SHI → Hirara and Miyakojima hotels
Shimojishima Airport to Hirara and Miyakojima
For a hotel in Hirara, compare the public-market or port-area bus stops. For a southern resort, check the actual hotel stop: the bus serves Tokyu Hotel, not every Shigira-area property. If it does not reach your hotel, compare a confirmed SHI pickup, taxi or rental car.
Check your flight’s airport code first. Shimojishima Airport (SHI) and Miyako Airport (MMY) are different airports, with different bus and rental pickup points.
Official sources checked: · Times are JST · Fares are in Japanese yen for one adult, one way unless noted.
SHI and MMY are not interchangeable
Shimojishima Airport · みやこ下地島空港 (SHI) is on Shimojishima. A trip to Hirara · 平良 crosses Irabu Island · 伊良部島 and Irabu Bridge · 伊良部大橋 to Miyako Island · 宮古島.
Miyako Airport · 宮古空港 (MMY) is a separate airport on Miyako Island. Match SHI or MMY on your flight booking to the bus, hotel shuttle and rental office. There is no railway or monorail; travel is by bus or vehicle.

SHI is the departure airport, MMY is the separate Miyako Airport. The dotted lines represent travel sequences and are not actual road routes or walking paths. The small blue dots are reference locations, and the number buttons are spaced slightly apart to avoid overlapping. Please check the official layout map for bus stopping directions and boarding areas.
Pins and dotted connections are approximate, not precise boarding bays or actual road geometry. Use the current schedules below rather than older fares or times in the operator-linked map. Kyoei’s linked stop map ↗

These are times after boarding. Immigration, baggage claim, the boarding wait and the final hotel walk are separate. Operators use different stop sequences; traffic and road restrictions can add time.

About 25 minutes to downtown
Airport information reference price: approximately 4,000 yen
This estimate varies depending on destination and traffic conditions. Check with the company about reservation fees, surcharges, baggage loading, and payment methods. On-site dispatch is not guaranteed.
Official fare and timetable ↗From arrivals to the bus
- Complete immigration and baggage claim, then enter the arrivals hall.
- For Chuo Kotsu, the checked guidance directs passengers to buy at the reception desk near international arrivals, then use the route-bus stop outside. The operator announced an unstaffed airport office from October 24, 2026, with onboard ticket sales afterward. Around the transition, ask staff or the driver where to pay.
- For Kyoei, go directly to the route-bus stop outside the terminal’s check-in area. Follow “路線バス / BUS STOP” and check the destination.
- Confirm your stop with the driver. Chuo’s port-area label is 平良港(マティダ市民劇場); Kyoei uses マティダ市民劇場. The public-market stop is 公設市場前.
Chuo Kotsu: tickets and bags
The Airport Liner does not require a reservation. The operator lists cash, credit cards and barcode payments. Transportation IC-card acceptance and large-bag/stroller loading need confirmation with the operator.
Chuo Kotsu Miyako: 0980-79-5540Kyoei: payment and loading
Pay cash or credit card when exiting. Ask separately about transportation IC cards, reservations, groups and large luggage. A transfer to another regular bus can require another fare.
Kyoei Bus: 0980-72-2414Where to leave the bus in Hirara
Public market and Nishizato Street
Arrivals → airport bus stop → Irabu Bridge → public-market stop → hotel. Compare a hotel near Nishizato Street · 西里通り with the actual 公設市場前 stop. Even a short walk needs a usable sidewalk and the correct entrance when carrying bags.
Public market → Nishizato Street walk ↗Hirara Port and Matida Civic Theater
Arrivals → airport bus → Irabu Bridge → port-area stop by Matida Civic Theater · マティダ市民劇場 → hotel. Hirara Port · 平良港 is large; the bus stop is not every pier. For an onward boat, check its boarding terminal and departure time separately.
Matida Civic Theater → Hirara Port walk ↗Hilton-area hotels and southern resorts
Hilton Okinawa Miyako Island Resort · ヒルトン沖縄宮古島リゾート and Canopy by Hilton Okinawa Miyako Island Resort · キャノピーbyヒルトン沖縄宮古島リゾート are reached after crossing Irabu Bridge, before the city center. Check the operator’s stop and the final hotel entrance walk.
Miyakojima Tokyu Hotel & Resorts · 宮古島東急ホテル&リゾーツ is to the southwest. Its route is airport → Irabu Bridge → Hirara → Miyako Airport → Tokyu Hotel stop → hotel. A bus terminating in the city is not the same service.
Shigira · シギラ and other southern hotels are not automatically served by this stop. Ask your hotel whether it offers an SHI pickup, with any reservation or fee requirement. An MMY-only shuttle does not serve SHI. Tokyu’s official guide states it does not provide its own SHI shuttle; distinguish its MMY guest shuttle from the regular SHI bus.
Tokyu’s airport access conditions ↗ · Tokyu stop → hotel entrance ↗Airport-origin last buses and flight delays
These departures run from SHI toward the city and hotels, not back to the airport.
Through October 24, 2026
Chuo Kotsu has a 16:50 departure toward Hirara/Miyako Airport daily and an 18:00 departure on Thursdays and Sundays only. Do not assume 18:00 is available on other days.
Kyoei’s final airport departure for Tokyu Hotel is 16:50. Its timetable explicitly says it does not connect with Jin Air arrivals during this period; passengers on those flights should compare Chuo’s schedule. That is an operator-listed flight condition, not a new U.S. route.
Current Kyoei timetable ↗From October 25, 2026
Chuo’s winter timetable lists a final 16:55 airport departure. Kyoei’s new table lists 17:00 and guidance for Korean arriving flights. Confirm your date, flight and operating day rather than applying the old table.
Winter Kyoei timetable ↗Kyoei says the bus can depart later when its specifically matched arriving flight is delayed, with flight-specific waiting limits. A canceled matched flight may also cancel its bus. This is not a guarantee to wait for every arriving flight. Chuo’s blanket waiting policy is unconfirmed; ask which bus you can actually catch.
For a missed bus or pickup, notify the operator of your flight number and revised time. Check booking retention, driver waiting and extra charges under your own reservation, and tell your hotel about late arrival.
Official taxis and reserved pickups
Arrivals → official taxi stand → Irabu Bridge → hotel. The airport says taxis await flights but recommends a reservation if available vehicles have left. Confirm dispatch in advance for a late arrival or large bags.
The airport’s roughly 25 minutes and 4,000 yen to central Hirara are reference estimates, not a flat fare. Give the actual address and ask about metered versus booked pricing, night surcharges, reservation/pickup charges and payment.
Official stand and company contacts ↗Rental pickup: match SHI, office hours and the handover deadline
Choose an SHI office, not an MMY branch. An on-site counter and an off-site shuttle have different pickup times. After handover, the drive to Hirara crosses Irabu Island and Irabu Bridge.
OTS Shimojishima Airport
The office is on the terminal site, on the first floor near domestic arrivals. International passengers should check the actual meeting point in the OTS counter guide (Korean) ↗. Through October 24, hours are 08:00–18:00, extended to 18:30 Thursdays and Sundays. From October 25, hours are 08:00–18:00.
OTS: 0980-78-6625 · Office and handover instructions ↗Orix Shimojishima Airport Terminal
Orix lists an airport counter with daily hours 09:00–19:00, subject to holiday or seasonal changes. Do not confuse it with its Miyako Airport office.
Orix: 0980-74-5088 · Branch and hours ↗Shimoji Rent-a-Car: off-site shuttle
The office is about five minutes by car from SHI, with free round-trip transfers and hours 08:30–19:00. Contact the office for changes or cancellation. Confirm both the pickup meeting point and the airport return transfer.
Shimoji Rent-a-Car: 0980-79-9554 · Official booking and shuttle conditions ↗Closing time is not necessarily the last handover time. Check the pickup deadline, delay rules, holding a booking, return location and airport shuttle time with your own company. Contact it before closing if delayed; prepare a taxi alternative if collection is unavailable.
Bring original Japan-valid driving documents and check the actual rental’s insurance, excess, non-operation charge (NOC), towing coverage and exclusions. Insurance does not remove every possible charge. The OTS document guide (Korean) ↗ is a source reference, not proof that every passport or license qualifies.
Typhoons, strong winds and bridge restrictions
Check the Japan Meteorological Agency, airport/airline notices and bus updates separately. Strong wind alone does not establish a canceled flight or a closed Irabu Bridge. Use the road authority’s actual restriction and reopening notice.

