Southern Hyogo: where should you stay and how should you divide your days?
Spend your harbour and waterfront day in Kobe, and your castle keep and Koko-en garden day in Himeji. Choose Arima for a hot-spring bath or an overnight stay in the spa town.
For two days and one night, you can focus on central Kobe. To see both Kobe’s harbour and Himeji Castle, stay in Sannomiya and allow a full day for Himeji. Arima is within Kobe city but requires a separate trip from the harbour; visit on a different day.
Harbour views, hilltop gardens, castle or hot springs?
Choose Port Tower for harbour views from above, or Meriken Park and Harborland for waterfront walks. Visit Nunobiki Herb Gardens for a ropeway ride and hilltop gardens. For castle interiors and Japanese gardens, pair Himeji Castle with Koko-en. In Arima, bathe at Kin no Yu and return, or spend a night in the spa town.
Itineraries by trip length
For a short stay, start with Kobe’s harbour or herb gardens. With more days, compare separate day trips to Himeji and Arima with overnight stays there. Distinguish routes returning to the same Sannomiya hotel from those changing accommodation.
2 days, 1 night
Choose Port Tower’s observation floors and Harborland, or daytime herb gardens and Meriken Park. Both routes include one Kobe night and final-day travel to Shin-Kobe.
3 days, 2 nights
Stay two nights in Sannomiya and choose Himeji Castle/Koko-en or an Arima public bath for the middle day. Himeji uses JR; Arima requires transfers at Tanigami and Arimaguchi.
4 days, 3 nights
Choose three nights at the same Sannomiya hotel for harbour, herb gardens and Himeji, or spend the middle night in Arima. The Arima option returns to Sannomiya the next day for another night.
5 days, 4 nights
Compare one Himeji night for an early castle visit with four Kobe nights and day trips to Himeji and Arima. An Osaka overnight stay changes the existing night allocation and onward travel.

Separate days for harbour, hilltop gardens, castle and hot springs
In Kobe’s harbour, distinguish Meriken Park/Port Tower from Harborland. Allow separate time for observation floors and waterfront walking. Nunobiki Herb Gardens is a ropeway and hilltop garden day; Himeji is a JR trip west for the castle and Koko-en. Arima involves transfers at Tanigami and Arimaguchi before a public bath or hot-spring stay. Do not squeeze all four into one short day.

Where should I eat after sightseeing?
On a harbour day, check Harborland business hours before choosing a meal. Eat lunch outside Himeji Castle after visiting, then go to Koko-en; castle tickets do not allow re-entry. At the herb gardens, allow ticket queues, garden walking and meals in addition to ropeway riding. For an Arima stay, check whether ryokan meals are included and their serving times. On a public-bath day trip, leave time to return to the station after bathing and eating.

Distinguish City Loop and rail tickets
City Loop to the harbour and herb gardens is separate from JR, subway and Kobe Electric Railway. Compare the ¥800 one-day pass and ¥1,200 consecutive two-day pass against actual rides and dates. Only paper one-day passes are sold on board. Do not apply one two-day pass to non-consecutive days such as days 1 and 3. Two buses boarded separately at Kamomeria count as two rides. The ordinary adult ¥720 one-way Arima fare via Tanigami includes the Sannomiya–Tanigami subway; do not add it again.
If leaving luggage at your hotel on departure day, allow time to collect it. Choose your final sightseeing stop around the time needed to reach your departure station or airport afterwards.

From Osaka or Kyoto, plan your return base first
For travel from Osaka or Kyoto to Kobe, select your actual starting station and destination in the Kobe Tourism Bureau access search. The routes below begin on arrival in Sannomiya; they do not include return travel from Osaka/Kyoto hotels. For a day trip, check the route from your chosen Kobe attraction back to the station and your return service. A Kobe-based day trip to Osaka or Kyoto should replace an existing day. Check destination station–attraction–station travel and return to the same Sannomiya hotel first.
An overnight stay in another city changes the current Sannomiya/Arima/Himeji night allocation. Before departure, check luggage storage, the next hotel’s check-in time and the walk from the station. For a single sightseeing day elsewhere, reduce the attractions to fit your return travel time.

Compare JR passes with ordinary tickets and actual travel days
The itineraries below use an ordinary JR Himeji return fare of ¥960 × 2 = ¥1,920. Do not assume a JR pass is cheaper for this trip alone. WEST QR Mini covers ordinary trains in its valid area for three consecutive days; do not assume it reaches Himeji. For Area, check your chosen 1–4 consecutive valid days and official coverage. Area does not include Shinkansen; buy the applicable fare and limited express tickets separately to use it.
Wide lasts five consecutive days and covers the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Okayama. A Shinkansen route through Shin-Kobe differs from conventional JR trains boarded at Sannomiya. The Tokaido Shinkansen between Kyoto and Shin-Osaka is excluded. For all three products, check foreign-government-issued passport, Temporary Visitor eligibility and actual coverage; both outward and return days must fall within validity. Calculate City Loop, Arima subway/Kobe Electric Railway, hotels and admission separately from these JR passes.

Distinguish routes from Shin-Kobe and Sannomiya
Shinkansen Shin-Kobe, JR Sannomiya and City Loop stops are different departure points. First identify the route from your arrival station to your hotel and the boarding point for sightseeing.
Shin-Kobe
For the subway to Sannomiya, check the platform inside Shin-Kobe and the walk from Sannomiya to your hotel.
For a Shinkansen departure, allow time from subway arrival to JR gates and platforms.
Sannomiya to the harbour or herb gardens
For the harbour, use City Loop southbound stop 13; for the herb gardens, use northbound stop 8.
Change buses at Kamomeria for Harborland. Check the Sannomiya-bound boarding point for your return.
JR Sannomiya to Himeji
Look up a Himeji-bound Special Rapid train. Leave Himeji Station through the north exit for the castle.
Allow castle/Koko-en visits and return walking to the station, then choose an Osaka/Kyoto-bound return train.
Subway Sannomiya to Arima
Transfer to Kobe Electric Railway at Tanigami, then to an Arima Onsen-bound train at Arimaguchi.
Return via Arimaguchi and Tanigami. Allow generous transfer time and choose both journeys.

Compare bus, rail and admission costs for your dates
One ticket does not cover both Kobe’s harbour buses and Himeji/Arima rail. Decide where to go each day, then check each route’s included and excluded costs.
Check consecutive days for harbour and herb gardens buses
Compare City Loop’s ¥800 one-day pass and ¥1,200 consecutive two-day pass with actual boardings. Days 1 and 3 cannot share one two-day pass. Calculate rail, herb gardens ropeway and admission separately.

Compare rail first for Himeji and Arima
Distinguish the JR Himeji return journey from the subway/Kobe Electric Railway Arima return journey. The adult ¥720 one-way Arima fare via Tanigami includes Sannomiya–Tanigami subway travel. Do not include ryokan accommodation or meals in the public-bath fee.

Frequently asked questions
Should I fit Kobe, Himeji and Arima into two days?
For a short stay, start with whichever interests you more: Kobe’s harbour or herb gardens. Himeji is a JR trip west; Arima requires two transfers across the mountains. Allow separate days for each.

Is the public-bath fee enough for an Arima overnight stay?
Kin no Yu admission is not a ryokan accommodation or meal price. For an Arima overnight stay, check the accommodation’s baths, meals and station access separately.
