Four days in Wakayama: mountain stays or extra time for the falls?

Visit Koyasan temples on separate days and add Wakayama Castle by staying two nights in Koyasan, then your final night in Wakayama city. For a late arrival in Kii-Katsuura and a weather backup day for Nachi Falls, compare three nights in the same accommodation. If arrival leaves sightseeing time and you do not need a backup day, also consider a shorter stay.

Two nights in Koyasan, then Wakayama Castle on your final day

Choose this route for more time at Koyasan’s temples and a final-day visit to Wakayama Castle. Stay two nights in Koyasan, visiting Kongobuji and Danjo Garan on separate days, then move down to Wakayama city on day three for one night.

Day 1: travel up to Koyasan and visit Kongobuji

Take a mountain bus from Koyasan Station to Kongobuji, then stay overnight in Koyasan. Match your departure to temple hours and the bus and cable car connections for your date. Check your booked accommodation’s directions and meal times.

  1. Nankai Hashimoto → Gokurakubashi

From Nankai Hashimoto, take a local Koya Line train towards Gokurakubashi. Check the weekday or weekend/public holiday timetable for your date, together with the connecting cable car at Gokurakubashi. Travel from your departure city to Hashimoto is separate. Distinguish ordinary tickets from reserved-seat and limited express supplements.

  2. Gokurakubashi → Cable car to Koyasan Station

Leave the train and change to the Koyasan-bound cable car. Choose a cable car that allows transfer time after your train arrives, using the weekday or weekend/public holiday timetable for your date. From Koyasan Station, a mountain bus is still needed to reach your temple or accommodation.

  3. Outside Koyasan Station → Kongobuji-mae stop

From Koyasan-ekimae, take a mountain bus via Kongobuji-mae and get off there. The official fare tables list JPY 460 for adults on this section of routes 21, 31, 41, 42, 43, 52, 53 and 55. Route 44 via Daimon Minami Parking follows a different stop order. Check the station timetable’s weekday or weekend/public holiday services and destinations, choosing a bus that leaves enough visiting time before temple last admission at 16:30. Its admission is separate from Kongobuji; usual hours are 08:30–17:00, with last admission at 16:30. Add the Kondo interior for JPY 500 only if wanted. Have lunch in Koyasan afterwards.

Day 3: change to JR at Hashimoto for Wakayama city

Finish temple visits the previous day. Today, collect your luggage and travel down the mountain. Allow time for meals and rest after moving to accommodation in Wakayama city.

  1. Koyasan accommodation and station-bound stop → Bus to Koyasan-ekimae

Collect your luggage, then use the official mountain map and accommodation directions to locate a Koyasan-ekimae-bound stop. From Kongobuji-mae, station-bound routes are 31, 41, 43, 52 and 53, costing JPY 460 for adults. For another stop, check its station-bound timetable and fare. Distinguish school days and school holidays in the weekday timetable from the weekend/public holiday timetable. Leave time after bus arrival for the cable car and match connections with JR beyond Hashimoto.

Subtotal for confirmed items: JPY 3,890: admission, train and cable car only

Included: Admission to Wakayama Castle keep, Kongobuji and Konpon Daito, plus ordinary Hashimoto–Koyasan return by Koya Line train and cable car

Extra costs and conditions: Required mountain buses are excluded. The reference Koyasan-ekimae–Kongobuji-mae section costs JPY 460 each way for adults, or JPY 920 return; extra rides depend on your accommodation. Mountain buses, departure city–Hashimoto travel, JR trains, city buses, limited express supplements, accommodation, meals and luggage storage are excluded.

Ordinary adult admission is JPY 410 for Wakayama Castle keep, JPY 1,000 for Kongobuji and JPY 500 for Konpon Daito, totalling JPY 1,910. Adding the JPY 1,980 ordinary Hashimoto–Koyasan return gives JPY 3,890. The rail fare is JPY 990 each way, including the Koya Line train and cable car. Add JPY 500 for the Kondo interior if wanted.

Mountain buses cost extra. Koyasan-ekimae–Kongobuji-mae is JPY 460 each way for adults, or JPY 920 return. The adult Koyasan one-day bus pass costs JPY 1,500, so individual fares are JPY 580 cheaper for only this return trip. The pass is valid on its specified day and sections, excluding the express Tateri Line and Koya Ryujin Line. Stops and extra rides depend on your accommodation; add the bus fares you actually need. Travel from your departure city, JR trains, city buses, accommodation and meals are also separate. Two nights in Koyasan span three days of arrival, visits and descent, so one two-day World Heritage Ticket cannot cover them all.

