Ibaraki: where should I stay, and what should I see?

Start with Kodokan and Kairakuen in Mito for an unhurried visit to a historic school and garden. Choose Hitachi Seaside Park for walks and photos among flowers, or the Oarai aquarium for sharks and jellyfish. For waterfall views from different heights, spend a day at Fukuroda in Daigo. Visit the park, aquarium and waterfall on separate days. These itineraries start at Tokyo Station, use accommodation near Mito Station and return to Mito on the last day for a limited express to Tokyo.

Choose the garden, aquatic life or waterfall first

Compare Kodokan and Kairakuen in Mito with nearby Hitachi Seaside Park, the Oarai aquarium and Fukuroda Falls. Bus-served entrances and seasonal fees differ. Choose your visits in the attraction guide, then add them to the itineraries.

Day-by-day itineraries

Choose whether to spend longer walking among park flowers, see sharks and jellyfish at the aquarium, or visit Fukuroda Falls. Every itinerary stays in Mito and returns to Tokyo Station. An extra day lets you add another attraction or give Kodokan and Kairakuen a more relaxed day each.

2 days, 1 night

Visit Kodokan and Kairakuen together on day one, then focus on the park (A) or aquarium (B) on day two. This short trip does not add the waterfall.

3 days, 2 nights

A gives Kodokan, the park and Kairakuen a day each. B combines the two historic sights on day one, visits the waterfall on the middle day and the aquarium on the last day.

4 days, 3 nights

Choose the itinerary without the waterfall to give Mito's historic school and garden a day each. For Fukuroda Falls too, combine those sights on day one and give the waterfall a day. Both spend three nights in Mito and visit the park and aquarium on separate days.

5 days, 4 nights

Give Kodokan and Kairakuen a relaxed day each, or combine them on day one and add Mito City Museum's free history and folklore exhibits. Check exhibition dates and opening first for the museum option. Both itineraries give the park, waterfall and aquarium a day each.

Check connection buffers and seasonal costs

Check bus and train timetables together for returns from the park or aquarium. The outward Fukuroda Falls route walks about 40 minutes from Fukuroda Station in official guidance. For the return, connect the Takimoto bus with a Mito-bound train at Fukuroda Station; if delayed, check the next service. Costs use October reference fares for adult paper tickets and advance limited express purchases. JPY 800 park admission applies during 9 October–3 November 2026; JPY 320 Kairakuen main garden admission applies outside the plum festival. Accommodation, meals and additional activities cost extra.

Are ordinary tickets or a pass better for these itineraries?

Compare the Tokyo–Mito limited express and JR Mito–Katsuta and Mito–Fukuroda journeys within JR TOKYO Wide Pass coverage. The adult pass costs JPY 16,000 and lasts three consecutive days. An original passport issued outside Japan is required; this pass does not require Temporary Visitor status. Reserve ordinary-class seats before travelling. Kashima Rinkai Railway, buses to the park, garden, aquarium and waterfall, facility admission, accommodation and meals are excluded.

Ordinary tickets calculated in the trip-length itineraries are JPY 8,000 return for Tokyo–Mito limited express travel, JPY 400 return for Mito–Katsuta on a park day, and JPY 2,080 return for Mito–Fukuroda on a waterfall day. All three JR sections total JPY 10,480, below the JPY 16,000 pass price. A pass is therefore not recommended as the cheaper choice for this itinerary alone. This comparison uses October example adult paper fares and advance ordinary-class reserved-seat tickets, rather than a new booking quote. If adding other JR travel, recalculate actual covered journeys and dates.

Four- and five-day itineraries have Tokyo departure and return spread across four or five days, so one three-consecutive-day pass cannot cover the full round trip. Do not simply subtract existing itinerary totals from the pass price. Compare ordinary-ticket sections alongside separate city transport and facility costs.
