Day 1: Bandai Bridge and riverside walk
Take a gentle arrival-day walk around Bandai Bridge and the riverside, then stay near Niigata Station.

- Bandai City → Bandai Bridge and Yasuragitei
Continue towards Bandai Bridge and Yasuragitei. The official city route estimates about five minutes for this section. Choose how much of the bridge and riverside to walk based on your arrival time and the weather.
- Bandai Bridge and Yasuragitei → Niigata Station, then booked accommodation
Return via Bandai City to Niigata Station, then go to your booked accommodation and rest. The city guide estimates about 15 minutes from the riverside to the station, excluding meals, shopping and traffic-light waits.

Day 2: Yoshida transfer and Yahiko Shrine
Walk past Yahiko Shrine’s torii gates and stone bridge, explore the grounds, then return to your Niigata accommodation. Change trains at Yoshida, and return to Yahiko Station after worship and lunch.

Go from your accommodation to Niigata Station. Hotel Mets guests can use the west connecting passage. Choose a JR Echigo Line train towards Yoshida. The Yahiko JR return fare is excluded from the subtotal; check your ticket’s coverage.

Take the Echigo Line to Yoshida and get off. Check the departure platform for your Yahiko connection in JR’s information for your travel date.

Follow the station map’s stairs and connecting passage to the Yahiko-bound platform. The station information lists no elevator or escalator; if stairs are difficult, ask JR about another way to travel.

- Yoshida Station Yahiko-bound platform → Yahiko Station
Take a Yahiko-bound JR Yahiko Line train and get off at Yahiko. If your previous train was delayed, check the next connection.
- Yahiko Station → First shrine torii gate, worship hall and grounds
The official guide gives about 1 km or a 15-minute walk from Yahiko Station to the shrine. Pass the first torii gate, stone bridge, second torii and Zuishinmon, worship in front of the hall and explore the grounds. Meals and visiting time are additional to the walk.
- Yahiko Station → Change at Yoshida, then Niigata Station
After the shrine and village, return to Yahiko Station and take a train to Yoshida. Get off at Yoshida even on a Higashi-Sanjo-bound service. Transfer to a Niigata-bound Echigo Line train. The ropeway, mountain summit and paid treasure hall are excluded from this route.

The Yoshida transfer involves stairs. Leave time to return to the station after the grounds and lunch, and check actual-date return services and fares with JR. Ask the shrine about ordinary grounds worship fees and access hours; plan grounds walks in daylight. The treasure hall, prayer services and ropeway are excluded.
Day 3: Marinepia Nihonkai
See marine life in the Sea of Japan main tank and penguin exhibits. Indoor exhibits are accessible on rainy days.
- Niigata Station bay 9 → C22 to Suizokukan-mae
Take a C22 bus bound for Suizokukan-mae from Niigata Station bus terminal bay 9 and get off at the terminus. The adult fare is ¥260 one way. Check the return Niigata Station-bound bus before setting your visit length.
- Suizokukan-mae bus stop → Front entrance, exhibits and meal
Pay ordinary adult admission of ¥1,500 at the front entrance’s ticket office. Normal hours are 09:00–17:00, with ticket sales until 16:30. Explore the main tank and indoor exhibits, taking breaks for lunch and rest; choose performances from the day’s information. Meals and additional activities are extra.
- Aquarium exit to Suizokukan-mae stop → C22 to Niigata Station, then the same accommodation
Take a Niigata Station-bound C22 from Suizokukan-mae. Add the walk to the stop and waiting time to your visit, then return to the same accommodation and rest.

On aquarium closure days, you can switch to the observatory and market route. If only performances are suspended, focus on the exhibits. Use the facility links in the attraction information to check closures and performance times.
Day 4: observatory and Pia Bandai
Combine city views with a market lunch. After the observatory, walk to the market, then return by station-bound bus.

Take a Sado Kisen-bound bus via Toki Messe from Niigata Station bus terminal bay 17, and get off at Toki Messe. The adult fare is ¥260 one way. Use the terminal’s second-floor pedestrian passage to reach the bay.

