Temples, gardens or art: Where should I spend my time?

Choose Nippon Maru for harbour views and the ship interior, or Sankeien for historic buildings and garden paths. Visit temples and the Great Buddha in Kamakura’s Hase area, or Enoshima for elevated sea views. For walks among sculptures, take the mountain train farther uphill from Yumoto to Hakone’s art museum. Sankeien Garden

三溪園

Explore historic buildings and walk through Sankeien’s Japanese garden. It is a bus journey from the harbour area rather than a short waterfront walk. Put the garden and harbour stroll on separate half-days to leave time to explore the grounds.

  • Admission¥900 for high-school students and older; ¥200 for elementary and junior-high students.
  • HoursHours are 9 a.m.–5 p.m., with last admission at 4:30 p.m. The garden closes December 26–31. Event hours may differ.
  • Getting thereAt bus bay 2 of Yokohama Station’s east-exit bus terminal, check municipal bus routes 8 and 168 for a service stopping at Sankeien Iriguchi (三溪園入口). Walk about 5 minutes after getting off. Follow on-site guidance if the boarding bay has temporarily changed.

Kotoku-in and the Great Buddha of Kamakura

Kotoku-in高徳院

See the Great Buddha of Kamakura up close at Kotoku-in. Visiting the grounds to view the statue and entering the statue cost separately. Combine Kotoku-in and Hasedera in the same half-day if you want to visit both.

  • AdmissionGeneral admission is ¥300, or ¥150 for ages 6–12. Entering the Great Buddha costs an additional ¥50.
  • HoursHours are 8 a.m.–5:30 p.m. April–September and 8 a.m.–5 p.m. October–March. Last admission to the grounds is 15 minutes before closing. The Great Buddha interior opens 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m., with last admission 10 minutes before closing. Reservations are not required for regular visits.
  • Getting thereFrom Kamakura Station, take a Fujisawa-bound Enoden train to Hase and walk about 7 minutes. The official guide gives a walk of about 5 minutes from Kotoku-in to Hasedera.

At Hasedera, visit the Kannon Hall, walk through the garden and enjoy sea views. There are stairs within the grounds, so leave time for a break if you are also visiting the Great Buddha.

Enoshima Sea Candle

Enoshima Sea Candle offers elevated views of the sea and surrounding mountains. Even after reaching the island, steps and sloping paths lead to the summit area. Allow for both tower admission and the walk across the island.

  • AdmissionTower admission is ¥800 for adults and ¥400 for elementary-school students. Samuel Cocking Garden is free during the day, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. On event days, leaving the garden after 5 p.m. incurs a separate garden fee of ¥500 for adults or ¥250 for children. All Escar sections cost ¥500 for adults. The adult daytime tower and Escar package costs ¥1,100 and is sold at the section 1 Escar boarding point. Use either the package or the separate ¥800 and ¥500 tickets in your budget, without counting both.
  • HoursThe official general hours are 9 a.m.–8 p.m., with last admission at 7:30 p.m. Hours vary by facility and event.
  • Getting thereThe official estimated journey is about 25 minutes from Enoden Enoshima Station or 20 minutes from Odakyu Katase-Enoshima Station. These estimates use the Escar route. Even with the Escar, you still need to walk down.
  • Enoshima Station to the island summitCross Enoshima Benten Bridge and enter Benzaiten Nakamise Street. To the left of the shrine’s red torii, take the three paid Escar sections uphill; Samuel Cocking Garden’s entrance is on the right. The tower is inside the garden. Allow separately for meals, queues, the tower visit and the walk down. This itinerary uses the daytime tower and Escar package and, on event days, leaves the garden before 5 p.m.

The Hakone Open-Air Museum

Walk through an outdoor sculpture garden against Hakone’s mountain scenery, then explore the indoor exhibits. Bring an umbrella or raincoat if you plan to explore outdoors on a rainy day.

  • Getting thereFrom Yumoto, take a Gora-bound mountain train to Chokoku-no-Mori and walk about 2 minutes. By bus, walk about 6 minutes from Ninotaira Iriguchi; this uses a different service.

Yumoto is a base for reaching Hakone’s hot-spring accommodation. A walk near the station is separate from bathing at an individual facility. Check prices and booking terms for each bath, restaurant and accommodation, including dinner and bathing deadlines.
