Shimojishima Airport to Hirara and Miyakojima resort hotels

Shimojishima Airport (SHI) is a different airport from Miyako Airport (MMY). First check the airport code on your ticket and the bus, pickup, or rental car pickup location.

For Hirara, take a bus to a stop near the public market or port. For southern resorts, check the actual hotel stops: a bus to Tokyu Hotel does not serve every resort. If your hotel is not on the route, confirm a taxi, pre-booked pickup or rental car before relying on it.

Shimojishima Airport SHI and Miyako Airport MMY are different

Shimojishima Airport · みやこ下地島空港 (SHI) is on Shimoji Island · 下地島. For Hirara · 平良, travel via Irabu Island · 伊良部島 and Irabu Bridge · 伊良部大橋 to Miyako Island · 宮古島.

Miyako Airport · 宮古空港 (MMY) is a different airport. Match the airport code on your flight ticket with your booked pickup or rental collection. There is no railway or monorail here; use a bus or car.

Times below are time on board. Add immigration, baggage collection, waiting and the final hotel journey. Operators and stopping patterns differ, and traffic or road restrictions can extend the ride.

Where can I catch the Shimojishima Airport bus?

  1. Complete arrivals procedures and collect bags, then leave for the arrivals hall.
  2. For Chuo Kotsu, buy at the reception desk near the international-arrivals exit before going outside. The operator announces an unmanned airport office from the 24 October 2026 transition, with tickets sold when boarding thereafter. Ask staff/the driver which arrangement applies on the transition date.
  3. For Kyoei, go directly to the public-bus stop outside the terminal, shown outside the check-in area in the official plan. Follow ‘路線バス / BUS STOP’ and check the bus destination.
  4. Show the driver your stop: Chuo Kotsu uses 平良港（マティダ市民劇場）, Hirara Port (Matida Civic Theater), while Kyoei uses マティダ市民劇場前, Matida Civic Theater-mae. The public-market stop is 公設市場前.

Chuo Kotsu payment/reservation

No reservation is needed. The operator lists cash, credit card and barcode payment. Ask separately about transport IC cards and large-bag/pushchair limits.

Kyoei Payment/Loading

Pay cash or credit card when getting off; transport IC acceptance needs separate confirmation. This is a stopping resort route, not a door-to-door transfer. Check any further fare for changing to another route, and ask about reservations, groups and large luggage.

Where can I get off in downtown Hirara and around Hirara Port?

Accommodations around the public market and Nishizato Street

Arrivals → airport bus stop → Irabu Bridge → public-market stop (‘公設市場前’) → hotel. For Nishizato Street · 西里通り hotels, compare the address with this stop.

Even on a short walk, check pavements and the hotel entrance if carrying a large suitcase.

Arrivals → airport bus stop → Irabu Bridge → stop near Hirara Port · 平良港 / Matida Civic Theater · マティダ市民劇場 → hotel. The port covers a large area; this stop is not every pier.

Hilton, Canopy and southern resorts

Hilton Okinawa Miyako Island Resort · ヒルトン沖縄宮古島リゾート and Canopy by Hilton Okinawa Miyako Island Resort · キャノピーbyヒルトン沖縄宮古島リゾート are served before entering central Hirara after crossing Irabu Bridge. Confirm your operator’s stop and the final route to the hotel entrance.

Miyakojima Tokyu Hotel & Resorts · 宮古島東急ホテル＆リゾーツ is southwest: arrivals → airport bus → Irabu Bridge → Hirara and Miyako Airport → Tokyu Hotel stop → entrance.

Check whether your bus continues to Tokyu Hotel rather than ending earlier.

Shigira · シギラ and other southern hotels are not the same destination as Tokyu’s stop. Ask your hotel about SHI pickup, advance booking and cost. An MMY-only shuttle cannot collect a passenger at SHI. Tokyu’s official access guide says its shuttle does not serve SHI.The hotel’s free MMY shuttle and this public airport bus are different services.

Last bus and flight delay at Shimojishima Airport

These departures run from the airport towards the city and hotels. It's different from returning from the city to the airport.

