Admission
General admission to the permanent exhibition is ¥400. High school and university students pay ¥300, and elementary and junior high school students pay ¥200. Planetarium admission is separate: general admission is ¥200, high school and university students pay ¥150, and junior high school students and younger pay ¥100. Special exhibitions also cost extra.
Opening hours
The museum opens 9:00 AM–5:00 PM, with last admission at 4:30 PM. The museum closes Mondays, or the following day when Monday is a public holiday, December 29–January 3, and during maintenance periods. Check the calendar for your visit date.

The first floor explores Kato Kiyomasa and Kumamoto's past. After visiting Kumamoto Castle, stop here to learn more about the area's history.
Geological Changes and Lake Ezu's Ecology
The second floor explores Kumamoto's geological changes and Lake Ezu's ecology through exhibits. After the history galleries, see the area's natural environment too.
How to get to Kumamoto City Museum · 熊本市立熊本博物館
Take tram Route B toward Kamikumamoto and get off at Sugidomo (杉塘). Walk about 5 minutes to the north entrance toward the former Hosokawa Gyobu Residence. From Sakuramachi Bus Terminal or Shiyakusho-mae, the walk is about 15 minutes. Route A from Kumamoto Station does not go to Sugidomo, so change to Route B in the city or choose a walking route. The address is 3-2 Furukyo-machi, Chuo-ku, Kumamoto City.

The planetarium costs extra beyond the permanent exhibition. Check screening times first, then visit the permanent exhibition before or after.
Check Closures for a Monday Visit
The museum closes Mondays, or the following day when Monday is a public holiday. The entrance is on the building's north side toward the former Hosokawa Gyobu Residence; walk in that direction after leaving the tram.

Can I take a tram directly from Kumamoto Station to the museum?
Route A from Kumamoto Station does not go to Sugidomo. Change in the city to Route B toward Kamikumamoto and get off at Sugidomo, or walk to the museum from the city. Enter on the north side of the building.
