What should I see on a short trip?

For historic harbour buildings and views, visit Dejima and Glover Garden on separate days. Choose the Atomic Bomb Museum and Dejima course if you also want exhibits on atomic bombing and peace. Reduce first-day visits after a late arrival and omit second-day sights for a morning flight.

Dejima and Glover Garden on separate days

Choose this for port trade history and historic Western-style houses. Stay one night near Nagasaki Station, visiting Dejima first and Glover Garden the next day. Final-day viewing requires an afternoon flight with ample airport time.

Day 1: leave bags at your hotel, then Dejima

Leave luggage at your hotel and explore Dejima’s exhibits. After a late arrival, shorten your visit to fit entrance hours.

  1. Nagasaki Airport arrivals, first floor → City-bound stand 5

After immigration and luggage collection, check stand 5 for services via Dejima Road to Nagasaki Station. Distinguish these from stand 4 services via Showamachi.

Airport first-floor check-in and arrivalsNagasaki Airport bus routes, stands and fares

  2. Airport stand 5 → Nagasaki Station transport plaza

Take the Dejima Road airport bus to Nagasaki Station’s transport plaza. Adults pay 1,400 yen one way for a roughly 43-minute ride, excluding waits and traffic delays. In the official timetable below, choose a service that leaves enough time after immigration. Departure travel boards at the prefectural bus terminal, a different location.

  3. Nagasaki Station tram stop → Dejima tram stop

After leaving bags at your booked hotel, return to the tram stop and take route 1 towards Sofukuji to Dejima. Adult cash fare is 150 yen per ride. The official service interval from 09:00–19:59 is about seven minutes, subject to traffic delays. Outside those hours, check the Nagasaki Station timetable for your direction.

  4. Dejima tram stop → Dejima entrance

Official access is about one minute’s walk from the stop. The Water Gate closes at 18:00 and the main entrance bridge operates until 21:00; after a late arrival, check which gate is open. The one-minute estimate does not cover every entrance.

Dejima admission, hours, access and airport bus fares

  5. Dejima entrance → Exhibits

Adult admission costs 1,100 yen. Allow 1½–2 hours, shortening the visit if arrival and travel run late. Dejima opens 08:00–21:00, with last admission at 20:40. You cannot re-enter after leaving.

  6. After Dejima → Dinner near Shinchi

After viewing, walk towards Shinchi for dinner. The official access guide gives about four minutes from Shinchi Chinatown stop to Dejima; allow separately for the walk from your actual exit to the restaurant and meal. You cannot re-enter, so do not plan to return inside after dinner.

From Nagasaki Station, take a Sofukuji-bound tram to Dejima. After a late arrival, check gate-specific hours and last admission and shorten viewing. Return towards the station after dinner and rest at the same hotel.

Day 2: Glover Garden → Nagasaki Airport

Visit Glover Garden only if you can return in time for an afternoon flight. With a morning flight or insufficient airport time, omit sightseeing and leave for the airport.

  1. Nagasaki Station tram stop → Shinchi Chinatown tram stop

Take route 1 towards Sofukuji to Shinchi Chinatown. Adult cash fare is 150 yen. Check the Sofukuji-bound Nagasaki Station timetable and distinguish services marked as suspended on school holidays.

  2. Shinchi Chinatown tram stop → Ishibashi tram stop

Change to Ishibashi-bound route 5 and alight at the terminus. Pay another 150 yen adult cash fare on this tram. The official service interval from 09:00–19:59 is about 11 minutes. Allow extra time for waits and delays. IC transfer discounts require boarding the second tram within 30 minutes of alighting at Shinchi and paying entirely with one card per person. Cash or covering insufficient IC balance with another payment method does not qualify.

  4. Sky Road boarding point → Glover Garden Gate 2

Take the free inclined lift, follow the connecting path and change to the vertical lift for upper Gate 2. The inclined lift ride takes just over two minutes; Sky Road operates 06:00–23:30. Add the connecting walk, vertical lift, walk to the gate and waits separately from the roughly three-minute stop-to-Sky-Road estimate.

  5. Glover Garden Gate 2 → Garden and buildings

Gate 2 does not accept cards; prepare another payment method. Adult admission costs 1,300 yen. Allow 1½–2 hours for the gardens and buildings, including breaks on slopes and stone paths. Basic hours are 08:00–18:00, with last admission 20 minutes before closing. Check your date in the official calendar below for extensions, private bookings and weather-related changes.

  6. After the garden → Gate 2 exit

To return towards Ishibashi, head back to Gate 2, marked as both an entrance and an exit on the official map. This differs from following the viewing route down to the lower exit. Add the uphill return walk separately from viewing and the three-minute stop estimate. Check on-site entrance restrictions.

