Stay in Okayama or Kurashiki?
For castle/garden and Kurashiki together, consider Okayama Station as your base. For two days of streets and museums, stay near Kurashiki Station. Washuzan’s Seto Ohashi views are a separate bus trip from Kojima Station.
Choose the Okayama attractions you want to visit first
The castle and Korakuen Garden are in Okayama city; the canal streets, Ohara Museum of Art and folkcraft museum are in Kurashiki. For views of the Great Seto Bridge, head to Mount Washuzan in Kojima. Kibitsujinja Shrine requires a separate JR trip to Kibitsu Station followed by a walk.
Itineraries by duration
Look around Okayama Station if the castle and garden are your priorities, or Kurashiki Station if you want more time for historic streets and museums. With extra days, compare routes that include Kibitsujinja Shrine or Mount Washuzan. Arrange your onward trip from the place where your final sightseeing day ends.
2 days, 1 night
Stay one night around Okayama Station to visit Okayama Castle and Korakuen Garden on separate days. Choose accommodation around Kurashiki Station for the historic streets and Ohara Museum of Art. Both routes include sightseeing on day two and do not suit a morning departure.
3 days, 2 nights
Stay two nights in Okayama for the castle, garden, Kurashiki streets and Kibitsujinja Shrine. For Ohara Museum of Art, the folkcraft museum and a Washuzan sunset, you can stay two nights in Kurashiki instead. The sunset bus requires a matching operating day and monthly departure time.
4 days, 3 nights
With three nights in Okayama, you can combine Ohara Museum of Art with a Washuzan sunset, or give the Kurashiki streets and folkcraft museum a day each. Include the sunset program only if day three is a Friday, Saturday or the day before a public holiday, and return to Kojima Station on the same bus.
5 days, 4 nights
Stay four nights in Okayama to visit the Kurashiki streets and Ohara Museum of Art on separate days from one hotel. To spend two days in Kurashiki, split your stay into two nights in Okayama and two in Kurashiki. On the third day, after changing hotels, reach Kojima Station in time for that month's sunset bus departure. If you are running late, leave Washuzan out that day.
Which area should you stay in?
Accommodation and sightseeing areas
Okayama city’s castle and garden are close together; Kurashiki’s historical quarter is a walk from a station in another city. Washuzan is in Kurashiki’s Kojima area, rather than beside the historical quarter. Kibitsujinja Shrine is a separate rail trip west of Okayama city. Northern Tsuyama and Hiruzen are excluded from these routes.

Choose accommodation, arrival and departure stations
Keep an Okayama Station base for return trips to Kurashiki, Kibitsu and Kojima. One-night Course B and two-night Course B stay near Kurashiki Station for two days of streets and exhibits. Four-night Course B moves from two Okayama nights to two Kurashiki nights. No route stays in Kojima; choosing that base requires new return routes and costs.

Match local JR costs with regional pass coverage
Four nights and five days Course A’s JR basic fares are two Kurashiki returns ¥1,320, Kojima return ¥1,020 and Kibitsu return ¥420, totalling ¥2,760. Its ¥6,420 subtotal also includes admission, trams and sunset program, so do not compare the entire subtotal with a JR pass.
The adult Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass costs ¥17,000 for five days. If using only this route’s local and rapid trains within the prefecture, these JR costs alone do not make the pass cheaper. For additional Shinkansen or limited express journeys to/from Kansai or Hiroshima, compare actual sections, seats and dates again. This route does not count trams, Shimoden buses or admission as included in the pass.
Washuzan uses temporary daytime buses or a separate sunset program from Kojima. The ¥520 daytime pass and ¥540 sunset ticket differ. Northern Tsuyama and Hiruzen are outside this southern route; their extra transport is excluded.

The Okayama castle/garden route adds admission and return trams; the Kurashiki route adds Ohara combined admission. Intercity JR is excluded from the one-night subtotals below. For Kojima/Kibitsu or accommodation moves, check daily tables separately for JR/buses, accommodation, meals and airport travel.
Four nights and five days Course A’s JR basic fares for Kurashiki, Kojima and Kibitsu returns from Okayama total ¥2,760. Add Kansai/Hiroshima journeys only after checking coverage and dates. City trams, Kojima–Washuzan buses and admission are excluded from JR pass calculations.
From Okayama accommodation, choose each Kurashiki, Kojima and Kibitsu JR return separately. For the sunset program, check the Okayama-bound train after the Kojima return bus. When moving to Kurashiki accommodation, distinguish move-day one-way fares from sightseeing-day returns.

Getting to and from Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter
Official guidance gives about ten minutes from Kurashiki Station’s south side to the quarter entrance. This differs from the museum’s roughly 15-minute approach to Ohara’s Main Building. JR rides and waits take extra time.

From Kojima Station to a Washuzan sunset and back
From Okayama Station, take a local Seto-Ohashi Line train that stops at Kojima, then walk to bus bay 5 outside Kojima Station. Choose your JR train around the monthly departure time of the sunset program, which runs on Fridays, Saturdays and days before public holidays. If the operating day does not match, or the scheduled bus return leaves too little time to catch JR, skip the seaside visit and rest in Okayama. The program visits Sanbyakuzan and the Washuzan viewpoint before returning to Kojima Station. It allows about 15 minutes at each viewpoint and costs JPY 540. Use the official monthly departure and return timetable. Reservations are not required, but you cannot board a full bus; skip the visit if you have no alternative transport arranged. Follow the crew's instructions for walking at the stops. After the program bus returns to Kojima Station, take a local train to Okayama. Choose a JR departure that leaves enough time to get ready to board after the bus's scheduled return. Stay in Okayama again that night.

Three nights, four days: choose a Washuzan sunset or streets and crafts

Barazushi, a local sushi dish topped with several ingredients, is one meal option. Fruit desserts change with the season and fruit available, so ask the shop whether white peach or grape dishes are on the menu. Check a shop in the Okayama or Kurashiki neighbourhood where you will be that day.

Frequently asked questions
Can I walk from the historical quarter to Washuzan?
Do not combine them as one walking route. Washuzan is in Kurashiki’s Kojima area. This route travels from Kurashiki via Okayama to Kojima Station, then changes to a bus.
