What to see at Mt. Hakodate Ropeway
See the city and the sea from the summit
Look down over Hakodate with the sea stretching along both sides. Consider a daytime visit for the cityscape or an evening visit for illuminated streets.
How to get to Mt. Hakodate Ropeway
From Hakodate Station, take tram route 2 toward Yachigashira or route 5 toward Hakodate-Dock-mae and get off at Jujigai. Walk uphill for about 10 minutes to the lower ropeway station. Buy a ticket at the first-floor machines, then go to the third-floor boarding lobby.
Visit tips
Closed October 20–November 8, 2026
The ropeway closes for maintenance during this period. The summit observation facility itself is listed as open 10:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m.; a ropeway suspension does not mean the entire mountain is off-limits. However, the Hokkaido guide's two- and three-day Hakodate itineraries and five-day Sapporo–Hakodate itinerary do not include alternative summit transportation. Omit the ropeway and summit visit from these plans during the closure.
The lower station involves an uphill walk
From Jujigai tram stop, it is about a 10-minute uphill walk to the lower ropeway station. Allow time to walk slowly or take breaks. If the hill is difficult, separately check buses to the lower station or taxis available on your date.

Questions about Mt. Hakodate Ropeway
Can I ride the ropeway when it is cloudy or windy?
Strong winds or bad weather may affect service, and clouds can block the view. Check same-day service and visibility before visiting. If you plan to reach the summit another way during a ropeway closure, check date-specific transportation and road restrictions separately.
