Three places on separate days from a Mito base

Spend two nights in Mito for an unhurried historic school visit and garden walk. Visit Kodokan on day one, Hitachi Seaside Park on day two and Kairakuen on the last day. This option keeps the two historic sights on separate days.

Day 1: Kodokan, overnight in Mito

    Go straight along the north deck, down the stairs at the end, then right in front of the ginkgo tree. With the Keisei Hotel on your left, head up Ichozaka, then turn right beside Sannomaru Elementary School. Enter through the fence on your left and register at the side entrance to the right of the closed main gate. Follow the official photo directions.

    Explore the historic school's Seicho main hall, Shizendo and garden. October hours are 09:00–16:30; adult admission is JPY 420.

    After your visit, retrace your route to the station area for lunch, then go to your accommodation. This option does not add Kairakuen today.

Day 2: Hitachi Seaside Park

    Take a bus towards the park's south gate via city hall and Joyful Honda, getting off at the west gate. The adult one-way fare is JPY 450; this itinerary does not continue to the south gate.

  4. Hitachi Seaside Park → Walk around Miharashi no Oka

    Pick up a park map and walk towards Miharashi no Oka, with lunch and rest in the park. October hours are 09:30–17:00. The seasonal adult admission for 9 October–3 November 2026 is JPY 800. Flower blooms and kochia colours vary with your visit date. Rides, rental bicycles and the Seaside Train cost extra.

  5. Kaihin Koen Nishiguchi bus stop 1 → Katsuta Station

    Exit at the west gate and take the Katsuta Station-bound bus from stop 1 via Joyful Honda and city hall. The adult one-way fare is JPY 450.

Day 3: Kairakuen, then Tokyo

    From Kodokan bus stop 1, take loop bus route 10 towards Kairakuen to Kobuntei Omote-mon Iriguchi. The adult one-way fare is JPY 270. Walk towards the main garden's Omote-mon gate after getting off.

Board at Mito and get off at Tokyo Station.

Two Mito nights for historic sights, a waterfall and the aquarium

    Use the map outside the station to locate Fukuroda Elementary School and the eastward Takimoto/waterfall direction, then follow on-site signs. Tourism association guidance gives about 40 minutes walking from the station to the falls. Leave time for the walk and admission registration.

    After visiting, have lunch and rest outside the tunnel, then walk to Takimoto bus stop. Tourism association guidance gives about 10 minutes from the falls to the stop. Check Fukuroda Station-bound departures at bay 1; distinguish it from other roadside stops named Fukuroda.

Do I take a bus immediately after arriving at Fukuroda Station?

This itinerary walks out from the station to the falls, about 40 minutes in official guidance. To use a bus instead, check your date's train arrival and waterfall-bound bus departure together. Return by walking from the falls to Takimoto, taking a station-bound bus, then transferring to a Mito train. Connections between buses and trains are not guaranteed if delayed.
