Where should I stay in Gifu Prefecture: Gifu City or Takayama?

Base yourself near Takayama Station for Jinya, the old town, Hida Folk Village or a day trip to Shirakawa-go. If Gifu Park and Mount Kinka views are your priority, you can start in Gifu City. The cities require a separate train journey, so decide first whether to move your accommodation.

Which places should I choose first?

At Jinya, explore former government rooms and the rice storehouse. The free town museum introduces Takayama's history and culture, while the float hall showcases elaborate festival float decoration and carving. Choose Hida Folk Village for a close look at historic houses, or Shirakawa-go for a walk through an inhabited gassho village. Gifu Park and Mount Kinka offer hilltop views in Gifu City, but this is not an itinerary for visiting the closed Gifu Castle interior. Hida Folk Village · 飛騨の里 / Shirakawa-go · 白川郷

Itineraries by trip length

Choose the city to stay in before your trip length. Use Takayama as your base for one or two nights. For three or four nights, you can also start with Gifu City's hilltop views before moving to Takayama. Check your actual trains or buses to see whether arrival-afternoon and last-morning visits fit.

2 days, 1 night

Spend one night in Takayama with either Jinya and the town museum, or a bus trip to Hida Folk Village followed by Jinya. Neither option includes a round trip to Shirakawa-go, leaving your short stay for town visits or historic house exhibits.

3 days, 2 nights

Stay two nights at the same Takayama accommodation. Visit Jinya and the town museum on your first and last days, choosing either Hida Folk Village or Shirakawa-go for the middle day. For Shirakawa-go, check Wada House opening and reservation requirements for both bus journeys.

4 days, 3 nights

Three nights in Takayama let you visit Hida Folk Village and Shirakawa-go on different days. For Mount Kinka views too, choose one night in Gifu City followed by two in Takayama. That option excludes a round trip to Shirakawa-go; check the Limited Express Hida and museum visiting time on the day you change cities.

5 days, 4 nights

Spend one night in Gifu City for the park and hilltop views, then three in Takayama. Visit Jinya and the town museum, finish with the float hall, and use the remaining day for either Shirakawa-go and Wada House or Hida Folk Village. Gifu Castle's interior and attendance at the street festival are not included.

Before choosing transport

Which transport can I cover with a pass?

Through 30 November 2026, the return Shirakawa-go bus fare is JPY 5,600. If spending a night in Gifu City before moving to Takayama, the Hida reserved-seat reference quote is JPY 5,230 for 17 October, checked on 8 October. The four-night itinerary using both segments totals JPY 10,830 for these journeys, less than the JPY 19,800 adult Takayama–Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass. This compares only those transport segments of the four-night itinerary. Decide your journeys into and out of the prefecture before judging which option costs less for the full trip. See each trip-length itinerary for ordinary-ticket costs and transport excluded from the pass. From 1 December, the return Shirakawa-go fare is JPY 5,800, or JPY 11,030 together with the Hida reference quote.

While walking through Takayama, consider Hida beef dishes or hoba miso for a meal. Hoba miso is miso and other ingredients grilled on a magnolia leaf. On your Gifu Park day, choose a restaurant in Gifu City. Takayama restaurants are not near Gifu Park. Check the city you are visiting and each restaurant's opening days, menu and reservation conditions. Meals are separate from transport and admission costs.

Which places work together on each day?

Separate your days into walking in central Takayama, taking a bus to historic houses or the gassho village, and seeing hilltop views in Gifu City. These groupings suggest a visit order; adjust them for facility closures and return transport.

Central Takayama: Jinya and the old town

On your arrival afternoon, explore Jinya's former government rooms and rice storehouse, then walk around Nakabashi Bridge and the old town. The next day, visit the town museum's historic storehouse galleries to learn about Takayama's history and culture. Jinya and the museum are different facilities, so fit each visit around its own entry hours.

Hida Folk Village: a day among relocated houses

Hida Folk Village is an outdoor museum of houses relocated from elsewhere. Take a Sarubobo bus from Takayama Nohi Bus Centre. In rain, reduce outdoor walking while allowing for walks within the facility and your return bus. This visit differs from the inhabited village of Shirakawa-go.

Shirakawa-go: village walks and Wada House

Keep a separate day for the bus trip from Takayama to Shirakawa-go. Choose Wada House if you would like to see inside a gassho house as well as walking the village. Keep out of residents' living spaces and areas closed to visitors. First check reservation requirements for both bus journeys and whether Wada House opens on your date.
