Kairakuen Garden

偕楽園

Walk at an unhurried pace among Kairakuen's bamboo and tall cedars. For plum blossoms, check bloom updates for your visit date. Garden admission and Kobuntei interior admission require different tickets.

  • Getting thereWalk from Mito Station's north side towards Kodokan bus stop 1. Take loop bus route 10 towards Kairakuen to Kobuntei Omote-mon Iriguchi, then walk about 5–8 minutes to the main garden's Omote-mon gate. Return from the same stop 1 towards Mito Station's north exit. Distinguish this from the east gate and Kobuntei building entrance.

Kodokan

弘道館

Kodokan was the Mito domain's school, teaching samurai both academic subjects and martial arts. Explore the surviving Seicho main hall and Shizendo for a sense of the historic school. There are changes in level indoors and outdoors; check official accessibility guidance first if you need mobility assistance.

Hitachi Seaside Park

国営ひたち海浜公園

Choose Hitachi Seaside Park for unhurried walks and photos among flowers. Explore the park around Miharashi no Oka's flowers and kochia. Allow time to walk from the entrance to your chosen area and rest along the way. Flower blooms and red kochia colours vary with travel dates and weather.

  • AdmissionSenior high school students and older JPY 450, or JPY 800 including seasonal admission during 3 April–6 May and 9 October–3 November 2026. Junior high school students and younger enter free. Rides and rental bicycles cost extra.
  • Hours1 March–17 July and September–October: 09:30–17:00. 18 July–end of August: until 18:00. November–end of February: until 16:30. The park normally closes on Tuesdays; the official October 2026 calendar lists daily opening. Check other months and years separately.
  • Getting thereTake a bus from Katsuta Station east exit bay 2 to Kaihin Koen Nishiguchi (海浜公園西口), the west gate stop. The ride takes about 15 minutes.

Aqua World Ibaraki Prefectural Oarai Aquarium

アクアワールド茨城県大洗水族館

For close views of aquatic life, explore Aqua World Oarai's shark and jellyfish exhibits and large tanks of swimming fish. Return to Mito after the daytime visit. Night events require separate tickets; a daytime ticket does not allow you to stay into the night event.

  • AdmissionAdults JPY 2,300; elementary and junior high school students JPY 1,100; preschool children aged 3 and older JPY 400.
  • HoursRegular hours 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:00. Closed for maintenance on 7–11 December 2026. Date- and time-specific admission may apply on busy days.
  • Getting thereFrom Oarai Station, take the Umimachi Line (うみまちライン) sightseeing route (観光ルート) to Aqua World Oarai (アクアワールド・大洗). Walk about 1 minute to the facility. The bus takes about 20 minutes and costs JPY 200 per adult ride. Other loop routes do not serve the aquarium.
  • MealsThe food court is scheduled to close from 1 November 2026 to mid-March 2027. Do not make a food court lunch a fixed part of your itinerary during that period.

Fukuroda Falls

袋田の滝

See Fukuroda Falls from different heights at observation decks 1 and 2. Take a return JR Suigun Line journey from Mito for this visit, which differs from a summit hike. Match station walking time with return buses and trains.

  • AdmissionIndividual admission: adults JPY 500; elementary and junior high school students JPY 300. These viewing facility fees apply from 1 July 2025 and include observation decks 1 and 2.
  • HoursMay–October: 08:00–18:00. November: 08:00–17:00. December–April: 09:00–17:00. Regular opening is year-round; check temporary changes that day.
  • Connecting station, bus stop and entranceOfficial guidance gives about 40 minutes walking from JR Fukuroda Station, or about 10 minutes from Takimoto bus stop. This itinerary walks out and returns from Takimoto bay 1 on a Fukuroda Station-bound bus costing JPY 260. Enter at the viewing tunnel entrance and use the elevator inside for observation deck 2.
  • Dates and connectionsThe reference JR Mito–Fukuroda fare was JPY 1,040 one way in an Eki-net search on 8 October 2026. Connect your return bus and Mito train using timetables for your actual visit date; if delayed, check the next service. Stay in Mito after your waterfall day.

For Mito's urban history and everyday tools alongside historic school buildings, explore the municipal museum's exhibitions. Four-night option B combines Kodokan and Kairakuen on day one, then visits the museum on day two. Check exhibition contents and dates for your visit.

  • Getting thereThe museum is at 3-3-20 Omachi, Mito, in the same building as the central library. Four-night option B walks both ways from Mito Station's north side using the city map and on-site signs. Distinguish library reception from the museum entrance.

Can I use a daytime aquarium ticket for a night event?

You must leave after daytime visiting hours and enter a night event with a separate ticket. A daytime ticket does not allow you to remain into the night event.

Does Fukuroda Falls still cost JPY 300 per adult?

No. Since 1 July 2025, individual adult admission has been JPY 500, including observation decks 1 and 2.