Stay in Kii-Katsuura for Nachi Falls

Choose this route for a late first-day arrival in Kii-Katsuura, with room to move the falls visit by a day if weather requires. Stay three nights in the same accommodation, allowing separate arrival, falls and backup or rest days. If your arrival day leaves ample visiting time and you do not need a backup day, compare a shorter stay.

Day 1: arrive at the station and check in

This schedule assumes a late first-day arrival. Travel to your accommodation, eat and rest, then visit the falls tomorrow. It does not assume a full sightseeing day on arrival.

  1. JR Kii-Katsuura Station → Your booked accommodation entrance

Look up trains from your departure city to JR Kii-Katsuura Station for your date. After arrival, follow your accommodation’s actual access instructions. Do not continue onto the Nachisan bus today; spend the night in Kii-Katsuura.

Day 2: Nachi Falls

The basic return trip views the falls from the ordinary worship area. Add the paid viewing platform only if you can confirm admission on the day.

  1. Kii-Katsuura Station → Nachi-no-Taki-mae

Prepare a Nachi Area World Heritage Free Ticket valid for the visit day, costing JPY 1,260 for adults, and take Nachisan-bound route 31 from the station. The paper-ticket counter outside the station opens 08:00–10:30 and 11:30–17:00, closing 10:30–11:30. Digital tickets are sold in the 乗換案内 app. Choose a service stopping outside the falls. Check operating and suspension notices together with returning route 32 for your date.

  2. Nachi-no-Taki-mae → Hiro Shrine worship area and falls view

From the stop, follow Hiro Shrine’s torii gate and stone steps to the ordinary worship area. Nachikatsuura’s tourism organization lists ordinary worship as free, 07:00–16:30. Check steps and access restrictions, leaving time before your return bus. The paid Otaki viewing platform is optional. The shrine operator lists an adult fee of JPY 500; the roughly three-minute one-way walk from reception to the platform is not the full walk from the bus stop. If you cannot confirm the paid platform’s admission hours on the day, use the ordinary worship area and return. The longer Daimonzaka walk is excluded from the basic itinerary.

  3. Nachi-no-Taki-mae → Return to Kii-Katsuura Station and the same accommodation

Take station-bound route 32 back to Kii-Katsuura Station. Choose a bus around the end of your visit and any connections beyond the station. After ordinary worship, you can return earlier according to lunch and rest plans and the actual bus services. The Nachi ticket is a same-day ticket for departure from and return to Kii-Katsuura, with unlimited travel in the Nachi Station–Nachisan section. Return to the same accommodation, have dinner and spend your second night there.

Day 3: backup falls day, or market and rest in good weather

If you could not visit the falls yesterday, check weather, access restrictions and bus operations, then move day two’s visit to today. Confirm that buses and facility admission have resumed before visiting. If you saw the falls yesterday and the weather is good, choose a market meal, shopping and rest instead. This day is for either the falls or market and rest. If the market is closed or going out is difficult, skip the outing, rest at your accommodation and eat at an open restaurant near the station.

  1. Kii-Katsuura accommodation → Chosen destination: Nachi-no-Taki-mae or Nigiwai Market

If you missed the falls yesterday, move day two’s return trip to today and prepare a Nachi ticket valid for the actual visit date. This does not plan visits on both days. For the market option, follow your accommodation address and the market’s official access guide to the entrance. Check routes and times from your accommodation to the station and market.

For the market, refer to usual hours of 08:00–16:00 and last food orders at 15:30, but check Tuesday and temporary closures first. Meals, shopping and activities are excluded from the partial total.

  1. Kii-Katsuura accommodation → Nigiwai Market and meal

If you visited the market yesterday, prepare to leave at your accommodation and go straight to the station. Otherwise, choose breakfast or shopping at Katsuura Fishing Port Nigiwai Market only if there is enough time before departure. Plan meals around accommodation and departure times

If dinner is booked at your Koyasan accommodation, time temple visits and the return bus around the meal start. In Shirahama, choose a meal location between your beach accommodation and actual bus stop. In Kii-Katsuura, plan access first according to whether your accommodation is near the station or needs a boat or shuttle. Follow the booked property’s meal and transfer conditions.

Nigiwai Market offers meals and shopping. Usual hours are 08:00–16:00, with last food orders at 15:30, Tuesday closure and opening exceptions. Leave time to return to the station on departure day. Can I catch a flight straight after an afternoon arrival in Osaka from Kii-Katsuura?

Check Kuroshio services and seats from Kii-Katsuura to Osaka for your date first. Airport transfers and check-in remain after arrival at Osaka Station. Skip the market and go to the station first for a morning train or if time is short. Without a flight time, a same-day connection cannot be confirmed.
