Jinya and the town museum

Spend one night in Takayama to see former government-office rooms and a rice storehouse, then town history and culture exhibits. Visit Jinya and historic streets on day 1 and the town museum the next day. Shorten outdoor walks and spend more time inside if it rains.

Day 1: Takayama Station → Jinya → city streets

  1. Takayama Station → Jinya

Leave Takayama Station around noon, have lunch and walk to Jinya. The official station walk is about 10 minutes. Visit the interior first, then Nakabashi and nearby streets. April–October last entry is 16:30, closing 17:00; November–March last entry is 16:00, closing 16:30. Choose arrival transport that leaves time inside on day 1.

Pay admission and remove shoes for Jinya’s interior. Check last entry and temporary closures for your date, then follow walking guidance towards historic streets or the station afterwards.

Day 2: east side of Takayama Station → town museum → station

Visit the free town museum on your final day, then return to the station. Check you can board your train or bus after sightseeing and lunch.

  1. Takayama Station east side → Hida Takayama Town Museum

Follow Chuo-dori from Takayama Station’s east exit to the museum. The city’s official estimate is about 20 minutes on foot. Explore 14 historic storehouse galleries in the morning, covering Takayama Festival, machiya houses and castle-town history. After yesterday’s visit to Jinya’s former offices, explore town life and culture today.

  2. Town museum galleries → Galleries and garden visit

Galleries open 09:00–19:00 and gardens 07:00–21:00, with free admission. There are no regular closures, but check temporary notices. Focus on galleries and shorten street walks in rain. Arriving during earlier garden hours does not allow exhibition access before 09:00.

  3. Hida Takayama Town Museum → Takayama Station and departure preparation

Return along Chuo-dori towards the station’s east exit, having lunch in town. The museum-to-station walk takes about 20 minutes. Allow separate sightseeing, meal and platform-access time before an afternoon train or bus. Do not add a Shirakawa-go return trip today. An early-morning departure leaves no museum time.

Walking from the station to the town museum

The museum is a separate free exhibition facility from Jinya. Check the Chuo-dori route from the station’s east side and temporary closures. Choose a departure allowing time to reach its boarding point after sightseeing.

Transport and admission: JPY 500 per adult

Included: Individual adult Jinya admission JPY 500. The town museum is free.

Separate costs and conditions: One Takayama night, meals, luggage storage, arrival/departure transport beyond the prefecture and separate experiences.

Based on standard adult rates and chosen ticket types checked 8 October 2026. This is not a full trip budget including accommodation and meals.

Hida Folk Village and Jinya

Day 1: Nohi Bus Center stop 1 → Hida Folk Village → Takayama

  1. Takayama Station and Nohi Bus Center stop 1 → Hida-no-Sato stop and facility access

Check sales and exchange procedures for the Hida Folk Village package at Nohi Bus Center east of the station. Take Sarubobo Bus from stop 1 and get off at Hida-no-Sato. Choose your return before leaving. Follow entrance signs to the ticket office; walking and queues are additional to bus riding time. 2. Hida Folk Village → Station and accommodation transfer

Return on Sarubobo Bus towards Takayama Nohi Bus Center. Hida-no-Sato appears twice in the loop timetable; read the village-departure and centre-arrival rows in the same column. Check in after reaching the centre and eat dinner in town. Rearrange visits if late arrival prevents a daytime visit and return journey. Ask the centre about operation and consider postponing in heavy rain or snow. This is a daytime village visit, excluding separate night events.

Can I see the town museum if leaving early on day two?

Exhibits open at 09:00. Allow about 20 minutes to walk there from the station and another 20 minutes back after visiting. This itinerary visits the museum on the second morning before an afternoon departure. If leaving early, omit the last-day museum visit or change the visit day. The gardens' 07:00 opening does not give early access to the exhibits.
