Five days in Hyogo: stay in Himeji or travel from Kobe?
For an early Himeji Castle visit, stay in Himeji the previous night. For separate Himeji and Arima day trips without changing hotels, choose four nights in Sannomiya.
Himeji uses JR; Arima uses subway and Kobe Electric Railway transfers. After castle/Koko-en visits, the Himeji overnight route returns to Sannomiya for the remaining two nights.
Choose a 5 days, 4 nights itinerary
One night in Himeji, with a morning castle visit
Stay night 1 in Sannomiya, night 2 in Himeji and the final two nights in Sannomiya. Move to Himeji the day before your castle visit so you can start there the next morning.

Day 1: Kobe harbour
Stay in Sannomiya and walk Meriken Park’s waterfront. No paid tower visit is included; prepare to move to Himeji the next day.

Take City Loop from stop 13, Subway Sannomiya Station (southbound), to Meriken Park stop 16. Distinguish it from northbound stop 8. Walk past Port Tower’s exterior and along the park waterfront. Paid tower entry is excluded. Skip the waterfront walk if on-site controls prevent access.

- Sannomiya accommodation; JR Sannomiya → JR Himeji
From JR Sannomiya, take a Special Rapid train towards Himeji/Aboshi/Banshu-Ako and get off at Himeji. The official ride estimate is roughly 40 minutes, excluding station access and waits. Look up your day-2 morning train to Himeji and day-3 return to Sannomiya for their actual dates.

Day 3: Himeji Castle, Koko-en and return to Kobe
Start at Himeji Castle and Koko-en in the morning, then return to Sannomiya by JR. Divide your time between castle exhibits and the garden, and eat dinner in Kobe.
- Himeji accommodation → Himeji Castle keep and lunch
Aim to reach the castle for regular opening at 09:00. Early arrival may still involve an entry queue. Remove shoes and climb stairs inside the keep, so leave large luggage behind. Busy-period waits may add to the official roughly 90–120-minute visit. Afterwards, eat lunch outside without re-entering.

- West of Himeji Castle; separate Koko-en entrance → Koko-en and return to JR Himeji Station
After lunch, go to Koko-en’s separate entrance west of Himeji Castle. Find the gate in the enclosing wall and explore the garden. Regular hours are 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:30; check event-day exceptions. The combined ticket assumes visits to both sites that day. Return to JR Himeji Station afterwards. The official roughly 15-minute station-to-garden walk and the castle-to-garden walk are different sections.
- JR Himeji → JR Sannomiya and accommodation
From JR Himeji, take a train towards Osaka/Kyoto and get off at Sannomiya. Choose a return service using the official journey planner; eat dinner and stay in Sannomiya that night.
Day 4: daytime herb gardens
Take a northbound bus from Sannomiya for a daytime herb gardens visit. Keep the hotel you moved to from Himeji the previous day and return there afterwards.
- Sannomiya northbound stop 8 → Herb gardens stop 11 and lower station
Check garden operation before departure. If strong winds or lightning suspend the ropeway, switch to a meal and rest in town. Take City Loop from stop 8, Subway Sannomiya Station (northbound), to stop 11, Herb Gardens/Ropeway, then walk to the lower ropeway station. Distinguish it from harbour-bound southbound stop 13. Frequently asked questions
Can an overnight Himeji stay give me a morning castle visit?
The suggestion is to travel to Himeji the previous day, see the castle exterior, then visit the keep at regular 09:00 opening the next day. Check station-to-hotel and castle walks. Arriving at opening can still involve an entry queue.
Himeji Castle prices, hours and station accessHimeji Castle FAQ: visit time, stairs and re-entry
Should I add subway fares to the ¥720 Arima fare?
The checked adult ¥720 one-way fare covers Sannomiya via Tanigami to Kobe Electric Railway Arima Onsen Station. Do not add Sannomiya–Tanigami subway again. Recheck ordinary fares for your actual date in the operator’s search.
Can I visit Himeji Castle and Koko-en in one day from Kobe?
This route leaves Kobe in the morning, visits both and returns that day. Allow the station-to-castle walk, keep stairs, entry waits, lunch and garden visit beyond JR riding time. Compare an overnight Himeji stay if you want a detailed castle visit.

Does a JR pass to Himeji include Arima and harbour buses?
Calculate Kobe City Loop and Arima subway/Kobe Electric Railway separately from JR passes. Conventional JR Sannomiya–Himeji and Shinkansen via Shin-Kobe differ in route and pass conditions. Area excludes Shinkansen; check Wide’s valid Sanyo section and five consecutive days. Compare ordinary JR return ¥1,920 with pass prices for actual coverage and dates.

How should I divide Kobe days if I stay one night in Osaka?
Reduce Kobe nights by the number spent in Osaka and choose which existing sightseeing day to use there. The four-night Sannomiya route and Himeji overnight route allocate nights differently. Decide whether to return to Kobe or continue elsewhere the next day, then check JR travel and your next hotel’s location/check-in time.
