Choose this route to combine Wakayama Castle with Koyasan’s temples. After one night in Wakayama city, take JR to Hashimoto, then Nankai train, cable car and bus to Koyasan for another night.
Day 1: Wakayama Castle keep and a city stay
For the city night, choose accommodation with access to JR Wakayama Station. In Koyasan, check access to Kongobuji, Danjo Garan and the station-bound bus. Once you have addresses and dates, check the JR, Nankai, cable car and mountain bus connections together.

From JR Wakayama Station’s central exit, take an appropriate castle-bound Wakayama Bus service, such as route 0 or 25, to Wakayamajo-mae. The official estimate of about 10 minutes is the bus ride only; add waits and the uphill approach from the stop to the keep. Bus times and return fares are excluded from the subtotal.

Have lunch after visiting the castle. If arriving late around midday, eat first only if you will still have enough time before last admission at 17:00. Usual keep hours are 09:00–17:30, with closure December 29–31. Also avoid the temporary closure on December 9, 2026.

- Castle keep and Wakayamajo-mae → Return towards the JR station and city accommodation
After visiting, find the JR Wakayama Station-bound boarding point at Wakayamajo-mae and check the return service. Stay one night in Wakayama city, then travel to Koyasan the next day.
Day 2 morning: JR Wakayama Station to Hashimoto

From JR Wakayama Station, choose a Wakayama Line train towards Kokawa and Hashimoto. The official station guide lists platform 7; confirm the day’s signs. Use neither Nankai Wakayamashi Station nor the Kishigawa Line. Look up your JR arrival and onward Nankai connection separately for the travel date.

Check the weekday or weekend/public holiday timetable for your date, together with the connecting cable car at Gokurakubashi. Travel from your departure city to Hashimoto is separate. Distinguish ordinary tickets from reserved-seat and limited express supplements.

Leave the train and change to the Koyasan-bound cable car. Choose a cable car that allows transfer time after your train arrives, using the weekday or weekend/public holiday timetable for your date. From Koyasan Station, a mountain bus is still needed to reach your temple or accommodation.

- Outside Koyasan Station → Kongobuji-mae stop
From Koyasan-ekimae, take a mountain bus via Kongobuji-mae and get off there. The official fare tables list JPY 460 for adults on this section of routes 21, 31, 41, 42, 43, 52, 53 and 55. Route 44 via Daimon Minami Parking follows a different stop order. Check the station timetable’s weekday or weekend/public holiday services and destinations, choosing a bus that leaves enough visiting time before temple last admission at 16:30. If checking in first, find your accommodation’s stop separately.

Walk from the stop to Kongobuji and visit. Usual hours are 08:30–17:00, with last admission at 16:30; check event-day arrangements separately. Afterwards, travel to your booked accommodation. If arriving late, visit Kongobuji first the next day and adjust your time at Danjo Garan.

Day 3: Danjo Garan, then down the mountain
Add this final visit only if there is enough time before your departure. Skip it for a morning departure.

Visit Konpon Daito if your return connections leave enough time. It is a separate facility and admission from Kongobuji, usually open 08:30–17:00 with last admission at 16:30. Check event-day arrangements separately. The Kondo interior costs another JPY 500; add it only if wanted. If you missed Kongobuji yesterday, prioritize one place according to the time before your return.

- Danjo Garan and Kongobuji-mae → Bus to Koyasan-ekimae
After visiting, locate the Kongobuji-mae boarding point on the official mountain map and take a Koyasan-ekimae-bound bus. The official stop timetable lists station-bound routes 31, 41, 43, 52 and 53, with an adult fare of JPY 460. Use this boarding point after visiting around Kongobuji. If boarding at another stop near Danjo Garan or your accommodation, check that stop’s station-bound timetable separately. Weekday timetables distinguish school days and school holidays; weekends and public holidays have a separate timetable. Allow time between bus arrival and cable car departure, shortening your final visit for an early connection.

Take the Gokurakubashi-bound cable car from Koyasan Station. Check its departure in the weekday or weekend/public holiday timetable for your date. Allow time to reach the cable car platform after leaving the mountain bus.

