Three days in Kobe: Himeji Castle or Arima?

For three Kobe days, choose Himeji Castle/Koko-en or bathing at Arima Kin no Yu for the middle day. Both are day trips with two Sannomiya nights.

Himeji uses JR; Arima uses subway and Kobe Electric Railway transfers. Both rail routes are separate from the City Loop ticket for Kobe’s harbour.

Kobe harbour, Himeji Castle and Koko-en

Spend two nights at the same Sannomiya hotel, with separate days for the harbour and Himeji Castle/Koko-en. Explore more of the harbour on your final day before departing from Shin-Kobe Station.

Day 1: harbour walk from Meriken Park

Stay two nights in Sannomiya. Walk the park and harbour on day 1; visit Himeji Castle and Koko-en together the next day.

  1. Sannomiya accommodation; southbound stop 13 → Meriken Park stop 16

Take City Loop from stop 13, Subway Sannomiya Station (southbound), to Meriken Park stop 16. Distinguish it from northbound stop 8. Walk past Port Tower’s exterior and along the park waterfront. Paid tower entry is excluded. Skip the waterfront walk if on-site controls prevent access.

Find Kamomeria Central Terminal to the west on the official map. Take City Loop from stop 0 to stop 7, Sannomiya Center Gai East Entrance. Distinguish it from the Port Loop stop and allow walking and waiting time. Return to your hotel and eat dinner in Sannomiya.

Day 2 morning: JR to Himeji Castle

Start at Himeji Castle in the morning, have lunch outside, then visit Koko-en. Look up both Sannomiya–Himeji train journeys for your travel date.

  1. JR Sannomiya → JR Himeji

From JR Sannomiya, take a Special Rapid train towards Himeji/Aboshi/Banshu-Ako and get off at Himeji. The official ride time is roughly 40 minutes, excluding station access and waits. Choose morning arrival and return services for your actual date.

  2. JR Himeji Station north exit → Himeji Castle

Leave Himeji Station through the north exit and walk towards the castle. The official station-to-castle walk is roughly 20 minutes, excluding ticket queues and movement within paid areas. Note lunch options between the station and castle, and enter the castle in the morning.

Himeji Castle prices, hours and station access

  3. Himeji Castle → Castle keep, then lunch outside

The official FAQ suggests roughly 90–120 minutes for the castle, with about an extra hour of waiting during busy periods. Remove your shoes inside the keep and climb steep stairs; there is no elevator. Carry minimal luggage. If stairs are difficult, do not finalize an itinerary that depends on entering the keep. Start in the morning instead of arriving near the 16:00 last entry. Check the ticket’s same-day validity and no-re-entry conditions, then have lunch outside after your visit.

  4. Outside Himeji Castle → Separate Koko-en entrance and garden visit

Visit Koko-en in the afternoon before returning to Kobe. After leaving the castle, find Koko-en’s entrance west of the castle on the official access map. Look for the gate in the enclosing wall; this is separate from the paid castle entrance. Allow walking time between them. Regular garden hours are 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:30; check event-day hours separately. The cost uses a combined ticket for both visits that day.

  5. Koko-en → JR Himeji to Sannomiya

Koko-en’s official 15-minute walk estimate is from JR Himeji Station towards the garden. For the return, check the route from your actual exit at your walking pace and allow station access and train waits. Take a train towards Osaka/Kyoto from JR Himeji and get off at Sannomiya. If the castle visit runs late, shorten your garden visit or check a later return train.

Day 3 morning: Harborland and departure preparations

Walk Harborland’s waterfront, return to Sannomiya and depart from Shin-Kobe. Shorten the visit if you cannot leave enough time for the walk and final transfer.

  1. Sannomiya accommodation → Kamomeria and Harborland walk

Take City Loop from stop 13, Subway Sannomiya Station (southbound), to Kamomeria stop 0. Distinguish it from Port Loop, then change to the next City Loop bus to Harborland stop 1. Each boarding incurs a separate fare.

Platform 2 serves Shin-Osaka/Tokyo; platform 1 serves Okayama/Kyushu. Add ticket collection, elevator waits and walking with luggage to JR’s standard 10-minute transfer allowance. Shorten or skip the last visit if needed to catch your reserved train. Airport departures require separate terminal travel and flight check-in.

Admission and transport costs checked: ¥6,020

What’s included: Himeji Castle/Koko-en combined ticket, JR return fare and the five specified City Loop boardings

Extra costs and conditions: Final-day subway, Shinkansen, airport travel, accommodation, meals, luggage storage and tower admission are excluded.

JR return fare is ¥1,920; five City Loop rides cost ¥1,500. Checked cost: standard adult castle/garden combined ticket ¥2,600 + JR ¥960 each way × 2 = ¥4,520. Two City Loop rides on day 1 and three on day 3 cost ¥300 × 5 = ¥1,500, bringing the subtotal to ¥6,020. The Himeji day falls between them, so one two-day City Loop pass cannot cover days 1 and 3. Separate one-day passes would cost ¥1,600, which is ¥100 more than these five individual fares.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reach Arima with a Kobe city bus pass?

City Loop tickets do not cover the subway and Kobe Electric Railway to Arima. The ordinary adult fare via Tanigami is ¥720 one way; calculate it separately from City Loop.

Can I use the same two-day bus pass on days 1 and 3?

The pass covers consecutive days. The three-day Himeji Castle/Koko-en route uses City Loop on days 1 and 3, so one pass is not applied to both. The calculation uses five individual fares totalling ¥1,500.
