Temples, gardens or museums: where should you spend time?

Choose Nippon Maru for harbour scenery and the ship's interior, or Sankeien for historic buildings and garden paths. Visit Kamakura's Hase area for temples and the Great Buddha, or Enoshima for elevated sea views. For outdoor sculptures, travel further from Yumoto by mountain railway to Hakone's museum. Sankeien Garden三溪園

Explore historic buildings and Japanese garden paths at Sankeien. It requires a bus journey rather than a direct walk from Yokohama's harbour waterfront. Give the garden a separate half-day from the harbour walk for more time inside.

Kotoku-in and the Kamakura Great Buddha

Kotoku-in高徳院

See the Kamakura Great Buddha up close at Kotoku-in. Grounds admission and the statue's interior have separate fees. Combine nearby Hasedera with it over a half-day if visiting both temples.

  • AdmissionStandard admission costs JPY 300, or JPY 150 for ages 6–12. The Great Buddha interior costs an extra JPY 50.
  • HoursThe grounds open from 8 am to 5.30 pm from April to September and from 8 am to 5 pm from October to March. Last admission is 15 minutes before closing. The statue interior opens from 8 am to 4.30 pm, with last admission 10 minutes before closing. Ordinary visits need no booking.
  • DirectionsFrom Kamakura, take Enoden towards Fujisawa to Hase, then walk about seven minutes. The official Kotoku-in-to-Hasedera walk is about five minutes.

Add garden walks and sea views to worship at Hasedera's Kannon Hall. There are stairs in the grounds, so leave time for rests on a day combining it with the Great Buddha.

See the sea and nearby mountain ranges from Enoshima Sea Candle's elevated deck. Stairs and slopes continue towards the hilltop after reaching the island. Plan for tower admission and the time needed to walk around the island.

  • AdmissionTower admission is JPY 800 for adults and JPY 400 for primary school students. Samuel Cocking Garden is free by day, 9 am–5 pm. On event days, leaving after 5 pm adds garden admission of JPY 500 for adults and JPY 250 for children. All Escar sections cost JPY 500 for adults. The adult daytime combined ticket for the tower and Escar is JPY 1,100 at the first Escar boarding point. Do not add separate JPY 800 + JPY 500 tickets on top of that combined price.
  • HoursStandard official hours are 9 am–8 pm, with last admission at 7.30 pm. Facilities and events may vary.
  • DirectionsOfficial estimates are about 25 minutes from Enoden Enoshima or 20 minutes from Odakyu Katase-Enoshima, using Escar. Even with Escar, you still need to walk down.
  • From Enoshima Station to the hilltopCross Enoshima Benten Bridge to Benzaiten Nakamise Street. Ride all three paid Escar sections left of the shrine's red torii to reach Samuel Cocking Garden's entrance on the right. The tower is inside the garden. Meals, waits, tower visits and walking down take extra time beyond the approach estimate. This plan uses the daytime combined ticket and leaves the garden before 5 pm on event days.

Walk an outdoor sculpture garden amid mountain scenery, then continue to indoor exhibits at the Hakone Open-Air Museum. Bring an umbrella or raincoat if planning outdoor visits in rain.