For an early departure, skip the final temple visit and plan the descent first.

Ordinary adult admission is JPY 410 for Wakayama Castle keep, JPY 1,000 for Kongobuji and JPY 500 for Konpon Daito, totalling JPY 1,910. Adding the JPY 1,980 ordinary Hashimoto–Koyasan return gives JPY 3,890. The rail fare is JPY 990 each way, including the Koya Line train and cable car. Add JPY 500 for the Kondo interior if wanted.
Mountain buses cost extra. Koyasan-ekimae–Kongobuji-mae is JPY 460 each way for adults, or JPY 920 return. The adult Koyasan one-day bus pass costs JPY 1,500, so individual fares are JPY 580 cheaper for only this return trip. The pass is valid on its specified day and sections, excluding the express Tateri Line and Koya Ryujin Line. Stops and extra rides depend on your accommodation; add the bus fares you actually need. Travel from your departure city, JR trains, city buses, accommodation and meals are also separate.

Walk from Shirarahama stop to the beach and along the shore. This route does not depend on swimming. Afterwards, have dinner and stay overnight in Shirahama.
Day 2: visit Sandanbeki and return

Walk about five minutes from the stop, as listed by the tourism bureau, to the cliff viewpoint. For the optional cave visit, buy tickets in the building to the right of the viewpoint and take the elevator down. The facility’s estimate of about 30 minutes inside excludes ticketing and queues.

Check a returning route 11 service that stops at Shirarahama. Have lunch and rest near the beach, then spend a second night at the same accommodation. Adjust coastal visits for wind, waves or access restrictions.

Day 3 morning: bus centre to Rinkai
- Shirahama Bus Centre → Rinkai (Engetsu Island) stop
From Shirahama Bus Centre (S14), take Meiko circular route 102 to Rinkai (Engetsu Island) (S54). Check departures, arrivals and stops for your date. Some circular services do not stop at Shirarahama, so this route boards at the bus centre.
- Rinkai stop → View Engetsu Island from the coast
Get off at Rinkai and walk about five minutes, as listed by the tourism association, to the coast overlooking the island. This is a shore-based view, without landing on the island or taking a boat. A morning visit does not wait for sunset through the island’s opening. Follow access instructions and restrictions on site; shorten the visit if the walking route is blocked.

- Rinkai → Route 101 to Shirarahama
From Rinkai, take a Meiko route 101 service that stops at Shirarahama. Check the date’s timetable and the bus destination. Rinkai, the bus centre and Shirarahama are different stops.
- Shirarahama → JR Shirahama Station
From Shirarahama, take station-bound Meiko route 11 to JR Shirahama Station. Choose a bus that connects with your return JR train. Skip Engetsu Island for a morning departure. The official estimate of about 16 minutes from the station to Rinkai is not the total return time from the coast to the station.

The six listed Meiko bus rides total JPY 1,460 in individual adult fares: JPY 340 each way between the station and Shirarahama, JPY 240 each way between the beach and Sandanbeki, and JPY 150 each for bus centre–Rinkai and Rinkai–Shirarahama. Walking from your accommodation to the bus centre is assumed, so check the actual address and route. These fares come from the table revised April 8, 2021, linked by the official route page; recheck fares for your date.
Adding JPY 1,500 ordinary cave admission gives JPY 2,960. The digital three-day pass costs JPY 1,900, JPY 440 more than the six individual bus fares. With cave admission, it totals JPY 3,400 before discounts. Compare again if adding rides or facility discounts. JR travel, accommodation, meals and boats are excluded. If the official pass guidance’s JPY 100 cave discount applies, the total is JPY 3,300, JPY 340 more than individual bus fares and ordinary admission at JPY 2,960. Do I board the Engetsu Island bus at Shirarahama?
This route uses route 102 from Shirahama Bus Centre to Rinkai (Engetsu Island). Some route 102 services skip Shirarahama, so check boarding at the bus centre in the stop table for your date. Also check the route from your accommodation to the bus centre using its actual address.
