Two days in Okinawa: what should you see in Naha?

Choose Shurijo for Ryukyu castle grounds, or museum/Fukushuen for Okinawa’s nature and history exhibits and gardens. The castle route needs post-visit airport time on day 2; the museum route needs viewing time after the day-1 hotel stop.

A: start at the market, then visit Shurijo

Eat at the market and browse Kokusai Street shops on day 1, then walk Shurijo Castle Park the next day. This short route combines meals, shopping and Ryukyu history using Yui Rail and walking. Your departure flight must allow castle sightseeing, hotel luggage collection and airport check-in.

Day 1: Naha Airport → Kencho-mae accommodation → Kokusai Street/market → accommodation

Enjoy a market meal and Kokusai Street, then Shurijo Castle Park the next day. You must be able to start exploring Naha on arrival afternoon; market dinner needs to fit each business’s last orders. Choose a return flight allowing castle sightseeing and airport travel.

  1. Naha Airport Station → Kencho-mae accommodation

After immigration and baggage collection, use the terminal’s second-floor connecting walkway to Naha Airport Station. Take Yui Rail towards Tedako-Uranishi and get off at Kencho-mae. Adult fare is ¥290; riding takes roughly 13 minutes. Walk from the station to your accommodation.

  2. Kencho-mae accommodation → Kokusai Street, market and dinner

Walk from your hotel towards Kencho-mae Station, then browse shops from Kokusai Street’s southern entrance towards First Makishi Public Market. The market building is at 2-10-1 Matsuo, Naha. Before choosing first-floor ingredients for cooking, check ingredient and preparation charges, or order from a second-floor restaurant menu. Listed second-floor last orders are 20:00; individual businesses’ hours differ.

  3. Kokusai Street and market → Kencho-mae accommodation

After eating, walk along Kokusai Street back to your Kencho-mae accommodation. If arrival conflicts with market closures or last orders, choose an open Kokusai Street restaurant. Meals and purchases are excluded from the subtotal below.

Day 2: accommodation → Shurijo Castle Park → hotel luggage collection → airport

Visit Shurijo Castle Park for Ryukyu castle grounds before departure. Seeing inside the Seiden requires more time than a short walk. Skip the castle if you cannot allow hotel return and airport travel before airline deadlines.

  1. Kencho-mae accommodation and station → Shuri Station south exit and Shureimon

Walk from your hotel to Kencho-mae Station. Board a Tedako-Uranishi-direction train reaching Shuri and get off there: adult ¥320, 14 minutes. Leave through the south exit, descend by stairs or elevator and follow the official walking directions towards Shureimon. General guidance gives roughly 15 minutes for this route; Seiden reservation guidance separately allows roughly 20 minutes from Shuri Station to the park information centre, Suimuikan · 首里杜館.

  2. Shureimon → Castle grounds and Hoshinmon paid area

Explore Shureimon and the castle grounds, then enter the paid area. For advance tickets from 23 November onward, show your QR code at Hoshinmon · 奉神門. If you reserved the Seiden interior, join its viewing queue during your slot. The operator recommends booking 40–50 minutes after arriving at Shuri Station. Official guidance including the interior allows roughly 90–120 minutes from Suimuikan through the visit and back; do not treat it as a brief pre-flight walk.

  3. Shurijo Castle Park and Shuri Station → Collect hotel luggage at Kencho-mae; Naha Airport

Walk back to Shuri Station after visiting. Take an airport-bound train to Kencho-mae, walk to your hotel, collect luggage and return to the station. An airport-bound train costs ¥290 and takes 13 minutes; use the second-floor connecting walkway from the airport station. Shuri rail return fare is ¥640. Allow the post-visit walk, train waits, hotel walks, luggage collection and airport check-in separately.

Adult Shurijo paid-area admission is ¥400 through 21 November 2026 and ¥1,000 from 23 November. All park areas close on 22 November, so this castle route is unavailable. On 23 November, plan an afternoon visit: free castle areas open at 11:15; paid areas and Seiden interior open at noon. Unreserved tickets exclude the Seiden interior. Check official booking availability for your date and time. Do not add day-2 castle sightseeing for morning flights or departures leaving insufficient check-in time.

Per adult, airport rail return ¥580 + Shuri rail return ¥640 + paid-area admission gives ¥1,620 through 21 November or ¥2,220 from 23 November. Flights, accommodation, meals and separate luggage-storage fees are excluded. Allow walking time separately.

Reduce outdoor visits if strong wind and rain make castle or garden walking difficult. To switch to the museum, first check its opening, last entry and Yui Rail operation. Do not assume indoor facilities operate normally when typhoons stop transport. Skipping or changing attractions also changes admission and travel sections.

Checked admission/transport subtotal: Per adult: ¥1,620 for Shurijo visits through 21 November 2026 / ¥2,220 from 23 November

Included: Shurijo paid area ¥400 or ¥1,000 + airport–Kencho-mae Yui Rail return ¥580 + Kencho-mae–Shuri Yui Rail return ¥640

Extra: Flights, accommodation, meals, shopping and separate luggage storage

All Shurijo Castle Park areas close on 22 November. On 23 November, free areas open at 11:15 and paid areas at noon. Seiden interior requires a ticket including a reservation. Reducing or skipping castle visits in wind/rain changes costs. On departure day, reserve time for hotel luggage collection and airport check-in first.