Until October 24, 2026

Chuo Kotsu buses towards Hirara/Miyako Airport leave at 16:50 daily, with an additional 18:00 departure on Thursdays and Sundays. Don't expect there to be buses at 18:00 on other days of the week.

Kyoei’s last Tokyu-bound airport departure is 16:50. Its table for this period explicitly excludes Jin Air arrivals; passengers on those flights should compare Chuo Kotsu’s timetable rather than assume a Kyoei connection.

From October 25, 2026

From 25 October, Chuo Kotsu lists a last airport departure at 16:55; Kyoei lists 17:00 and revised Korea-arrival connections. Match your date, flight and operating day with the relevant new table.

Kyoei says departures may be delayed with the flights identified in its timetable. However, waiting restrictions may be displayed for each flight. If a flight is cancelled, corresponding buses may also be suspended. Chuo Kotsu's waiting policy for all delayed flights has not been confirmed, so if your landing is delayed, ask the operator which bus you can take.

If buses have ended or a pickup time has passed, give the company your flight and revised arrival. Confirm whether the booking remains valid, driver waiting and extra charges under its terms. Tell the hotel you will arrive late.

Taxis and booked pickups: confirm availability and the total

Arrivals → official taxi rank → Irabu Bridge → hotel entrance. The airport says taxis wait for flight arrivals, but recommends booking if vehicles have already left. Ask about availability in advance for a late arrival or difficult luggage.

The airport’s city-centre reference is about 25 minutes and JPY 4,000, not a fixed fare. Give the hotel address and ask whether metered or a booked fixed fare applies, including surcharges, booking and dispatch fees. Confirm night-charge hours and rate for your journey.

Rental cars: confirm the SHI branch and collection cutoff

Select SHI as the collection airport. Terminal collection and an office shuttle take different amounts of time. After paperwork and vehicle handover, drive via Irabu Island and Irabu Bridge towards your hotel.

Orix lists its airport counter and daily hours of 09:00–19:00, subject to holiday/period changes. Confirm Shimojishima, not the similarly named Miyako Airport branch.

Closing time may be later than the collection cutoff. Confirm the final collection, delay policy, booking retention, return location and airport shuttle allowance with your branch. Call promptly if delayed; arrange a taxi or other confirmed hotel journey if collection is unavailable.

Shimojishima Airport transport FAQ

Are Shimojishima and Miyako airports the same?

No: SHI is Shimojishima and MMY is Miyako. From SHI to Hirara, cross Irabu Island and Irabu Bridge. Match the flight’s airport code with your bus, pickup or rental booking.

Can I take a bus to central Hirara?

Chuo Kotsu Airport Liner and Kyoei Resort Line serve the area at JPY 600 adult one-way. Compare the public-market stop for Nishizato hotels, or Chuo’s Hirara Port/Matida Civic Theater and Kyoei’s Matida Civic Theater-mae for port hotels. Add the final hotel journey.

What transport serves southern resorts?

Kyoei reaches the Tokyu Hotel stop in about 56 minutes at JPY 800 adult one-way. It does not serve every southern hotel, including Shigira. Compare your hotel’s confirmed SHI pickup with taxis or rentals; an MMY-only shuttle is different.

Where do I board the airport bus?

Use the public-bus stop outside the terminal. Chuo tickets are sold near the international-arrivals exit, with an announced unmanned-office transition on 24 October 2026 and onboard sale thereafter; ask which applies on the date. Kyoei boards directly and takes payment when getting off. Choose the drop-off by hotel address.

Will the bus or pickup wait for a delayed flight?

Kyoei may delay airport departure for flights identified in its table, subject to flight-specific restrictions; this does not cover every arrival. Give Chuo or your pickup company the flight and revised arrival, and confirm waiting and extra charges.

What if I miss the rental collection cutoff?

Contact the booked branch to ask about same-day collection or holding the booking until the next day. Do not assume collection after closing. If unavailable, arrange an official taxi and tell the hotel your revised arrival.

What should I confirm before taking a taxi?

Use the official rank or listed company, giving the hotel address, passengers and bag count. The airport’s about-25-minute/JPY-4,000 city reference is not a fixed price. Confirm metered/fixed fare, surcharges, booking/dispatch fees, payment and availability.
