Stay three Takayama nights for old houses and walks through a gassho village. Visit Jinya first, then folk village and Shirakawago on separate days. Finish with the town museum before departure.

Day one: station → Jinya → old town → Takayama hotel

    Start from JR Takayama around noon, have lunch and walk about ten minutes to Jinya. Choose arrival transport allowing first-day interior entry before the deadline.

  2. Jinya → Viewing and rest

    See government rooms and rice storehouses in the afternoon, then walk via Nakabashi and the old town. Hours are 08:45–17:00 April–October, with last entry at 16:30, and 08:45–16:30 November–March, with last entry at 16:00. Follow on-site guidance where shoes must be removed.

  3. Jinya → Station and hotel

    Rest and eat dinner in town before your booked hotel. Check restaurant opening days, queues and prices individually. If arriving late, check Jinya entry and choose another visiting day, adjusting other visits and return services too.

Jinya interior admission is paid and shoes must be removed. Check your date’s last entry and temporary closures; follow walking guidance towards the old town or station afterwards.

Day two: Nohi Bus Centre → Hida Folk Village → Takayama

    Go to the east-side bus centre and take Sarubobo from stand 1. Match centre departure and village arrival in one timetable column, choosing the return too. Allow tickets and stand-finding time. For a set ticket, first check purchase/exchange at the centre counter.

  2. Hida Folk Village stop → Ticket office → relocated houses

    Follow entrance signs from the stop to the ticket office, then explore relocated houses and grounds, allowing time for lunch and rest. Walking and ticket waits are extra to the bus ride. Usual hours are 08:30–17:00, with year-round opening. Follow on-site access guidance for individual houses. Reduce outdoor viewing if rain or snow makes walking difficult.

  3. Hida Folk Village → Station and same hotel

    Take the centre-bound bus back. The loop timetable repeats the village stop; match facility departure and centre arrival in one column. To stay longer, check the next return and facility closing first. Return to the same hotel for rest and dinner in town. Evening events and extra experiences are outside daytime admission.

Choose the JPY 1,000 set covering return bus travel and admission, or separate purchases totalling JPY 1,120. Check the return Sarubobo stop and same-day changes.

Day three: Shirakawago village/Wada House → Takayama

  1. Takayama Nohi Bus Centre → Shirakawago Bus Terminal

    Take the Shirakawago bus from the east-side centre to Ogimachi’s terminal. Check reservation marks in both directions in Nohi’s timetable. Reserve both seats on reservation-only services and follow your ticket’s boarding instructions. Check tickets/stand at the centre before departure. Road delays are possible; return to the same Takayama hotel today.

  2. Shirakawago Bus Terminal → Wada House public areas

    Walk about four minutes from the terminal to Wada House; village car park/Deai Bridge starts differ. Public hours are 09:00–17:00, with irregular closures requiring date-specific checks. Visit the open first/second floors after arrival. This is a lived-in house; keep out of private areas.

  3. Wada House → Public village paths and lunch

    Yesterday’s folk village is an outdoor museum of relocated houses. Today explore a lived-in village and an open house. After Wada House, have lunch and walk public paths. Check restaurants, other houses and viewpoint shuttle fees separately. If the house is closed, public walks remain without interior access.

  4. Shirakawago Bus Terminal → Takayama bus centre → same hotel

    Return to the terminal for your bus, checking ticket and stand. Follow purchased-ticket boarding instructions. Missing a reserved service does not permit immediate boarding of another: ask the operator about service, seats and ticket-change conditions. Return to the same hotel after reaching Takayama.

Check reservation marks in both directions and reserve both seats for reservation-only services. Wada House has irregular closures; confirm opening. Do not enter private living areas.

Day four: station → town museum → station

Finish with town-history and festival displays. Return to the station after city visits, without another Shirakawago return.

    Walk about 20 minutes along Chuo-dori from the east exit. Spend the morning exploring exhibits about festivals, machiya and everyday history on your final day.

    The exhibitions open 09:00–19:00 and the garden 07:00–21:00; both are free. There are no regular closing days; check temporary notices. Earlier garden opening does not permit gallery entry before 09:00. In rain, shorten street walks and focus on displays.

  3. Town museum → Takayama Station and departure preparation

    Have lunch after viewing, then walk about 20 minutes along Chuo-dori to the station. Allow boarding-area access before an afternoon departure. For early-morning travel, omit the museum or change visit order.

The town museum is a separate free exhibition facility from Jinya. Check the Chuo-dori walk from the east side and temporary closures. Choose a departure allowing the visit and boarding-area access.

