Five days in Wakayama: move along the coast or stay in the city and mountains?

Combine the beach, cliffs and falls with two Shirahama nights, then JR travel to Kii-Katsuura for two nights. For castle and temples, compare two nights each in Wakayama city and Koyasan. That route assumes a late first-day arrival, leaving the castle for day two, temples for day four and descent for the final day. If you can sightsee on arrival, also compare the three-day route with one night each in the city and Koyasan.

From Shirahama to Kii-Katsuura

Allow time for arrival, reaching your accommodation, meals and rest today. Shorten visits to fit your booked transport.

  1. JR Shirahama Station → Shirarahama stop

From JR Shirahama Station (S0), take Sandanbeki-bound Meiko route 12 to Shirarahama (S15). Check JR travel from your departure city together with the bus connection for your date.

  2. Sandanbeki stop → Cliffs and optional cave visit

Walk about five minutes from the stop to the cliff viewpoint, following the tourism bureau’s guidance. For the optional cave, buy tickets in the building to the right of the viewpoint and take the elevator down. Add ticketing and elevator queues to the facility’s estimate of about 30 minutes inside. Usual hours are 08:00–17:00, with last admission at 16:50; check temporary closure and coastal restrictions for your date.

  1. Shirarahama stop → JR Shirahama Station

From Shirarahama (S15), take Tanabe Station-bound Meiko route 11 via JR Shirahama Station to JR Shirahama Station (S0). Choose a bus arriving before your Kii-Katsuura-bound JR departure, allowing time to check tickets and seats and move through the station.

  2. JR Shirahama Station → Kuroshio to Kii-Katsuura

From JR Shirahama Station, take a Shingu-bound limited express Kuroshio to Kii-Katsuura. Check the train time and reserved seat for your date, choosing a departure that leaves preparation time after your station-bound bus arrives. Allow movement and waits between bus and JR; if the connection is tight, choose both services again together. Prioritize the JR connection and your next accommodation’s check-in time over beach visits today. On arrival in Kii-Katsuura, follow your booked accommodation’s directions and spend the first night there. Before booking, check whether it is near the station or requires a separate shuttle or boat.

Day 4: return trip to Nachi Falls

The basic return trip views the falls from the ordinary worship area. Add the paid viewing platform only if you can confirm admission on the day.

  1. Kii-Katsuura Station → Nachi-no-Taki-mae

Prepare a Nachi Area World Heritage Free Ticket valid for the visit day, costing JPY 1,260 for adults, and take Nachisan-bound route 31 from the station. The paper-ticket counter outside the station opens 08:00–10:30 and 11:30–17:00, closing 10:30–11:30. Digital tickets are sold in the 乗換案内 app. Choose a service stopping outside the falls. 2. Nachi-no-Taki-mae → Hiro Shrine worship area and falls view

From the stop, follow Hiro Shrine’s torii gate and stone steps to the ordinary worship area. Nachikatsuura’s tourism organization lists ordinary worship as free, 07:00–16:30. Check steps and access restrictions, leaving time before your return bus. The paid Otaki viewing platform is optional. The shrine operator lists an adult fee of JPY 500; the roughly three-minute one-way walk from reception to the platform is not the full walk from the bus stop. If you cannot confirm the paid platform’s admission hours on the day, use the ordinary worship area and return. The longer Daimonzaka walk is excluded from the basic itinerary.

  3. Nachi-no-Taki-mae → Return to Kii-Katsuura Station and the same accommodation

Take station-bound route 32 back to Kii-Katsuura Station. Choose a bus around the end of your visit and any connections beyond the station. After ordinary worship, you can return earlier according to lunch and rest plans and the actual bus services. The Nachi ticket is a same-day ticket for departure from and return to Kii-Katsuura, with unlimited travel in the Nachi Station–Nachisan section. Day 5: market breakfast, then departure

  1. Kii-Katsuura accommodation → Nigiwai Market and meal

Choose breakfast or shopping at Katsuura Fishing Port Nigiwai Market. Usual hours are 08:00–16:00, closed Tuesdays, with some exceptions. Check opening for your date and your train departure first; skip the market if time is short. This itinerary does not book auction tours or events.

  2. Market and Kii-Katsuura Station → Kii-Katsuura Station and booked departure

Take your booked Osaka-bound Kuroshio from Kii-Katsuura Station. Skip the market for a morning train or market closure. This is not a direct service to Kansai Airport; for a same-day flight, check airport transfers and check-in after reaching Osaka.

Official JR timetable and fare search: enter your travel date

Subtotal for confirmed items: JPY 2,420: buses in both areas only

Included: JPY 1,160 for four individual Shirahama bus rides, plus JPY 1,260 for a Nachi same-day bus ticket; ordinary Nachi worship is free

Extra costs and conditions: All JR travel, accommodation, meals, accommodation access and airport transfers cost extra. Optional cave admission of JPY 1,500 and paid viewing platform admission of JPY 500 are excluded.

