Jinya and town museum

Stay one Takayama night for former government rooms and rice storehouses, then town-history/culture displays. Visit Jinya and old streets first, then the town museum. In rain, shorten outdoor walks and spend more time indoors.

Day one: Takayama Station → Jinya → city streets

  1. Takayama Station → Jinya

Start from the station around noon, eat lunch, then walk about ten minutes to Jinya according to official guidance. Visit inside before Nakabashi and the streets. April–October last entry is 16:30 and closing is 17:00; November–March last entry is 16:00 and closing is 16:30. Choose arrival transport allowing interior admission.

Jinya interior admission is paid and shoes must be removed. Check your date’s last entry and temporary closures; follow walking guidance towards the old town or station afterwards.

Day two: station east side → Hida Takayama Town Museum → station

Finish with the free town museum and station return. Check that you can complete viewing and lunch before your train or bus.

  1. Takayama Station east side → Hida Takayama Town Museum

Follow Chuo-dori from the station’s east exit, about 20 minutes according to the city guide. Explore exhibition rooms in 14 former storehouses for Takayama Festival, machiya townhouses and castle-town history. Follow yesterday’s government-building visit with local life and culture.

  2. Town museum exhibition rooms → Exhibition rooms and garden

The exhibitions open 09:00–19:00 and the garden 07:00–21:00; both are free. There are no regular closing days, but check temporary notices. In rain, favour indoor displays over streets. Early garden access does not permit exhibition entry before 09:00.

  3. Hida Takayama Town Museum → Takayama Station and departure preparation

Return along Chuo-dori towards the east exit and have lunch in town. The walk takes about 20 minutes. Allow visits, meals and boarding-area access before an afternoon train or bus. Do not add a Shirakawago return today. An early-morning departure leaves no museum time.

    Town museum: station walking access

The town museum is a separate free exhibition facility from Jinya. Check the Chuo-dori walk from the east side and temporary closures. Choose a departure allowing the visit and boarding-area access.

Transport and admission: JPY 500 per adult

Included: The subtotal covers individual adult Jinya admission at JPY 500. The town museum is free.

Extra costs and conditions: One Takayama hotel night, meals, luggage storage, arrival and departure travel outside the prefecture, and extra experiences cost extra.

Based on general adult fares and selected tickets checked on 8 October 2026. This excludes accommodation/meals and is not a whole-trip budget.

Hida Folk Village and Jinya

Stay one Takayama night for separate visits inside old houses and government buildings. Visit Hida Folk Village first and Jinya the next day. Choose first-day arrival allowing daytime village viewing and both bus journeys.

Day one: Nohi Bus Centre stand 1 → Hida Folk Village → Takayama

  1. Takayama Station/Nohi Bus Centre stand 1 → Hida Folk Village stop and entrance

At the east-side bus centre, check set-ticket purchase/exchange arrangements. Take the Sarubobo bus from stand 1 and choose a return beforehand. Follow facility entrance signs from the stop to the ticket office. Walking and ticket waits are additional to the bus ride. Explore relocated houses and outdoor grounds, allowing lunch and rest. Check your date’s meal options.

  2. Hida Folk Village → Station and hotel

Return on the Sarubobo bus towards Takayama Nohi Bus Centre. Hida Folk Village appears twice in the loop timetable: match departure from the facility with centre arrival in the same column. Then check in and eat dinner in town. If arrival is too late for both bus journeys and daytime viewing, change the visiting order. Check operation with the centre and postpone if heavy rain or snow makes travel difficult. This route visits by day, without a separate evening event.

Choose the JPY 1,000 set covering return bus travel and admission, or separate purchases totalling JPY 1,120. Check the return Sarubobo stop and same-day changes.

Day two: Takayama Station → Jinya interior → station

After the village yesterday, visit Jinya on your final day. Plan the walk back together with your departure.

  1. Takayama Station → Jinya interior

After folk houses, explore Jinya’s former government rooms and rice storehouses. Walk about ten minutes from the station for a morning interior visit after opening. Remove shoes; thick socks help in winter. This indoor day follows the outdoor folk village.

  2. Jinya interior → Takayama Station and departure preparation

Return about ten minutes towards the east exit, with lunch in town. Allow time for your afternoon train/bus. Though Jinya closes at 17:00 April–October and 16:30 in winter, do not stay until closing on departure day. Check New Year/temporary closures and on-site notices in official guidance. An early-morning departure makes two full visiting days difficult.
