Stay in Nagasaki City or continue to Sasebo?

Use Nagasaki City for Dejima, Glover Garden and Mount Inasa. For Kujukushima cruises, compare Sasebo accommodation and intercity travel separately.

Choose harbour sights, night views or a cruise first

Compare Dejima and Glover Garden’s historic buildings, Atomic Bomb Museum exhibits and Mount Inasa’s night views. Kujukushima cruises depart from Sasebo, in a different direction from city attractions. Check admission, hours and access for the five attractions before choosing an itinerary.

Itineraries by trip length

First decide between Nagasaki City’s harbour sights and exhibits, or travelling to Sasebo for a cruise. Compare two itineraries for each trip length, from a short city stay to nights split across both cities. These courses use Nagasaki Airport; shorten or omit final-day sightseeing to meet your airline’s check-in requirements.

2 days / 1 night

For one night in the city, compare Dejima and Glover Garden on separate days with the museum-and-Dejima itinerary. Shorten first-day visits after a late arrival and omit second-day sights for a morning flight.

3 days / 2 nights

Choose two nights in Nagasaki City with daytime sights and Mount Inasa’s evening views, or two nights in Sasebo with a cruise on day two. Neither itinerary moves between both cities.

4 days / 3 nights

Choose three nights in the city with sights on separate days, or one night in Nagasaki followed by two in Sasebo. The Sasebo course keeps the intercity move and cruise on separate days.

5 days / 4 nights

Compare four nights in Nagasaki City for unhurried daytime sights and night views, or two nights each in Nagasaki and Sasebo. The latter visits city harbour sights before moving to Sasebo and setting aside a day for the cruise.

Where would you like to spend a day?

Dejima, Shinchi and Glover Garden

Explore reconstructed trading posts and exhibits at Dejima for Edo-period trade, or Glover Garden for Western-style houses and harbour views. Eat at Shinchi between harbour-side sights. Admission is separate, and Glover access uses Ishibashi stop and Sky Road. If viewing time is tight, split them across days.

Atomic Bomb Museum and hypocentre park

Read museum exhibits indoors and see the monument and surviving cathedral wall outdoors at the hypocentre park. Where the connecting lift is suspended, follow the city’s diversion route. Hypocentre park and Peace Statue area are separate places.

Sasebo and Kujukushima

Take another bus from Sasebo Station to Pearl Sea Resort for a cruise among islands. Allow separate days staying in Sasebo, rather than adding a short visit from Nagasaki City, to leave time for the cruise and return buses.

Which stop should I start from?

Ascending to Glover Garden

From Nagasaki Station, travel to Shinchi Chinatown and change to an Ishibashi-bound tram. Use Sky Road’s inclined and vertical lifts from Ishibashi to Gate 2. Return through Gate 2 and the lifts to Ishibashi. Add tram waits and stone-path walking separately.

For the museum alone, alight at Atomic Bomb Museum stop and return the same way. To continue to the hypocentre park, follow the city map’s downhill diversion, then return towards the station from Peace Park tram stop. Check the outdoor connecting lift suspension and any restrictions on site.

Nagasaki Airport to Nagasaki City

Board the Nagasaki Station bus via Dejima Road at airport stand 5. Adult single fare is 1,400 yen; add bus waits and traffic delays to the roughly 43-minute ride. For the return, use airport stand 4 inside the prefectural bus terminal near the station, separate from the arrival transport plaza.

Continuing by JR to Fukuoka

Between Hakata and Nagasaki, change between Kamome and Relay Kamome at Takeo-Onsen. Compare the Northern Kyushu Pass’s covered sections and consecutive validity days with ordinary tickets. Nagasaki trams, Sasebo express buses, cruises and ropeway travel cost extra. For a flight from Fukuoka, allow airport travel after arriving at Hakata. Eligibility requires a non-Japanese passport, residence outside Japan and entry for tourism as a Temporary Visitor. Check the entry stamp or sticker and carry your passport while using the pass. If using automated immigration gates, ask airport staff for the stamp or sticker.

What to eat in Nagasaki

After Dejima, choose champon or sara udon in Shinchi Chinatown. On your cruise day, eat at Pearl Sea Resort or return to the Sasebo Station area for a Sasebo burger or lemon steak.

Champon and sara udon

Champon is a Nagasaki noodle dish with vegetables, seafood and meat cooked together in broth. Sara udon has ingredients in a thick sauce over noodles, with versions using thin crispy noodles or thicker noodles. Lunch or dinner in Shinchi Chinatown fits well after Dejima.

Turkish rice and kakuni manju

Turkish rice combines pilaf, spaghetti and pork cutlet on one plate, with ingredients and sauces varying by restaurant. Kakuni manju is braised pork in a soft bun. Check menus and opening hours before choosing a meal or snack between sights.

Sasebo burgers and lemon steak

Sasebo burgers vary in ingredients and sauces by restaurant. Lemon steak pairs thinly sliced beef with a lemon-flavoured sauce. Eat before or after the cruise at Pearl Sea Resort, or choose a restaurant after returning towards Sasebo Station.

Look near Nagasaki Station if arriving by airport bus or JR, or continuing to Sasebo. Use trams for Dejima and Glover Garden. The night-view bus boards at the transport plaza by the JR station’s east exit. Check which side of the station your hotel occupies before planning the first transfer.

What if weather or suspended services change the plan?

If the night-view bus cannot be reserved

Have dinner and rest after daytime sightseeing. Do not head to a free-bus boarding point without a reservation. Check the ropeway and loop bus’s operation for your date, then move the visit to a day when both can be used.

Fares, services and bus reservations

If the cruise is cancelled or sold out

The 2,200-yen cruise fare applies only if you board. Eat or rest at the resort and return to Sasebo. If choosing another paid attraction such as the aquarium, check its admission and operation separately.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit Nagasaki City and Sasebo from the same base?

Dejima, Glover Garden, Atomic Bomb Museum and Mount Inasa are grouped in the Nagasaki City course. Kujukushima cruises require a further bus from Sasebo Station to Pearl Sea Resort. Sasebo courses stay two nights locally; day trips from Nagasaki City need further cruise and return-transport connection checks.

Does a Shinchi tram transfer cost only 150 yen?

With cash, pay each tram’s fare. The second fare is waived only when meeting official conditions, including full payment for one person with an eligible IC card and boarding within 30 minutes of alighting. Mixed cash, insufficient balance and multiple people on one card do not qualify.