B: a short museum and garden visit

Choose the museum/Fukushuen route for Okinawa’s nature/history exhibits and a relaxed garden walk. Use Yui Rail and walking without a long northern journey. You need museum visiting time after the arrival-day hotel stop, and a date when the garden opens the next day.

Day 1: Naha Airport → Kencho-mae accommodation → museum → Kencho-mae accommodation

See Okinawa’s nature and history exhibits on arrival day. Visiting via your Kencho-mae hotel means enough sightseeing time must remain after immigration, rail and walking. You can see both exhibits and garden if Fukushuen opens the following day.

  1. Naha Airport Station → Leave luggage at Kencho-mae accommodation

After immigration and baggage collection, use the second-floor walkway to the airport station. Take a Tedako-Uranishi-bound train to Kencho-mae: adult ¥290, 13 minutes. Stop at your accommodation, then return to the station for the museum.

  2. Kencho-mae Station → Omoromachi Station, museum main entrance and permanent collection

From Kencho-mae, take a Tedako-Uranishi-direction train reaching Omoromachi: ¥250, six minutes. Walk roughly 10 minutes, or 15 at a slower pace, to the museum at 3-1-1 Omoromachi, Naha. Follow official access guidance to the main entrance; the side entrance and rear gate are currently closed. Adult museum permanent-collection admission is ¥530. Last entry is 17:30 Tuesday–Thursday/Sunday and 19:30 Friday/Saturday. Allow enough viewing time even if arriving before last entry.

  3. Museum and Omoromachi Station → Kencho-mae Station, dinner and accommodation

After visiting, walk from the main entrance back to Omoromachi Station. Take an airport-bound train to Kencho-mae: ¥250, six minutes. Eat at an open restaurant near southern Kokusai Street and walk back to your hotel. Checked rail costs that day: airport–Kencho-mae ¥290 + museum return ¥500 = ¥790.

Check museum opening days and last entry even when choosing exhibits because of rain. Do not plan travel to indoor attractions when a typhoon stops transport. If next-day wind/rain makes garden walking difficult, shorten the visit, collect hotel luggage and go to the airport. Skipping the garden changes route B and its cost, which assume both facilities.

Day 2: accommodation → Fukushuen → hotel luggage collection → airport

After museum exhibits the previous day, finish with a Fukushuen garden walk and a city meal. For a morning flight, move the garden to the previous day or skip it and head to the airport.

  1. Kencho-mae accommodation → Fukushuen entrance

Walk from your Kencho-mae accommodation towards the station, then Fukushuen. The station-to-garden walk is seven minutes. Follow the official access map to 2-29-19 Kume, Naha. Daytime adult garden entry costs ¥200 from 09:00. Hotel-to-station walking is extra.

  2. Fukushuen and city restaurant → Meal and closure-day adjustments

Walk the garden, return towards Kencho-mae and eat at an open restaurant. On Wednesdays or substitute closure days, browse Kokusai Street shops/restaurants instead; the garden-inclusive route and cost will differ.

  3. Collect luggage at Kencho-mae accommodation → Kencho-mae Station to Naha Airport

Walk back to your hotel, collect luggage and return to Kencho-mae Station. Take an airport-bound train, ¥290/13 minutes, then the second-floor terminal walkway. Your flight must allow post-garden walking, luggage collection, train waits and airline check-in. Do not add final-day gardens for morning departures.

Yui Rail Naha Airport Station fares/timesYui Rail Kencho-mae fares/timesNaha Airport monorail access

Two-day rail costs total ¥1,080; museum/daytime garden admission totals ¥730, giving ¥1,810. These sections differ from travelling directly from the airport to the museum without a hotel stop. Meals, accommodation, flights and separately charged hotel luggage storage are excluded. Skipping the final-day garden subtracts ¥200 for ¥1,610, but differs from route B with both museum and garden.

Checked admission/transport subtotal: Per adult: ¥1,810

Included: Museum permanent collection ¥530 + daytime Fukushuen ¥200 + airport–Kencho-mae Yui Rail return ¥580 + Kencho-mae–Omoromachi Yui Rail return ¥500

Extra: Flights, accommodation, meals, shopping, separate luggage storage and special exhibition admission

This route leaves luggage at Kencho-mae accommodation first, then makes a museum return trip. Check museum opening/last entry and garden closures. Skipping the departure-day garden gives ¥1,610; night garden entry adds ¥100. Apply the same adjustment if wind/rain causes you to skip the garden.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit Shurijo on day 2 before a morning flight?

Skip day-2 Shurijo and head to the airport for morning departures. The visit requires a station-to-park walk, sightseeing, hotel return and luggage collection. Beyond Kencho-mae–airport’s 13-minute ride, allow hotel/station/terminal walking, waits and airline check-in. In particular, 22 November 2026 is closed and paid areas open at noon on the 23rd. Skipping sightseeing changes the subtotal.

Can I choose museum/garden if arriving late on day 1?

You need viewing time after your Kencho-mae hotel stop and walk from Omoromachi to the main entrance. Museum last entry: Tuesday–Thursday/Sunday 17:30; Friday/Saturday 19:30. Closed Mondays except public/substitute holidays and Okinawa Memorial Day, closing the next weekday instead. Late arrival may require skipping the museum, changing the two-attraction route/cost. Check next-day garden timing against your flight and Wednesday/substitute closures.
