Wakayama travel: mountains or coast first?

For two days, choose a night in Koyasan to see temple paintings and stone gardens, or a white-sand walk at Shirarahama followed by Sandanbeki cliffs the next day. Koyasan uses Nankai trains, cable car and mountain buses; the coast uses JR and local buses. To combine the sea and falls, compare the five-day route that moves accommodation from Shirahama to Kii-Katsuura.

Temple mountains or coastal scenery: which appeals more?

Compare Kongobuji and Danjo Garan in Koyasan, Shirahama’s beach, Sandanbeki and Engetsu Island, and Nachi Falls from Kii-Katsuura. Wakayama Castle keep, temple interiors, the cave and paid platform each have separate fees and admission conditions.

Itineraries by trip length

Use Nankai trains, cable car and mountain buses for the mountains, and JR with local buses for the coast. First decide whether to stay in Koyasan or Shirahama, or move from Shirahama to Kii-Katsuura. Routes with late first-day arrivals leave sightseeing for another day.

2 days, 1 night

Visit two Koyasan temples on separate days, or split the beach and cliffs between two days in Shirahama. Short stays focus on either the mountains or coast.

3 days, 2 nights

Visit the castle in Wakayama city before moving to a Koyasan stay, or keep the same Shirahama accommodation for two nights and visit the beach, cliffs and Engetsu Island on separate days.

4 days, 3 nights

Stay two nights in Koyasan, then spend the final night in Wakayama city. Compare three nights in Kii-Katsuura if you need a late arrival day and weather backup for the falls.

5 days, 4 nights

Spend two nights in Shirahama and two in Kii-Katsuura to split sea and falls visits. For a late first-day city arrival, two nights each in Wakayama city and Koyasan also separate sightseeing and return days.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit Koyasan, Shirahama and Nachi in two days?

Choose one area first. Mountain trains and the cable car use a different transport system from coastal JR trains and local buses. Even these shorter routes require checking final transfers and return services.
