Kansai WIDE Excursion Pass: 3-day coverage and eligibility
Japan rail pass guide
The Kansai WIDE Excursion Pass costs JPY 12,000 for an adult or JPY 6,000 for a child and covers specified routes across Kansai, Okayama and Tottori for three consecutive days. Non-Japanese passport holders, including eligible foreign residents of Japan, may use it. This agency-only product is different from the five-day Kansai WIDE Area Pass.
Key stations
Shin-Osaka · 新大阪, Okayama · 岡山, Tottori · 鳥取, Takamatsu · 高松, Wakayama · 和歌山 and Kishi · 貴志 are key stations on the map.
When does this pass suit your itinerary?
Compare it with individual fares for a short trip from Kansai to Okayama or Tottori, whether you are visiting Japan or live there with an eligible non-Japanese passport. For Shinkansen travel to Hiroshima · 広島 or journeys lasting four days or more, compare other passes’ dates and coverage.
Who can use it?
You need a passport issued by a government other than Japan. Both Temporary Visitors and foreign residents of Japan are eligible. Bring every traveller’s passport when collecting passes. Do not buy multiple overlapping passes for the same period.
Prices and child fares
The three-day pass costs JPY 12,000 adult or JPY 6,000 child. Current Japanese terms define children as aged 6–11 on the payment date and adults as 12 or over. Check the agency’s actual selling price and order conditions separately.
Travelling with young children
Each adult or child pass holder may bring up to two children aged 1–5 free. A child pass is needed for the third or any additional child, for a child occupying a separate reserved seat, or for a child travelling alone. Infants under one year travel free.
Three consecutive calendar days
Validity runs from 00:00 on the start date to 24:00 on the third day, Japan time. If you remain on a train across midnight at the end of validity, basic-fare coverage continues until you exit the gate and train-charge coverage until you get off that same train.
Exchange your agency E-MCO at a designated counter
The E-MCO supplied by the agency is an exchange order. Exchange it at a designated counter for the actual pass before travel. It differs from WEST QR, whose boarding QR is used at the gate.
Covered routes
The pass covers the San’yō Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Okayama, and the eligible limited-express, local, rapid and special rapid trains shown on its map. It also covers specified sections of Chizu Express from Kamigōri to Chizu, Kyoto Tango Railway and Wakayama Electric Railway. In Shikoku, only the route leading to Takamatsu is included; the whole island is not covered.
Using covered buses
Eligible local West Japan JR Bus routes within the map are included. Take one numbered boarding ticket per person. When getting off, show the pass and put only the numbered ticket in the fare box; keep your pass.
Where to exchange
Exchange the E-MCO within three months of issue and no later than the day of use at a designated counter. The location table lists Kyoto Station’s foreign-traveller counter, Travel Service Center Shin-Osaka and TiS Kyoto, Shin-Osaka, Osaka and Sannomiya · 三ノ宮. Do not use ordinary machines or station counters not designated for this exchange.
Reserved seats
Reserve after collecting the actual pass. The official Excursion Pass instructions direct you to an exchange location or a JR-WEST ticket office in the valid area for reserved seats; do not assume a ticket machine can process this agency-only pass. Reserve before boarding a reserved-seat-only train.
Agency-only sales and reservation timing
This pass is sold through agencies and is not a direct JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION product. Seats cannot be reserved before exchange. Collect the actual pass, then book at an exchange location or a JR-WEST ticket office in the valid area.
Excluded routes and extra charges
The only included Shinkansen section is Shin-Osaka–Okayama on the Sanyo Shinkansen. The Tokaido, Hokuriku and Kyushu Shinkansen and Sunrise Seto/Izumo are excluded. S Work cars require separate payment of both basic fare and train charges; Green Car and A-Seat also require additional charges.
Cancellations and refunds
Ask the original agency about an unexchanged E-MCO within one year of issue. Fees depend on the agency and product. For an exchanged, unused pass, apply before its start date or during its validity period at the agency counter where you exchanged it. The fee is 10% of the selling price with a minimum of JPY 220. No refund is given after use starts or for cancellations and delays.
From purchase to boarding
Check your non-Japanese passport and three-consecutive-day itinerary. Distinguish this pass’s duration and eligibility from the standard five-day Kansai Wide pass.
Choose the Excursion three-day adult or child option at the selling agency. Its E-MCO is not yet a boarding pass.
Bring the order and every traveller’s passport to a designated E-MCO exchange counter. At Kyoto Station, use the foreign-traveller counter.
Choose your start date when collecting the actual pass. The start date and duration cannot be changed after exchange.
Reserve seats at an exchange location or a JR-WEST ticket office before boarding. If a reserved-seat-only train is full, check seats on a later service.
On JR Shikoku sections such as Takamatsu, show the actual pass at a staffed gate; automatic gates cannot be used.
On buses, take a numbered boarding ticket, then show the pass and put only the numbered ticket in the fare box when getting off.
If cancelling, contact the purchasing or exchange agency before use starts. Lost passes cannot be reissued.
Frequently asked questions
Can foreign residents of Japan use it?
Yes. Holders of a non-Japanese passport are eligible regardless of residence status, including visitors and foreign residents of Japan.
How is it different from the standard Kansai Wide pass?
The Excursion Pass is valid for three consecutive days and can also be used by eligible foreign residents of Japan. It is a separate product from the regular five-day Kansai WIDE PASS, so compare the exact product name, validity and eligibility before choosing.
Can I exchange at a Kansai Airport machine?
This product’s E-MCO needs a designated counter. The location table marks Kansai Airport JTB for domestic sales only, not E-MCO exchange.
Can I take the Shinkansen to Hiroshima or Kanazawa?
No. Its Shinkansen coverage is Shin-Osaka–Okayama. Sanyo Shinkansen sections west of Okayama and the Hokuriku Shinkansen are excluded.
Can I use automatic gates at Takamatsu?
No. Show the actual pass at a staffed gate on JR Shikoku sections.
Can a JR station refund my exchanged pass?
Current Japanese refund rules direct unused E-MCO-exchanged passes to the agency counter where they were exchanged. Apply before the start date or within validity; no refund is available after use starts.