JPY 2,420 adds four individual bus rides—JPY 340 each way between the station and Shirarahama and JPY 240 each way between the beach and Sandanbeki, totalling JPY 1,160—to a JPY 1,260 adult same-day ticket for Nachi. The basic route uses free ordinary worship at Nachi and the free Sandanbeki cliff viewpoint. Add JPY 1,500 for the cave for a total of JPY 3,920, JPY 500 for only the Nachi platform for JPY 2,920, or both for JPY 4,420. Confirm platform admission on the day first. JR journeys from your departure city to Shirahama, Shirahama to Kii-Katsuura and Kii-Katsuura to Osaka, plus all accommodation, meals, accommodation access and airport transfers, are excluded. Look up JR fares and reserved seats separately for each travel date; this is not a full trip budget. Individual fares to the falls stop have not been confirmed, so a price comparison between ordinary tickets and the day ticket is unavailable.

5 days, 4 nights B

Two nights in Wakayama city, two in Koyasan

Choose this route for a late first-day arrival in Wakayama city, separating castle and temple visits from travel days. Stay two nights in the city, then two in Koyasan. Visit Kongobuji and Danjo Garan on day four and use the final day for the descent. If you have ample sightseeing time on arrival day, also compare the three-day route with one night each in Wakayama city and Koyasan.

Day 1: city accommodation in Wakayama

This schedule assumes a late first-day arrival, with time to reach your accommodation, eat and rest. Leave the castle visit for tomorrow.

  1. Arrival station: JR Wakayama or Nankai Wakayamashi → Your booked city accommodation entrance

Look up trains from your departure city to JR Wakayama Station for the actual date. Use your accommodation’s official directions and the JR station map to reach the hotel entrance from the correct exit. Check the exit and walking time against the accommodation address. If choosing a service arriving at Nankai Wakayamashi Station, plan the route from that separate station instead. Confirm the arrival station in your accommodation’s access guide first.

Subtotal for confirmed items: JPY 3,890: admission, train and cable car only

Included: Admission to Wakayama Castle keep, Kongobuji and Konpon Daito, plus ordinary Hashimoto–Koyasan return by Koya Line train and cable car

Extra costs and conditions: Required mountain buses are excluded. The reference Koyasan-ekimae–Kongobuji-mae section costs JPY 460 each way for adults, or JPY 920 return; extra rides depend on your accommodation. Mountain buses, departure city–Hashimoto travel, JR trains, city buses, limited express supplements, accommodation, meals and luggage storage are excluded.

Ordinary adult admission is JPY 410 for Wakayama Castle keep, JPY 1,000 for Kongobuji and JPY 500 for Konpon Daito, totalling JPY 1,910. Adding the JPY 1,980 ordinary Hashimoto–Koyasan return gives JPY 3,890. The rail fare is JPY 990 each way, including the Koya Line train and cable car. Add JPY 500 for the Kondo interior if wanted.

Mountain buses cost extra. Koyasan-ekimae–Kongobuji-mae is JPY 460 each way for adults, or JPY 920 return. The adult Koyasan one-day bus pass costs JPY 1,500, so individual fares are JPY 580 cheaper for only this return trip. The pass is valid on its specified day and sections, excluding the express Tateri Line and Koya Ryujin Line. Stops and extra rides depend on your accommodation; add the bus fares you actually need. Travel from your departure city, JR trains, city buses, accommodation and meals are also separate. Choose coastal JR passes and trains for your dates

Choose trains between Shirahama and Kii-Katsuura using your travel date and direction. Compare ordinary JR tickets with pass coverage, matching local buses to the station and accommodation check-in as well.

Compare Kansai WIDE for coastal JR journeys first

The adult Kansai WIDE pass costs JPY 12,000 for five consecutive days on JR sections shown on the official map. Shirahama, Kii-Katsuura and Shingu are included, along with ordinary-car reserved seats on Kuroshio. All Kuroshio seats are reserved, so reserve before boarding. A foreign passport and Japan’s Temporary Visitor entry status are required.

Prepare separate tickets for the Nankai Koya Line, cable car and mountain buses to Koyasan, Meiko buses in Shirahama and local Nachi buses. Temple, cave and platform admission, accommodation and meals are excluded from the pass price.

For five-day route A, look up JR fares for each date: departure city–Shirahama on day one, Shirahama–Kii-Katsuura, and Kii-Katsuura–final destination on the last day. Compare the ordinary-ticket total for covered sections used within five consecutive days with JPY 12,000. The route’s JPY 2,420 partial total counts only Meiko buses and the Nachi day ticket, which the JR pass does not replace.
