Gifu travel: should you stay in Gifu City or Takayama?

Which places should you choose first?

Explore government rooms and rice stores at Jinya, free town history and culture at the museum, or gilding and carvings on festival floats. Choose the folk village for relocated houses or Shirakawago for a lived-in village. Gifu Park and Kinkazan offer views without closed castle interiors. Hida Folk Village · 飛騨の里 Shirakawa-go · 白川郷

Itineraries by trip length

Choose your overnight city before choosing your trip length. One- and two-night routes use Takayama; three- and four-night options can start with Gifu views before transferring. Fit arrival-afternoon and final-morning visits around actual trains and buses.

1 night, 2 days

One Takayama night offers walks to Jinya and the museum, or a village bus visit followed by Jinya. Neither route adds Shirakawago, leaving time for city exhibits or folk houses.

2 nights, 3 days

Stay two nights at the same hotel. Visit Jinya first and the museum last; choose the folk village or Shirakawago in between. For Shirakawago, check Wada opening and reservations in both directions.

3 nights, 4 days

With three Takayama nights, visit the folk village and Shirakawago on separate days. To include Kinkazan, choose one Gifu night and two Takayama nights without Shirakawago. Check the Hida arrival and time for the museum on transfer day together.

4 nights, 5 days

Stay one Gifu night for the park and views, then three Takayama nights. Visit Jinya, the museum and final-day floats, with one day for Shirakawago and Wada or the folk village. Castle interiors and street festivals are excluded.

Which journeys could a pass replace?

Shirakawago bus return through 30 November 2026 costs JPY 5,600. If transferring after one Gifu night, Hida reserved-seat example JPY 5,230 was checked 8 October for 17 October. In the four-night route using both, JPY 10,830 is below the adult JPY 19,800 pass. This compares only those transport sections. Choose outside-prefecture arrival/departure too before assessing the whole trip. Each itinerary shows ordinary fares and excluded transport. From 1 December, bus return JPY 5,800 plus Hida example totals JPY 11,030.
