Four days in Gifu Prefecture: stay in Takayama or start in Gifu City?
For both historic houses and the gassho village, spend three nights in Takayama and visit Hida Folk Village and Shirakawa-go on different days. For hilltop views too, spend one night in Gifu City, then take the Limited Express Hida to Takayama for two nights. Choose a train that leaves time to see the town museum after arrival.

Day 1: Takayama Station → Jinya → historic streets → accommodation
- Takayama Station → Jinya
Leave JR Takayama Station around noon, have lunch and walk about 10 minutes to Jinya. Choose arrival transport to match last admission and leave time inside on day 1.
- Jinya → Visit and rest
Explore former government-office rooms and rice stores in the afternoon, then walk towards Nakabashi and historic streets. April–October hours are 08:45–17:00, last entry 16:30; November–March 08:45–16:30, last entry 16:00. Follow on-site shoe-removal guidance.

- Jinya → Station and accommodation transfer
Rest and eat dinner in the city before going to booked accommodation. Check individual restaurant opening days, waits and prices. For late arrival, recheck Jinya’s deadline and choose another visit day, adjusting other sightseeing and return services.
Pay admission and remove shoes for Jinya’s interior. Check last entry and temporary closures for your date, then follow walking guidance towards historic streets or the station afterwards.
Day 2: Nohi Bus Center → Hida Folk Village → Takayama
- Nohi Bus Center → Hida Folk Village
Go to Nohi Bus Center east of the station, take Sarubobo Bus from stop 1 and get off at Hida-no-Sato. Read centre-departure and village-arrival rows in the same timetable column and choose your return before leaving. Allow ticket purchase and boarding-point checks. For the package, ask the counter about purchase and exchange first.

- Hida-no-Sato stop → Ticket office → relocated-house exhibits
Follow entrance signs from Hida-no-Sato stop to the ticket office. Explore relocated houses and outdoor areas with lunch and rest breaks. Walking and queues are additional to riding time. Day 3 · Shirakawa-go village and Wada House → Takayama
- Takayama Nohi Bus Center → Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal
Take a Shirakawa-go-bound bus from Nohi Bus Center east of the station to the terminal in Ogimachi. Check reservation symbols separately for outward and return services. Road conditions can delay buses; plan to return to the same Takayama accommodation today.
- Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal → Publicly accessible Wada House rooms
Walk about 4 minutes from the bus terminal to Wada House. Walks from village parking or Deai Bridge differ. The house opens 09:00–17:00 but has irregular closures; check your date first. Explore the open first and second floors after arrival. Residents live here; do not enter private areas.

- Wada House → Public village paths and lunch
Hida Folk Village, visited the day before, is an outdoor museum of relocated houses. Today, explore a village where people still live and a house open to visitors. After Wada House, have lunch in the village and walk the public paths. Check restaurant opening days and the separate fees for other houses and the viewpoint shuttle. If Wada House is closed, you can walk the public paths, but cannot visit its interior.

Return to the Shirakawa-go terminal for your bus, checking tickets and boarding point. Follow your purchased ticket’s instructions. Missing a reserved bus does not mean immediate boarding on another; ask about next services, seats and ticket changes. Return to the same accommodation after reaching Takayama Nohi Bus Center.
Check reservation symbols for both bus directions and reserve both where required. Wada House closes irregularly; confirm public access for your date. Do not enter private living spaces.
Day 4 · Takayama Station → town museum → station
On your last day, see Takayama's history and festival exhibits at the town museum. Visit within town and return to the station, without another round trip to Shirakawa-go.
- Takayama Station → Town museum
Walk about 20 minutes along Chuo-dori from the station’s east exit to the museum. Explore festival, machiya and local-life exhibits in the morning on your final day.

- Town museum galleries → Galleries and garden visit
Galleries open 09:00–19:00 and gardens 07:00–21:00, free. No regular closures are listed; check temporary notices before visiting. Earlier garden opening does not allow gallery entry before 09:00. Focus on indoor exhibits and shorten street walks in rain.

