Mie travel guide: choose a base in Ise, Toba or Iga

Start with accommodation near Iseshi Station for Ise Jingu, or near Toba Station for the aquarium and Pearl Island. If you include the ninja museum, check the separate move from Iga's Uenoshi area to accommodation in Ise.

Which should I visit first: shrines, the sea or ninja exhibits?

For shrine visits, consider Ise Jingu's Geku and Naiku; for marine life, look at Toba Aquarium. Compare Mikimoto Pearl Island for pearls and ama diver demonstrations, and Futami for a coastal walk. If you are interested in a ninja house and historical exhibits, give Iga a separate visit day.

Itineraries by trip length

To add the aquarium or a coastal walk to your shrine visits, choose a route based in Ise with day trips. To see the ninja museum too, you can spend one night in Uenoshi before moving to Ise. For one night and two days, compare shrine visits in Ise with the aquarium and Pearl Island in Toba. On the last day, include only places that leave time to return to the station and catch your booked departure.

2 days, 1 night

For a short shrine trip, choose Ise's Geku and Naiku. To visit the aquarium and Pearl Island on separate days, choose Toba. These two routes start and finish in different areas.

3 days, 2 nights

Compare two nights in Ise with a return trip to Toba Aquarium against visiting the ninja museum in Iga and then moving to Ise. The route starting in Iga requires a rail transfer at Iga-Kambe.

4 days, 3 nights

Compare several nights in Ise with a visit to the Futami coast against starting in Iga and visiting Geku and Naiku on different days. The Ise-based route makes a return trip to Futami on the last day; change the visit order or trip length if your departure is early.

5 days, 4 nights

Stay four nights in Ise to separate your Futami visit from departure day, or move between one night in Uenoshi, two in Ise and one in Toba. Pearl Island is excluded from the basic itinerary of the route with a Toba overnight stay.

The Geku area and the streets outside Naiku are different neighbourhoods

You can walk to Geku from Iseshi Station, while Naiku requires a bus journey. After Geku, return towards the station for a meal. On your Naiku day, allow meal time in Oharaimachi. Some shops outside Naiku close early, so compare dinner options around Iseshi and Ujiyamada stations.

How should I compare route costs with transport passes?

Separate facility admission from transport costs

Ordinary visits to Geku and Naiku are free. Toba Aquarium, Pearl Island and the ninja museum charge admission, and the ninja show costs extra. The ¥4,620 for 2 nights, 3 days A adds aquarium admission, return regular Iseshi–Toba trains and the return Naiku bus fare. Other routes may give partial totals excluding intercity rail, so read the included and excluded items first.

Distinguish Kintetsu and JR pass coverage

The Kintetsu Rail Pass 5-day covers all Kintetsu lines and Iga Railway for five consecutive days; limited express tickets are separate. Do not confuse this with the JR Sangu Line and Ise Railway sections covered by the Ise–Kumano–Wakayama pass. Ise Railway and Iga Railway are different companies. Choose the actual lines and dates you will use, then compare ordinary tickets.