Cross the plaza and enter Bandaijima Building through the Hotel Nikko Niigata and office entrance. Take the direct observatory elevator from floor 1 to floor 31, distinguishing it from the hotel and office elevators. Ordinary admission is free. Normal hours are 08:00–22:00, with last admission at 21:30. Private bookings and events may shorten hours or close the observatory.

One night in Niigata city and two in Ryotsu on Sado

Day 2: Niigata Port to Ryotsu accommodation
Take the ferry to Sado and stay in Ryotsu. Allow time to reach the port, collect tickets and board, then travel to your accommodation after disembarking.

- Sado Kisen bus stop → Passenger terminal and boarding procedures
Walk to the passenger terminal for tickets and boarding procedures. The bus operator advises completing procedures at least 30 minutes before sailing. The ferry operator distinguishes recommended port arrival by ticket method: about 10–20 minutes before sailing for digital boarding tickets, or 30–40 minutes for counter or ticket-machine purchases. Allow more time to suit your purchase method.

Take a Ryotsu-bound car ferry in second class to Sado. The sailing takes about two hours and 30 minutes. Check date-specific fares in the costs below and ferry operator’s information. Port buses, ticket collection, waiting and disembarkation are extra time. The onboard restaurant may not operate; check the day’s information if planning to eat on board.

- Ryotsu Port ferry terminal → Ryotsu accommodation
Go from Ryotsu Port to Guesthouse Zink, an accommodation candidate. The operator estimates about a four-minute walk from the terminal.
- Zink accommodation → Lake Kamo near the port, then the same accommodation
Take a gentle walk along Lake Kamo’s edge near Ryotsu Port, then return to the same accommodation. The tourism body’s roughly three-minute walk from the port bus stop to the lake is not a circuit of the whole lake. Rest and explore the port area today; the mine is excluded.
For a stay near Ryotsu Port, consider Zink, about a four-minute walk from the terminal. If booking elsewhere, check the route from the port to that accommodation.
Day 3: return trip to Sado Gold Mine and Ryotsu overnight
Walk the mine tunnels and see mining exhibits. Afterwards, return by bus to your Ryotsu accommodation for another night, then take the ferry to Niigata the next day.

Take a Main Line bus bound for Sado Kinzan-mae from Ryotsu Port’s Sado Kisen stop and get off at the terminus. Check the destination: not every Main Line service reaches the mine. The direct adult fare is ¥860 one way.

- Sado Kinzan-mae → Mine entrance beside the stop, then admission guidance
Go to the mine entrance beside the stop and follow ticketing and admission instructions. The ordinary Sado Gold Mine course costs ¥1,500 for junior high school students and older, with a suggested visit of 60–90 minutes. From April to October, admission starts at 08:00, last entry is 16:00 and closing is 17:30. From November to March, these times are 08:30, 15:30 and 17:00. There are stairs; check notices for repairs or other access changes before visiting.

- Sado Kinzan-mae, then change at Aikawa → Ryotsu Port, then the same island accommodation
Take a bus from Sado Kinzan-mae to Aikawa, then change for Ryotsu Port. Adult fares are ¥260 and ¥860, totalling ¥1,120. Choose both return buses before starting your visit. Return to the same Ryotsu accommodation for another night; your ferry is the next day.

Day 4: Ryotsu Port to Niigata Station

Return from Ryotsu Port on a Niigata-bound car ferry in second class. Beyond the roughly two-hour, 30-minute sailing, allow disembarkation and port bus waits, leaving enough time for departures beyond Niigata Station.

Frequently asked questions
Do I take the Niigata ferry on the same day as the mine return?
With two Ryotsu nights, return by bus to your accommodation after the mine and take the Niigata ferry the next day. Leave time to eat and rest at the port on ferry day, and choose your Niigata Port–station bus.

Are mine and island bus times the same in winter?
From April to October, ordinary mine course admission starts at 08:00, last entry is 16:00 and closing is 17:30. From November to March, these are 08:30, 15:30 and 17:00. Island bus examples use the weekday timetable for April 1–November 30, 2026. For December onwards, Saturdays, Sundays or public holidays, check your date’s timetable including returns.