  10. Accommodation near Nagasaki Station → Nagasaki Station prefectural bus terminal

Collect any stored luggage, then go to stand 4 inside Nagasaki Station’s prefectural bus terminal with your bags. This differs from the arrival transport plaza and roadside stop. Allow the hotel-to-terminal walk, luggage collection and boarding waits; check that day’s airport destination display. Hotel-to-stand time and cost depend on your booked address.

  11. Prefectural bus terminal → Nagasaki Airport

The Dejima Road airport bus costs 1,400 yen per adult one way. Boarding is in queue order, with no reservations; full buses cannot take more passengers. Choose a service in the official timetable that leaves ample time for flight check-in. For a morning flight or insufficient time, omit final-day sightseeing and leave early.

  12. Alight from the airport bus → Airline counters, first floor

Collect luggage loaded on the bus, then go to your airline’s first-floor check-in and baggage counter. Scheduled bus arrival does not mean airport procedures are complete. Check counter hours and baggage deadlines for your flight.

    Airport first-floor check-in and arrivals

  13. After first-floor check-in → Departures and boarding gate, second floor

Follow your flight’s domestic or international departure signs on the second floor for security and boarding gates. For international flights, allow exit procedures too and check the airline’s boarding deadline.

    Airport second-floor security and boarding

Enter Gate 2 from Ishibashi via Sky Road and return the same way. Lift waits and gate walks are excluded from the roughly three-minute stop-to-Sky-Road estimate. Allow a station-area hotel stop for bags before boarding the airport bus at prefectural terminal stand 4.

Subtotal of the items included below: 6,100 yen

Included items: The subtotal includes 2,400 yen for Dejima and Glover Garden, 900 yen for six cash tram rides and 2,800 yen for ordinary airport buses both ways.

Costs outside the subtotal: Accommodation, meals, flights, luggage storage, extra hotel-to-boarding-point transfers or taxis and optional facilities cost extra.

This subtotal is for one adult using ordinary cash fares. Free Sky Road has no ride charge; garden admission is included. IC discounts, passes or optional visits change costs. Meeting Shinchi transfer-discount conditions both ways makes six tram rides cost four fares, 600 yen, reducing the subtotal to 5,800 yen. If final viewing does not fit departure, subtract Glover’s 1,300 yen and that day’s four tram rides of 600 yen and head straight to the airport. Check actual airport services and extra travel costs separately.

  5. Museum entrance → Exhibits

Allow about 1½ hours for exhibits, shortening viewing after late immigration or hotel travel. General admission is 200 yen; high-school students and younger enter free with student ID or equivalent proof. Last admission is 17:00 September–April or 18:00 May–August. Omit the visit December 29–31. Check official links below for suspended exhibits before visiting; displays outside construction areas remain open and section schedules can change. Full museum-to-hypocentre access, meals and walks are excluded from 1½-hour viewing. Return on a station-bound tram from your chosen stop.

Day 2: Dejima → Nagasaki Airport

Add Dejima only if you can return for afternoon-flight procedures. Leave bags after checkout only after confirming storage, fees and collection hours with your hotel. If storage or airport timing does not work, omit sightseeing and leave for the airport.

  1. Nagasaki Station tram stop → Dejima tram stop

  3. Dejima entrance → Exhibits

Adult admission costs 1,100 yen. Allow 1½–2 hours, shortening the visit after a late hotel departure or if airport time is short. Dejima opens 08:00–21:00, with last admission at 20:40. You cannot re-enter after leaving.

Return from Dejima on Akasako-bound route 1, collect hotel luggage and reach airport stand 4 inside the prefectural bus terminal. This differs from the arrival plaza. Check whether lunch, tram waits and hotel travel still leave time for the airport bus and procedures.

Subtotal of the items included below: 4,700 yen

Included items: The subtotal includes 1,300 yen for the museum and Dejima, 600 yen for four cash tram rides and 2,800 yen for ordinary airport buses both ways.

Costs outside the subtotal: Accommodation, meals, flights, luggage storage, extra hotel-to-boarding-point transfers or taxis, extra paid facilities and audio guides cost extra.

This subtotal is for one adult using ordinary cash fares. It includes two tram rides on day one costing 300 yen and two Dejima tram rides on day two costing 300 yen. Returning from Peace Park after an optional hypocentre walk remains the single day-one return ride, without extra tram fares. Omitting Dejima’s 1,100-yen admission and that day’s 300-yen tram travel both ways gives 3,300 yen for the remaining included items. How much do I pay for a tram transfer at Shinchi?

Standard adult fare is 150 yen per ride. With cash, pay each tram separately. To waive the second fare at Shinchi, pay entirely for one person with an eligible transport IC card and board the second tram within 30 minutes of alighting, meeting all official conditions. Insufficient balance, mixed cash payment and paying for several people on one card do not qualify.
