Five days in Gifu Prefecture: Shirakawa-go or Hida Folk Village?
See Gifu City's hilltop views on day one, stay a night, then move to Takayama for three nights. Choose Shirakawa-go for an inhabited gassho village and Wada House, or Hida Folk Village for historic house exhibits with less intercity bus travel. See festival floats at the exhibition hall on your last day. This visit is separate from the dates when the festival takes place in the streets.
Choose a 5 days, 4 nights itinerary
Gifu views, Takayama Jinya, Shirakawa-go and festival floats
For hilltop views and a trip to the gassho village, spend one night in Gifu City and three in Takayama. After Gifu Park and Mount Kinka, move to Takayama for the town museum, Jinya, Shirakawa-go and Wada House, then the Festival Floats Exhibition Hall on your last day. Check whether your buses in both directions to Shirakawa-go require reservations and whether Wada House is open.

- JR Gifu Station → Gifu Park and Mount Kinka
From bays 12 or 13 at JR Gifu Station, take a bus via Nagarabashi that stops at Gifu Park/Gifu Castle, such as N43. Avoid services that skip this stop, including N11 and the new rapid service. Weekday and weekend/public holiday timetables differ, so use the one for your date. The park is about a three-minute walk from the stop. Follow the signs to the ropeway boarding station. The bus stop was previously called Gifu Park Historical Museum.

The toilets east of the summit station are available, but the hilltop toilets near the castle are closed. After your visit, take the ropeway down, have lunch and walk through the park below. If strong winds or other conditions stop the ropeway, switch to a visit to the park at the foot of the hill.

Frequently asked questions
Can I fit a day trip to Gero into five days?
Replace your Shirakawa-go or Hida Folk Village day with Gero sightseeing. Take a bus from Nohi Bus Centre to the stop in front of Gero Station, walk about eight minutes to the Onsen Museum, then return to the same accommodation in Takayama. First check return services for your date and museum closing days. The museum closes on Thursdays, or the next day if Thursday is a public holiday, and on 30 and 31 December. Ask the facility whether it opens on 29 December.
Standard adult return bus fare and museum admission total JPY 2,520, excluded from the itinerary subtotal above. Meals, bathing and accommodation cost extra, and this local bus is not covered by the tourist pass. Give Shirakawa-go its own day if you also want to visit it. For bathing or a night in Gero, check the conditions of your chosen facility and accommodation separately.

Will a visit to the float hall also let me see the street festival?
The hall lets you examine gilded decoration and carving on autumn festival floats indoors. A last-day hall visit does not mean the street festival takes place that day. Floats rotate; hours are 09:00–17:00 in March–November and 09:00–16:30 in December–February. Choose your departure with time for the roughly 20-minute walk from the station, your visit and the return walk.