These are official operator links, not affiliate offers. For a bus, confirm boarding payment; for a rental, match SHI, the date and handover office. A guest pickup and a self-drive rental are different services.
Shimojishima Airport transfer FAQs
Are Shimojishima Airport and Miyako Airport the same?
No. Shimojishima is SHI and Miyako is MMY. From SHI, the Hirara trip crosses Irabu Island and Irabu Bridge. Match your flight’s airport code to the bus, pickup and rental office.
Can I take a bus to central Hirara?
Chuo Kotsu Airport Liner and Kyoei Resort Line serve Hirara. For city hotels, compare the public-market stop; for port-area hotels, compare Chuo’s Hirara Port/Matida Civic Theater stop or Kyoei’s Matida Civic Theater stop. Both list 600 yen one way for adults on this segment, plus the onward hotel walk.
What should I use for a southern resort?
Kyoei serves the Miyakojima Tokyu Hotel stop in about 56 minutes for 800 yen one way. It does not serve every southern or Shigira-area hotel. Compare your actual stop with a hotel SHI pickup, taxi or rental car.
Where do I board and pay for the airport bus?
Use the route-bus stop outside the terminal. Chuo’s checked guide uses the desk near international arrivals, but its notice moves to an unstaffed airport office from October 24, 2026 with onboard sales afterward. Check staff instructions around that transition. Kyoei passengers go to the stop and pay on exiting. Match your hotel to the actual drop-off stop.
Does the bus wait if my flight is delayed?
Kyoei may delay a bus linked to the specifically matched flight in its timetable, subject to flight-specific limits; this is not a guarantee for every arrival. For Chuo or a booked pickup, give the operator your flight and revised time and confirm waiting and extra charges.
What if I arrive after my rental pickup deadline?
Contact the booked branch before closing and ask whether same-day collection or holding the booking until tomorrow is possible. Do not assume collection after hours. If unavailable, confirm a taxi and tell your hotel about the delay.
What should I confirm before taking a taxi?
Use the official taxi stand or an airport-listed company and provide the hotel address, passenger count and bags. The airport’s roughly 25 minutes and 4,000 yen to the city are reference estimates, not a flat fare. Confirm pricing, surcharges, booking/pickup charges, payment and actual vehicle availability.
