decide whether to change hotels before planning both.

Which Attractions Fit Your Trip?
See the Jinya's former government-office rooms and rice storehouse. The free city museum covers Takayama's history and culture, while the festival-float exhibition hall brings you close to ornate decoration and carvings. Choose Hida Folk Village for traditional houses or Shirakawa-go for a walk through an inhabited gassho-style village. Gifu Park and Mt. Kinka offer mountain views, but the closed Gifu Castle interior is outside these itineraries. Hida Folk Village · 飛騨の里 / Shirakawa-go · 白川郷
Itineraries by trip length
Choose your overnight city before the trip length. One- and two-night trips use Takayama as a base. Three- and four-night options also include Gifu City mountain views before moving to Takayama. Check actual trains and buses before counting on sightseeing on your arrival afternoon or departure morning.
2 days, 1 night
Spend one night in Takayama, choosing the Jinya and city museum or a Hida Folk Village bus trip followed by the Jinya. Neither option includes a Shirakawa-go round trip, leaving a short stay for city exhibits or traditional houses.
3 days, 2 nights
Spend two nights at the same Takayama hotel. Visit the Jinya and city museum on the first and last days, with Hida Folk Village or Shirakawa-go in between. For Shirakawa-go, check Wada House opening and reservations in both bus directions.
4 days, 3 nights
Three nights in Takayama let you visit Hida Folk Village and Shirakawa-go on different days. For Mt. Kinka views too, choose one night in Gifu City and two in Takayama. That option excludes Shirakawa-go; check the Limited Express Hida and museum viewing time on your hotel-change day.
5 days, 4 nights
Spend one night in Gifu City for the park and mountain views, then three in Takayama. Visit the Jinya and city museum, with the festival-float exhibition hall on the final day. Use the remaining day for Shirakawa-go and Wada House or Hida Folk Village. Gifu Castle's interior and the street festival are excluded.

Before choosing transportation
Which transportation can a pass replace?
Through November 30, 2026, the Shirakawa-go round-trip bus fare is ¥5,600. If you stay one night in Gifu City before moving to Takayama, the reserved-seat Hida fare is a ¥5,230 reference for October 17, checked October 8. In the four-night route using both segments, the total is ¥10,830, below the adult ¥19,800 Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass price. This compares only those transportation segments in the four-night itinerary. Choose your arrival and departure outside the prefecture before deciding which is cheaper for the full trip. See each trip-length itinerary for regular-ticket costs and transportation outside pass coverage. From December 1, the Shirakawa-go round trip is ¥5,800; with the Hida reference fare, the two segments total ¥11,030.

For the Limited Express Hida from Gifu to Takayama or a Shirakawa-go bus, compare the Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass's coverage. Gifu city buses, Sarubobo buses, the ropeway, and admission are separate. Choose after comparing regular tickets for your actual route with the pass price.

During Takayama city walks, consider Hida beef dishes or hoba miso for a meal. Hoba miso is miso and other ingredients grilled on a magnolia leaf. On your Gifu Park day, choose a restaurant in Gifu City. Takayama restaurants are not near Gifu Park. Check the city, your chosen shop's operating days, menu, and reservation conditions. Meals are separate from transportation and admission.

How Do You Get from the Station to Each Attraction?
Choose your hotel and station exit first. Use walking directions to check the start and destination, and the operator's timetable for your date to choose outbound and return buses or trains. The times below exclude ticket purchases, transfers, boarding waits, and sightseeing.
Takayama Station → Jinya
Official guidance gives a walk of about ten minutes from Takayama Station to the Jinya. After visiting, continue toward Nakabashi and the old town or return to the station area. From a hotel west of the station, check the extra route through the station.
Takayama Station east exit → city museum
Follow Chuo-dori from the station's east exit toward the city museum. The city gives a walking time of about 20 minutes; return by the same route. Exhibition rooms open at 9:00 a.m., so time your departure for either the garden alone or the exhibits too.

Nohi Bus Center → Hida Folk Village → center
Board Sarubobo at the center's boarding point 1 and get off at Hida Folk Village. The ride takes about ten minutes; follow entrance signs to the ticket office. The return timetable lists the village twice, so read the facility-departure and center-arrival rows in the same column.