Transport and admission: Per adult: JPY 7,500 with set / JPY 7,620 separately

Included: The subtotal includes Jinya admission at JPY 500, the village admission and return bus set at JPY 1,000, two Shirakawago bus rides at JPY 2,800 each and Wada admission at JPY 400. Separate village and bus purchases add JPY 120. The town museum is free.

Extra costs and conditions: Three Takayama hotel nights, meals, luggage storage and travel outside the prefecture cost extra. Other houses, the open-air museum, viewpoint shuttle, experiences and evening events charge separately.

Shirakawago bus through 30 November 2026 costs adult JPY 2,800 one-way/5,600 return; from 1 December JPY 2,900/5,800. Add JPY 200: subtotals become JPY 7,700 with set/7,820 separately. The bus return then costs JPY 14,000 less than the pass.

For the pass comparison, this itinerary’s covered section is the JPY 5,600 Shirakawago bus return, JPY 14,200 below the pass. Takayama–Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass costs adult JPY 19,800 for five consecutive days, requiring foreign nationality and Temporary Visitor status. Carry your passport and show it if train/station staff ask. Gifu–Takayama JR and designated Takayama–Shirakawago buses are covered, subject to excluded services and reservations. Ordinary-class reserved seats are available up to six times on specified sections; collect reserved-seat tickets before boarding. Gifu Park city buses, Sarubobo, ropeway and admission are separate. Add actual arrival/departure journeys outside the prefecture before comparing total ordinary fares. Buying a pass does not secure seats.

Gifu views, then Takayama houses and Jinya

For Kinkazan views and historic Takayama buildings, stay one Gifu night then two Takayama nights. Transfer by Hida on day two for the town museum, followed by village day three and Jinya last. Choose arrival allowing museum viewing.

Day one: JR Gifu → Gifu Park/Kinkazan → Gifu Station

  1. JR Gifu Station → Gifu Park and Kinkazan

    From JR Gifu stands 12/13, take a Nagarabashi-route bus such as N43 stopping at Gifu Park/Gifu Castle. Avoid non-stopping services such as N11 or the new rapid. Choose weekday or Saturday/holiday timetable for your date. Walk about three minutes from the stop to the park, then follow ropeway signs. The stop was formerly Gifu Park History Museum-mae.

  2. Kinkazan Ropeway boarding area → Mountain-top viewpoint and Gifu Park

    Ride Kinkazan Ropeway in the morning for mountain-top views. The roughly four-minute ride excludes queues and walking above. Castle keep and museum are closed, without interior exhibits. Follow guidance at works, slopes and stairs. Toilets east of the summit station are available, but castle-side mountain toilets are closed. Descend for lunch and lower park walks. If strong winds stop service, choose the lower park only.

  3. Gifu Park/Gifu Castle stop → JR Gifu Station

    Take a JR Gifu-bound bus from Gifu Park/Gifu Castle after viewing. Return stops may differ from outward boarding; check stop maps and destinations. Match park departure and station arrival in one timetable column. Then go to your booked hotel using its actual address.

Castle/museum closure differs from ropeway operation. Planned inspection suspensions: 1–28 December 2026 and 7 January–16 February 2027. Do not choose summit views then. On other dates, check final upward/downward services and the return bus too.

Day two: Gifu → Takayama → town museum

Move hotels by Hida from Gifu to Takayama. Visit the museum after arrival, then have dinner in town. Bring your luggage on this transfer day.

    Take Hida from JR Gifu, eating lunch before boarding. In JR Central’s planner, enter your date, Gifu departure, Takayama arrival and ordinary-class reserved seats. Distinguish intermediate arrival/departure columns. The amount below is a dated example; recalculate base/express fares for your date and seats, checking actual availability and notices when buying. Choose arrival allowing the museum walk and viewing afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a tourist pass, or can I use ordinary tickets?

Ordinary tickets work. The five-consecutive-day pass covers Gifu–Takayama JR and designated Shirakawago buses, subject to excluded services/reservations. Coverage and savings require separate comparison.

Three Takayama nights with Shirakawago use bus return JPY 5,600; the Gifu-transfer route uses Hida reserved example JPY 5,230 checked 8 October for 17 October. These four-day routes differ: do not combine their fares into one trip. Listed sections cost less than adult pass JPY 19,800, but whole-trip savings depend on outside-prefecture journeys and actual fares. City buses, ropeway and admission extra; check foreign Temporary Visitor eligibility and seat collection. Bus return JPY 5,600 applies through 30 November, then JPY 5,800; difference from pass falls from JPY 14,200 to 14,000. Carry your passport and show staff when asked.

Does the pass include village buses and Kinkazan Ropeway?

Sarubobo, park buses and ropeway cost extra. Compare covered JR/designated Shirakawago journeys with ordinary fares, adding admission separately. Pass coverage does not secure seats; reserve both reservation-only buses.