- Town museum → Takayama Station and departure preparation
Have lunch in town, then walk about 20 minutes back along Chuo-dori. Choose an afternoon departure with time to reach the boarding point. Skip the final-day museum or rearrange visits for an early-morning departure.
The museum is a separate free exhibition facility from Jinya. Check the Chuo-dori route from the station’s east side and temporary closures. Choose a departure allowing time to reach its boarding point after sightseeing.
Included: Jinya admission JPY 500 + Hida Folk Village admission and return bus package JPY 1,000 + Shirakawa-go bus JPY 2,800 × 2 + Wada House admission JPY 400. Separate Hida Folk Village admission and bus tickets add JPY 120. The town museum is free.
Separate costs and conditions: Three nights in Takayama, meals, luggage storage and transport into and out of the prefecture. Other houses, the open-air museum, viewpoint shuttle, activities and evening events cost extra.
Through 30 November 2026, the Shirakawa-go bus costs JPY 2,800 one way or JPY 5,600 return per adult. For travel from 1 December, the fare becomes JPY 2,900 one way or JPY 5,800 return. Add JPY 200 to the subtotal shown. From 1 December, the subtotal is JPY 7,700 with the package ticket or JPY 7,820 with separate purchases; the return bus fare is JPY 14,000 less than the pass.
These standard adult fares and selected ticket types were checked on 8 October 2026. Check Wada House opening and seats in both directions to Shirakawa-go for your visit date. Choose either the Hida Folk Village package or separate admission and bus tickets. Check package sales and ticket exchange conditions for your date. These subtotals do not cover your full trip, including accommodation and meals.
For this itinerary, the segment to compare with the pass is the JPY 5,600 return Shirakawa-go bus trip. If this is the only covered segment you use, ordinary bus tickets cost JPY 14,200 less than the pass. The Takayama–Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass costs JPY 19,800 per adult for five consecutive days and requires a foreign passport and Temporary Visitor status. Carry your passport and show it when train or station staff ask. The pass covers JR travel from Gifu to Takayama and designated Takayama–Shirakawa-go buses, but check excluded bus services and reservations separately. Up to six ordinary-class reserved-seat journeys are available on specified sections; obtain a reserved-seat ticket before boarding. Gifu Park city buses, Sarubobo buses, the ropeway and attraction admission cost extra. Once you have decided your transport into and out of the prefecture, compare the full ordinary-ticket total. Buying a pass does not secure a seat.

Day 1 · JR Gifu Station → Gifu Park and Mount Kinka → Gifu Station
- JR Gifu Station → Gifu Park and Mount Kinka
From bays 12 or 13 at JR Gifu Station, take a bus via Nagarabashi that stops at Gifu Park/Gifu Castle, such as N43. Avoid services that skip this stop, including N11 and the new rapid service. Weekday and weekend/public holiday timetables differ, so use the one for your date. The park is about a three-minute walk from the stop. Follow the signs to the ropeway boarding station. The bus stop was previously called Gifu Park Historical Museum.

- Mount Kinka Ropeway boarding station → Hilltop viewpoints and Gifu Park
In the morning, take the Mount Kinka Ropeway to the hilltop viewpoints. The ride takes about four minutes; allow extra time for queues and walking at the top. Gifu Castle's keep and museum are closed, so you cannot see their indoor exhibits. Follow on-site guidance around construction, slopes and stairs. The toilets east of the summit station are available, but the hilltop toilets near the castle are closed. After your visit, take the ropeway down, have lunch and walk through the park below. If strong winds or other conditions stop the ropeway, switch to a visit to the park at the foot of the hill.

The closure of Gifu Castle's keep and museum is separate from ropeway operations. Ropeway maintenance closures are scheduled for 1–28 December 2026 and 7 January–16 February 2027. Do not choose the hilltop visit during these periods. On other dates, check the last uphill and downhill rides and your return bus to Gifu Station.
Day 2 · Gifu → Takayama → town museum
Take the Limited Express Hida from Gifu and move your accommodation to Takayama. Visit the town museum after arrival and have dinner in town. Bring your luggage with you when changing your base.
- Gifu → Takayama
Take the Limited Express Hida from JR Gifu Station to Takayama today. Have lunch before boarding. In JR Central's official search, enter your date, Gifu departure, Takayama arrival and an ordinary-class reserved seat. Check the Gifu departure and Takayama arrival for an operating Hida service. Do not confuse arrival and departure columns at intermediate stations. The reserved-seat amount in the transport and admission section is a reference quote for a specific date. Recalculate the base fare and limited express supplement for your date and seat type, and check actual seat availability and service notices when buying. Choose an arrival that leaves time to walk from the station to the museum and see its exhibits.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need the Takayama–Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass, or can I use ordinary tickets?
You can use ordinary tickets. For five consecutive days, the pass covers JR travel from Gifu to Takayama and designated buses between Takayama Nohi Bus Centre and Shirakawa-go, but check excluded bus services and reservation conditions. Check coverage separately from whether buying the pass costs less.
With three nights in Takayama and a trip to Shirakawa-go, the return bus fare is JPY 5,600. If moving from Gifu to Takayama, the ordinary-class reserved-seat Hida reference quote is JPY 5,230 for 17 October, checked on 8 October. These two itineraries visit different cities, so do not combine those amounts into one trip cost. For only the specified segments, ordinary tickets cost less than the JPY 19,800 adult pass. You cannot decide which costs less for the full trip until you include transport into and out of the prefecture and fares for your date. City buses, the ropeway and attraction admission cost extra. Also check the foreign-passport Temporary Visitor requirement and reserved-seat ticket conditions. The JPY 5,600 Shirakawa-go return fare applies through 30 November and becomes JPY 5,800 from 1 December. Its difference from the pass price narrows from JPY 14,200 to JPY 14,000. Carry your passport when using the pass and show it when train or station staff ask.

Does the tourist pass cover the Hida Folk Village bus and Mount Kinka Ropeway?
Pay separately for the Sarubobo bus to Hida Folk Village, Gifu Park city buses and Mount Kinka Ropeway. Compare ordinary tickets with the pass for covered JR journeys and designated Shirakawa-go buses, then add attraction admission separately. Pass coverage does not secure seats in both directions; reserve each bus that requires a reservation.
